Maybin

Recommended Posts

He seemed to get overpowered turning the corner a lot in the beginning of the game, which would speak to his being undersized for a pass rusher. But he's improving a little, anyway. I really wish he would stop diving on people after the play, its going to result in a lot of personal foul penalties that this team can't absorb.

Perhaps it's symantecs, but I don't see him being overpowered as much as him losing balance. His primary move to the QB seems to be to try and rush around the tackle by dipping his shoulder. This puts him terribly off balance, so much so that a single good shove knocks him down or out of the play. When he plays straight up, he seems to get decent push and stay on his feet; but that dip move is total boom or bust - either he gets past the tackle or he gets knocked down. He needs, IMO, to use it less.

Sacks are what he was brought in to get, which in itself are a boom or bust stat. On a no doubt passing down if it is the move that he feels most comfortable using than why not go for it?

Do people just say this automatically? Or do they actually watch the game? Just because they are playing at the end of the 1st half or throughout the second half does not mean they are scrubs and are going to be cut. Give me a break.

Sure, Maybin got 2 sacks when starters were out. He also spun out of a double team and had a would be sack on O'Sullivan (intentional grounding) before the 1st half wound down. Lets collectively give him the credit he deserves and stop repeating overly generalized BS that demonstrates nothing other than you probably didn't watch the game.

I do not say things automatically. I have seen all of the games and recorded the first two. I will watch the third game on Monday (again), and record it.

Maybin plays as a situational pass rusher with the first string. In the second half he has been playing almost the entire half and it truly is against a large majorityt of 3rd and 4th teamers.

He has not put any pressure on the QB while playing against a first sting LT, that includes rookie LT Trent Williams. He did pressure the Cinci backup (O'Sullivan) at the very end of the first half yesterday, causing an intentional grounding.

He has showed some promise as a pass rusher in the second half of each game, he had some nice moves yesterday. His play against the run has been shoddy. He does not hold the point of attack very well.

I am not trying to blast him. We need him to develop and I hope he does. I still wonder why we took a project like him with so many good players on the draft board that year?

I would prefer he goes with what gives results. If that move is what he feels most comfortable with, then he needs to set that move up with several inside stunts/spins and a few bull rushes to get the tackle thinking he's going inside. Then on the critical down, do what's comfortable and use the speed move outside to run right past him. IMO, that's what Bruce so great. at; he set up guys and always seemed to get the key sack at just the right time. It's also what made Schobel less than great - he got sacks, but not at the key junctures in the game. So, IMO, Maybin needs to learn to set up the linemen and that means gettting away from his speed, dip the shoulder move on every other play. I have all the confidence in the world hw will learn that.

Maybin is looking much, much better. The kid has instinct to get to the QB -- if only he can harness that instinct for pass coverage, we may have something special in a couple years.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS: BRIAN ORAKPO

In Orakpo, the Redskins have an elite pass-rusher who's learning how to separate quarterbacks from the ball.

What I love about Orakpo is his willingness to make changes. He's constantly in the film room studying offensive tackles and he doesn't want any of them to have a book on him. He has a wide array of counter moves and he's quickly embraced the concepts of Jim Haslett's 3-4. Here's what Orakpo told me during my recent visit to Ashburn, Va.:

"I'm always going forward in this defense" he said. "I want to be chasing the quarterback at all times, and this defense makes that possible."

THAT is THEE PROBLEM with Aaron Maybin. He needs to develop his counter-moves...bottom line.

Every LB or DE better be able to play the run first. If not they will play 1 down in 4.

If you think it is wise to use pick #11 of the entire draft on that then so be it.

Bryce Paup was pretty nice with the whole pass defense thing... We can get value out of a player even if they are a pass rushing specialist!

As far as the original comparison back in the day, I still believe he could be a Cornelius Bennett type.

The only thing special for Maybin needs to be Special Teams play or he will be cut.

Are you joking?????

Bennett was excellent in all aspects of the game. He could have played 3-4 or 4-3 with the same sucess. He had size, strength and speed. He could play the run, cover, and rush from the edge. He was a natural talent and a walk on starter for the Bills without even attending training camp!! He was a Pro Bowl Player. He was a player that other teams had to game plan against and account for.

Maybin, on the other hand, is on the 3rd string and plays behind the likes of Reggie Torbor and Chris Ellis.

Please stop with the Bennett comparisons. That is just painful to hear.

He only looked good agaisnt the Bungals scrubs, many of whom wont be on the Bungals much longer.

Ill be impressed when he can compete with the starters

The one time he was in on 3rd down in the first half and he actually did a decent job of pushing back the LT for the Bengals. Other than that, Maybin time has been strictly celebrated in Scrubville

Serious? Because a person has a different perspective than you they didn't watch the game rendering them ignorant to your observation. I watched Maybing personally at Penn State, in person in Buffalo, on tv this preseason and in person in Wash this preseason. So from a person who has watched him for seveal yeas, in person, I'll tell you this. Maybin looks terrible against first team NFL players, both in practice and against opponents. He only had 1 move in college and no counters, but was quick. This boded well for him in college, against inferior teams resulting in inflated stats.

I hated the Maybin pick and stand by it, he only looks good against 2nd-4th teamers. But I do see a little improvement. He is working on a counter move for the 1st time, put on a little size and has a good motor. He also didn't celebrate and showboat after his sack saturday. He may stil develop into the pass rusher he was supposed to be, and if he quits the premadonna act I'll give him some more time. I have used the BUST word to describe hm in the past, now I'm not so sure.

Like him or hate him, he's the closest thing to a pass rusher we have.

Chris Ellis is gonna get sacks? Marcus Stroud?

For our defense to be anything, Aaron Maybin better have some rush.

And it's not all about sacks. Hurries are good too. Just make the QB uncomfortable

in the pocket.
