Merriman dominated practice today

Recommended Posts

First practice, but still good to hear he is going full speed and suffering no ill effects of injuries. The real key will obviously be opening day, and not even pre-season. But it's got to get you a little excited, no?

Outside linebacker Shawne Merriman was dominate during camp on Monday. He was constantly in the backfield blowing up plays.

He blew up Shawn Nelson on a play that got him to RB Fred Jackson. He got to Jackson from the edge so quickly he almost blew up the hand off.

He got himself outside to stop a screen for a loss.

He got to Ryan Fitzpatrick on one of the few times he threw as this practice was to concentrate on the run.

This is a good news & bad news scenario

The good news: Merriman looks good

The bad news: The O-line & TEs can't block.

I really hope he pans out.He could give us star power and credibility. And attract other players. And the greatest gift of all= pressure on tom brady.

But you thought we were fools to sign him to the extension.

Do you have a place where I wrote that fools part ?? If so, I'd like to read it. I wrote it's a risky deal, which it most certainly is. I think you need to find a new person to haunt.

In Merriman's prime nobody could block him for long. We should be so lucky he could get back to that.

No surprise about Nelson, he's not so good a blocker. Hopefully Lights-out can give us that mismatch vs other teams.

Honestly...has Merriman done anything good on the football field since he has been off steroids?

Merriman took 20 random drug tests in his first two years and 19 of them came clean. After he was apparently caught using, he was suspended four games. After serving the suspension, and likely off steroids, he got 8.5 sacks in 5 games. The first 7 games before the suspension, he got 8.5 as well. 17 for year but better after the suspension. The next full year he got 12.5 sacks. So yes, he probably did a lot in the league off steroids and since off steroids.

An injury is the only thing that is gonna stop this guy this year IMO. Do you know how frustrating it must be to be one of the best, and most popular young players in the NFL and then all of a sudden you have a couple of injuries back to back, and everyone thinks you suck and your career is over at age 26. That has to make him crazy, and so ready to prove everyone wrong. This guy is a physical speciman with or without steroids, so if he is healthy I have no doubt in my mind he will be huge for us this year. He is young, and it would not be a stretch to have just as good of years ahead of him as the past.

Me too Johnny!! I am always a realist, but I feel like they are putting the pieces together little by little. Would love one more linebacker though to feel comfortable unless Wannstedt, Merriman, and Edwards can finally get Maybin to do SOMETHING, ANYTHING!!!
