Watson, a free agent tight end who played his entire six-year career with the New England Patriots, has signed a three-year deal with the Browns. As first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, it's a $12 million contract with $6.35 million guaranteed. A league source who confirmed the deal to PFT says the $6.35 million guaranteed will be paid out completely in the first year of the deal. The 29-year-old Watson played in all 16 games for the Patriots last season, starting seven and catching 29 passes for 404 yards and five touchdowns. With Watson going to the Browns, you can't use the "he probably didn't want to come here" excuse either. If we miss the boat on Kennedy, I think we'll officially be out of free agents who could of helped this team. Oh yeah, there will be another free agency after the draft....... He had 5 TDs last year as the 3rd or 4th option. No thought went into that post. The Pats drafted him to be an elite tight end. That's why they let Graham go. He's a solid player but in the eyes of a lot of Pats* fans, he's a disappointment. He had some big drops and the reason he isn't a bigger option is because Brady loses faith in him. He made some great plays, but he didn't materialize to be the elite TE they though he would. So, what did Belichick, Brady and Co. do? They made Watson less an emphasis in the offense, took advantage of his developing skills as a blocker and looked elsewhere more often with the passing game. Watson was supposed to be a Pro Bowl talent, a freakish package of athletic skills. But when he was the best option for the passing game – on a wide receiver thin 2006 Patriots team – he didn’t exactly dominate. When he was packaged with elite talents around him like Randy Moss and Wes Welker, he couldn’t maximize his opportunities in regards to big plays, mismatches and changing games as a middle-of-the-field playmaker. What’s that tell us? That Watson wasn’t a very good football player and clearly not a guy capable of consistently making plays at a high level. Watson actually drops alot of passes if you look we are not the only teams taking this approach and I believe we will be ok with Nelson and Schouman.
