BillsPhan Posted January 6, 2010 Share Posted January 6, 2010 I don't get it. The Giants are hot to hire DJ as their defensive coordinator. Now I read that the Bears are hot to get Fewell back and make him their DC. Two teams that both have been in the SB within the past 4 years, think that those two coaches would improve their respective defenses. How on earth could the Bills, who had BOTH of them working together at the same time for 3 plus seasons, have had such terrible defenses during their time together??? Only in good old Buffalo. The Bears and Giants have always been proud of stopping the run like....forever. So they both want the two guys that combined to put one of the WORST run defenses over a 3 year period in NFL history out on the field for the Buffalo Bills. Say all you want about the players the Bills drafted and signed during their time together, if these guys are so highly thought of as respective DC's for such excellent franchises, logic dictates that they should have been able to finish higher then freakin' number 30 against the run at least one of those 3 seasons together! thewildrabbit Posted January 6, 2010 Share Posted January 6, 2010 I have serious doubts that Jauron ends up with the NY Giants considering they run a completely different defense then the Tampa 2, and want to keep it that way. Tom Coughlin is a defensive minded coach, he will find the proper guy. Chicago may hire Perry Fewell because he knows the Tampa 2, that is of course if the GM there wants to continue running that scheme. Fewell was able to hide some huge gaping holes in our defense for 4 years and shown he can pull together a defense full of small, slow street free agents. That's nothing short of coaching your ass off. 3. Being a coordinator is about X's and O's. Keep Jauron out of the war room, don't let him shop for the groceries, keep him far away from your offense, and let him do the things he has shown some competence in doing in the past and he might work out OK. The Bills might not have to pay Jauron all of his remaining salary if Jauron gets a new job. I will believe it when I see it though. Bryan Scott? Jon Corto? I might argue that the scheme LED to some of the injuries (the same undersized-LBs drum Sal's been beating), but you make a valid point. Could the outcome of the Browns game, or even the Saints or Texans ones, have been different if the offense had shown any sign of competence? I think the poor run stopping has to do with the major lack of LB talent onboard. On the line the run stopping was fine, it was just that if a runningback broke the line they often went for major gains. If you'd take out the runs that should have been stopped at the LB level I think the run stopping stats would be around 15-10-ish. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
vincec Posted January 7, 2010 Share Posted January 7, 2010 The Tampa 2 scheme is never going to be strong against the run, especially with today's zone blocking offenses. The linebackers are too open to blockers and the lanes between the DL are too wide. Does Indy have weak defensive players as well? They can't stop the run either. That doesn't mean that the defense can't work in terms of keeping points off the board. If you can drastically reduce big plays (almost all of which come in the passing game) and get off the field on most third downs, then you will stop drives because very few opponents can sustain drives all the way down the field without a negative play or penalty. The defensive secondary is good and deep. Byrd started the season as a backup! The defense faced a lot of second- or third-rate offenses. Any time you're going up against the likes of Derek Anderson, in extremely lousy weather conditions no less, it's not going to be too difficult to look good against the pass. Add to that two games against the rookie Sanchez . . . This defense has its weaknesses. The DBs often play soft coverage, so to beat it you use a "death by a thousand small cuts" offense. And you work the intermediate passing game over the middle. However, the offenses the Bills have faced have (typically) not been good enough to do those things well on a consistent basis. You may want to remember that he was Coughlin's DC in Jax and, while they played a LOT of Cover-2 (as every team does), the Tampa 2 was in it's infancy. Jauron can coach and implement any defense although his preference is for 7 man fronts. GO BILLS!!! No, he can't. He is terrible no matter what system. I hope he was a madoff loser.
