Colts Offense Line looking in other direction?

It is just a Colts blog but I thought that Polian was universally declared as a GM guru who did not draft any busts?

The recent woes of the o-line in short yardage, and in running yardage period, have not been the result of a philosophy. When
and
were working up front, the Colts were able to run the football with tremendous results.
The issue with the current o-line is that Polian has busted two high round picks:
and
. Both players suck, and when you spend back-to-back second round picks in consecutive years on crappy talent, it is going to hurt your o-line.

The key is not to bring in "bigger" guys. The key is for Polian to draft guys who "do not suck." Remember, Glenn and Meadows were not drafted by Bill Polian. Former VP of Football Operations Bill Tobin took those guys in 1997, the year before Polian was hired.

That's all a lie. Bill Polian and anyone else named Bill (except Bills) don't make mistakes.

Buffalo is the only team that make personnel mistakes, as I am told on this board.

Polian is overall very great but the old saying "the draft is a crap shoot" was started for a reason.

To all the folks that talk about Indy, NE and NO and how their lines are made up of mid-rounders ... well this is the reason for it in Indy. Two second round offensive lineman riding the pine. Oouch!

Big difference busting on a second round pick versus a first rounder. And Polian hasn't done in that in, oh, forever.

One can continue attempting to conflate the argument between an outstanding GM and people the Bills hire, but it's useless. The draft is not a crap shoot, some have more talent picking players than others. It may not be as scientific as some want, but the fact is teams like IND, SD, BAL, NE, NYG, PHI, GB, and PIT have a much better record at drafting than most of the other 24 teams.

Yes it is. If it wasn't, you wouldn't have teams selecting guys like Ryan Leaf, or Mike Williams for example. Those were players that were expected to be worthy of being chosen in the first round, and are now Busts. Its also how you end up with guys like Brady, not being picked until very late in the draft, or going undrafted and being Pro Bowlers

I agree that over a long period of time the better drafters will prevail. Good timing and good luck should not be discounted though.

Over the past decade the Colts ranked 2 compared to the Bills ranking 28.

Over the past decade the Colts had a winning % of .701 compared to the Bills winning % of .417

Over the past decade the Colts won 101 games compared to the Bills winning 60

Over the past decade the Colts have been in the playoffs 8 times compared to 0 for the Bills.

It is evident that Bill Polian and his staff with the Colts make a lot less personnel mistakes than the front office staff of the Bills do.

Actually that's 1 superbowl in 5 trips. Who knows if he had stayed in Buffalo we may have won one of those other two.

Polian is a draft guru and a genius at evaluating and drafting talent. He built the superbowl bills and the colts. But nobody ever said he never makes a mistake, or makes a poor draft selection. He is not god - but he is a hall of famer

It's like clockwork.

If someone here points out a negative about another team, the first or second response will always be about how they thought only the Bills were failures.

It's a very tired formula. It took about 6-7 years of mismanagement and lousy football for douchebags to stop posting "We're Dooomed" in response to every perceived slight on Bills management. I'm wondering how long this "Promo the Robot" response pattern will perpetuate.

Offensive lines are all about building a concept that works to be greater then the sum of its parts. Good Offensive lines have to play with each other for about 2 full seasons (30 or so games) so I think that there are 2 key things in forming a good offensive lines.

1- Talent that mixes well - You either need a power blocking line or a speedy cutting zone line. You can't mix and match talent your O-line needs a good concept.

2- Health - How do you get players to play with each other? They have to stay healthy imagine if Eric Wood played all 16 games we would have had a nice interior line going forward.

I think Polian is great. But he has also had Peyton Manning all those years. If the Bills had Manning for the last decade they would have a much better record. Yes, I know Polian chose him over Ryan Leaf, but the real point is, when you have a great QB, the wins will come (the Bills getting a QB is all I really wanna talk about).

A key to having a solid draft is to not be picking in the top two-thirds of the draft order.

That's something Polian had the luxury of during most of his stint in Buffalo and in Indy.

A low first round pick is more like a high second round pick and by then, the beauty queen work-out warriors are already picked up by the trashy teams who are drafting to fill a need or to sell tickets - or in the case of a certain franchise that shall remain nameless - another defensive back (because you just never can have enough DBs).

Well, nobody every said that Bill Polian was perfect. But he did draft Peyton Manning with his first pick as Colts' GM, and he did draft Marvin Harrison, Edgerin James, Dwight Freeney, Joseph Adai, Anthony Rodriguez, Dallas Clark, and on and on and on. His Colts have won a SB during his time there, and his Colts do have an amazing sparkling new stadium complete with a retractable roof, which cost more then both the new baseball and football stadiums combined just down the road in Cincinnati, and I have not heard or read one single word out of the state of Indiana or city of Indianapolis about how outraged those residents are that they built such an expensive stadium when they did not have to.

So anybody on this board want to disagree with me that I wish Polian had never left Buffalo, even though he drafted two second round OL-men that "suck"???:worthy:

prior to this past decade they had the #1 overall pick in the draft coincedently Payton Manning was available during the draft, It was one in your face no questions asked player that was available at that #1 spot. Anyone with an IQ score of 15 or higher could have made that selection. This is the reason for the Colts success, call it luck or whatever you want but to pin some kind of label on Polian as some kind of mastermind for assembling the colts is rediculous, it fell into there laps.

Getting into the SB sure sounds better than touting a team which can't even make the playoffs for more than a decade in a system designed for parity.

Under Polian the Bills went to the SB four consecutive years and drafted Kelly. During his short stint with Carolina he got an expansion team into the playoffs. Over the past decade his Colts' team is ranked #2 (New England #1) while the Bills are ranked 28. When Polian's career is over he will be inducted into the HOF as a GM.

Maybe it is better to acknowledge excellence instead of tolerating mediocrtiy?

yes there is no doubt he has put together some good teams however he has 1 championship which is more the result of Payton Manning then Bill Polian.
