"We cannot yet fully separate the performance of a receiver from the performance of his quarterback. Be aware that one will affect the other."

Too funny...

What also was funny was that Josh Reed's catch percentage was 14 points more than Evans' catch percentage (with the same QBs).

Yeah, and that would have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that reed was often on the field matched up against a nickel back and never really ran a pass pattern over 4 yards.

Not picking on your point. Just the basement websites that think they've 'cracked the code' to developing ways to rank players like this.

p.s. Capt. Checkdown's naturally going to have more success with the slot guy running 5-7 yard routes than a WR going further downfield.

FWIW, according to Football Outsiders, Evans had a 46% catch percentage. This does not necessarily indicate dropped passes, but is a reflection of what percentage of the passes thrown to him were completed. By contrast, Josh Reed's catch rate was 60%.

Football Outsiders WR Stats

That's not really a fair comparison. Reed was a short route player and Evans was usually down the field. Therefore, the passes to Lee were often not accurate enough to be caught.

. . . or maybe Evans could learn a few more routes . . . or maybe he can play like a "number 1" wr should be able to and avoid being taken out of games.

So what you are saying is that Evans does not match up as well against whoever is covering him.

The thing about Evans is that he is not a bad receiver. He is pretty good. Yet, unlike the elite receivers making the kind of money he does, he can be taken out of games by the other team.

That was an impressive trait for us as we looked for big, fast receivers. [General Manager] Buddy [Nix] and I both believe in having [on] the outside the biggest guys you can get out there to play that position."

This Statement by Gailey pretty much says Evans is not their guy! Maybe he will be playing the slot

Just because that is their ideal does NOT mean they don't like what they have. Nice try.

Garbage stats.

You guys are crazy if you think Lee Evans won't be the starting #1 WR on the Bills this season.

At this point there is no clear #2 WR from what I see, and as for the slot I would think CJ Spiller will be in that position more then anyone else.

Just because the HC states he likes bigger receivers on the outside doesn't mean Evans will be moved inside.

Maybe 2009 was just a frustrating year. After being in Buffalo for all of these rebuilds maybe he was just down in the dumps. T.O. and all the past issues he just said F it this year is a joke. Didn't most of us as fans say that? He's only human and unfortunately that's part of life. It sucks, but I wouldn't doubt that kind of mindset not only sunk in to him but several others. Anyone think about that?

Maybe "Captain Checkdown" didn't want to force it to Evans and nobody else could get open and create mismatches.

Oh wait, maybe that's why we brought in Spiller.

Even if Spiller doesn't score a ton, he will dictate defensive attention (maybe double teams), and hopefully away from Evans.

Additionally, on defense, I think the FO believes that Troupe will demand two blockers.

A theme perhaps?

there was much talk about how all Lee Evans needed was another WR to take the heat off him...so they signed TO for 6 or 7 million...how did that work out?...like we even had an passing offense last year after finishing 30th in the league...and is why most fans wanted the OL addressed this year - so shell-shocked capt. check-down could make more than a 5 yard completion.

Sorry to insult your hero Lee Evans! What are you going to do when they cut his ass?

I can't believe you guys are bitching about Evans. bills fans are so fickle. In one breath some of you complain we don't keep our best players. Then, we re-sign one of our best players and now he is not good enough. Who cares if he's making a few more million than you think he's worth. You dont sign the check what the hell do you care. Lee Evans is the best we got right now. Maybe with an intelligent oc/head coach we will get a little more out of him.

Last season he was single every game and he still didn't have a breakout season! When has he broken a tackle? When has he taken a big time hit and still caught the ball? He earns 9 million per year, which is 8 million to much for what he gives the Bills

Actually, since you asked, in the snow game against Cleveland in 07, with around a minute to go made a great catch at the Cleveland 25 on third or fourth and long and was really hammered on the play. He ended up requiring surgery for the hit. It got the Bills a first down, though, and led to them getting inside the 10. Of course they lost, but he made a huge catch while getting truly leveled at a key moment.
