(OT) Years from now

sit on the lap of a parent and look up expectantly as Christmas approaches. "Tell me the story," they will say and mom and dad will know with out even asking.

The children want to hear the story of how Uncle tater saved the Bills season back in 2004.

"Well children," the parents will begin, "that season started on a very bleak note." You see, the Bills had started 0-4 that year and the fans were restless. People were calling for the benching of Bledsoe. Henry was the savior, then the goat. What about Evans someone named Rudy asked after week 3, "did TD blow the number 1 pick". Williams-slob, Teague-a decent back-up, Moulds-trade him now. Why our MVP after the first quarter of the year was the punter! The children would always gasp when they heard that. Even the youngest ones knew that things needed to be bleak indeed for the punter to be the MVP.

"Then a funny thing happened children," the parents would continue. The Bills started winning football games. The roller coasted ride had begun. Soon the team was 3-5 and approaching .500. But who did they beat some yelled. The fins, cards and Chadless jests and who were they? Was this team for real? Could they get to .500? Was there any possiblilty of the team making the playoffs after such a start?

Our hopes were dashed on November 14 in front of a national audience. The hated patsies dismantled our beloved Bills and the future never looked bleaker. Bledsoe must go many cried, this team cannot win with him as the QB. But rookie HC Mularkey stood fast. Drew is our QB he said and that is that. Many grumbled, many wailed and gnashed their teeth. Doesn't he know what he is doing they pleaded? Please, please give us JP. But JP was not seen except for mop-up duty.

What happened then the children would ask? The Bills were 3-6 and certainly going no where. "Or really" father would ask. "Do you know what happened next?" "Tell us, tell us" the children would SHOUT. "The Bills reeled off five straight wins after that fateful November night, and they scored more than 30 points in each, that's what they did!"

"So, the playoffs?" the children would ask? "Oh no" said father and mother "the playoffs were still not certain." You see our team had dug themselves a tremendous hole with their start. "What happend then!" the children would SHOUT. "How did the season end?"

"Well children" (finally to the best part), "if you promise to be really really good we'll tell you." The children would shout their promises, and mom and dad would finally give in (and you knew that they would).

"Well children, the playoffs were still uncertain on December 21st." The Jags, the jests, the Broncos, the Ravens...all stood in the Bills way. "Is this where Uncle tater comes in?!" the children would SHOUT. "Yes children, this is where Uncle tater gave the Bills the greatest gift of all!"

"Peace?" "Happiness?" "Good will toward men?" "Is that what Uncle tater gave us mommy?"

"No children, Uncle tater gave us

MORE COWBELL!!!!!!!

And the Bills did make the playoffs. What happened in the playoffs the children would want to know? Well that's a story for a different night.
