I know a lot of people like Quinn. I think he looks good but have only seen those 2 highlight tapes of him on Youtube. I was looking up Ponder clips and realised its the UNC game from 2009. Quinn is almost exclusively at right end, #42 and Austin is inside withthe dreads, #9

Thanks for posting, Thoner. What are you impressions on Quinn's play in this game versus Florida State?

I'll give you mine but I'd like to hear yours first.

Just watched both videos (the first and second half, obviously).

First, I like Ponder. Have been saying for months that he'd be a solid guy to take at 34.

Now, on to Quinn. I made sure to watch each play a few times to really focus on him and he didn't do much. The first half he saw a good amount of double teams. When he was not double teamed, he was able to push back the lineman a decent amount but even that didn't have much effect on Ponder or any of his throws. He (Quinn) got jammed up a lot by the lineman and was well contained. Didn't see Quinn use his hands much and try and disengage all that often. Quinn showed his bull and speed rushes. His bull rush was far more effective because he was able to collapse the pocket some. His speed rush was far less effective. He wasn't able to really beat his man and when he did, Ponder moved up into the pocket avoiding any type of pressure. But like I said, Quinn never really beat his man much when he was single covered. When he was doubled, he disappeared.

In the 2nd half, Quinn was double teamed far less than he was in the 1st and was still ineffective for the most part. He was locked up a lot of the time and couldn't get anything going. Again, I didn't really see much from Quinn in terms of using his hands. His rushes were pretty much ineffective as Quinn wasn't able to get by his man or apply any semblance of pressure or disrupt Ponder during any of his throws.

Overall: Quinn didn't really show much here. He had trouble beating his man and was double teamed some. Ponder also did a very good job in making quick reads and getting rid of the ball quickly which didn't give Quinn or the defensive line for that matter much time to get to him. FSU wasn't running the ball much (if at all) so you couldn't really see how Quinn did against the run. FSU obviously gameplanned against Quinn specifically by sending double teams at him and trying to get rid of the ball quickly before he or anybody else from Carolina's defense could get to him. For pretty much all of those clips, Quinn was a non factor. He finished the game with only 1 tackle and 0 QB hurries.

Thx for rehashing it. I watched a couple minutes and got bored. He looked completely ineffective from what i did see. But he did use a bull rush, so that means he doesn't "play small". That obviously means he plays the run well doesn't it? Can't wait to see what the anti-miller guys have to say about this video...if they say anything at all.

I pretty much saw what Bangarang saw.

As I've stated before, I like Quinn a lot…but not more than Miller.

A few more observations…Ponder did look excellent in that game and you can see why he's considered pro-ready and a great fit for a West Coast Offense. He made quick reads, got the ball out quickly and accurately. His footwork was polished. He showed sufficient arm and good athleticism.

In Quinn's defense, Florida State's attack was a clinic on how to negate a pass rush. Sometimes they kept the tight end in. Other times they chipped with a back. Almost all the plays were quick developing with short QB drops. They also ran a few delays and screens to keep the defense honest.

Now the bad part. I counted 35 plays. Quinn got pressure on three but two of those plays were screen passes where pass rushers are baited into getting close to the QB.

The most distressing part of Quinn's play was that Florida State was behind in the game and clearly throwing on most every down. In spite of this, Quinn showed a slow first step on the majority of the plays and did not anticipate the snap count well at all.

In fact in many of the plays, Quinn was the last lineman moving at the snap.

Excellent summary, Bangarang. While he was gameplanned for, and often double-teamed, Quinn was made a non-factor. I think Quinn has upside, but he was inconsistent a year ago. He'll have a better 2nd and 3rd year in the NFL, and needs to be on a team with a line that can make lanes for him.

Understand when watching these clips that they are from a PONDER highlight reel. They are not showing EVERY play, and they are not showing any sacks or bad offensive plays.

So for the most part, you're only going to see clips where Quinn was "ineffective".

Not making excuses for him, as Im not real high on him at #3 anyways. But something to keep in mind when watching the tapes.

For example, the first clip starts on 2nd and 9. What happened on first down? Did Quinn stuff the run? (probably not, but we'll never know)

Well, this is the first extensive action I have seen of him (if you can call this extensive). I wasnt too impressed honestly. Judging from this video, Im definitely not taking him at 3, or before guys like Jordan and Watt, Carimi, and heck even Phil Taylor are off the board. I thought he was clearly game planned against, and beat double teams decently well, but didnt get to the QB. I didnt think he did much of anything when singled up. He had a pretty weak bull rush and didnt disengage from his defender. I think he only had 1 QB hit in that video, and even though Ponder got rid of the ball very quickly, he wasnt in a position to make a play if Ponder had held onto the ball. I feel like he will be a better fit as a LB than a DE though, because he is more athletic than strong, and would be better in space. I also think that what Dr. Dank says has some merit it is a Ponder highlight tape after all. Somebody counted and said there were 35 plays, if you check the stats Ponder had 40 pass attempts and took two sacks. Quinn only had 1 assisted tackle. He may have caused those other two sacks, but they werent shown, so who knows. Either way, I would want consistent pressure of every down from my 3rd overall pick.

This is really just a weak LB class, and unfortunately we are pretty darn weak at LB. The guy I do really like on this team, is Kendrick Burney the CB. He had a few good reads you could see and played great at teh Sr Bowl.

Yea...Because they're going to show Ponder getting sacked and NAILED in a PONDER scouting report and Ponder highlight video.

35 snaps…almost every one a pass play. That's a good sample size.

Again, Quinn showed a poor first step and bad snap anticipation…he was often the last lineman moving at the snap...in spite of the fact that Florida State was passing on virtually every down.

I like Quinn. But I'm not gonna be an apologist for him.

OK. This is a Robert Quinn highlight video and he dominates everyone in his path. AND he can dance.

Well that was a better highlight package but it showed even less than the FSU video in terms of DE play.

After looking at those two videos Quinn is a 43 DE prospect at the moment. I know he's being projected as an OLB in a 34 but where is the video of him playing with his hand off the ground let alone playing pass defense? Nothing in either of those videos even hints at his ability to play OLB.

I'm not saying he can't. He certainly has the athletic ability but he's in for a bit of a transition period, IMO. I don't seeing him coming in playing lights out as an OLB his rookie year. I see him as a pass rush specialist until he gets the hang of a new position.

Nice dose of realism Dank. There are a bunch of youtube videos out there where Quinn is actually the focus. Ponder is the focus here. This Ponder highlight reel wouldn't be a highlight reel if Quinn or any other defender for that matter were draped all over him.

People and their hidden agendas man. Gets tiring like people aren't smart enough to see through the smear campaign by people who go after Quinn in thread after thread and strongly support who they believe is the "popular" consensus safe pick at #3.

The original poster starts a thread and calls it video of Quinn but in reality it's a Ponder high light reel????? Misleading subject and topic. A moderator should change the subject to Ponder highlight film.

BOOOOOOOOO!

I found a better video on Quinn. I've noticed in a lot of his videos that he shows GREAT discipline. Of all his characteristics, I like the fact that he plays under control. He's not just going 100 miles per hour to the ball. I like Quinn.

He looks like a man among boys in this video and he's only a sophmore. What I like is that he's got the Bruce Smith-like unreal lean when rushing the QB.

I'm amazed that both Dareus and Miller are rated higher than him. My hope is that the lack of Quinn to the Bills talk means that he's the one they like the most.

Good point. It'd be nice if our DEs and LBs could play with that same type of discipline.
