That's the famous one, but I always prefered the monologue Ned Beatty gives in Network...one of the best I've ever seen. It's a long read, but worth it. You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it, is that clear?! You think you have merely stopped a business deal -- that is not the case! The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back. It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity, it is ecological balance! You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations! There are no peoples! There are no Russians. There are no Arabs! There are no third worlds! There is no West! There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multi-variate, multi-national dominion of dollars! petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars!, Reichmarks, rubles, rin, pounds and shekels! It is the international system of currency that determines the totality of life on this planet! That is the natural order of things today! That is the atomic, subatomic and galactic structure of things today! And you have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and you will atone! Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale? (pause) You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen, and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and Dupont, Dow, Union Carbide and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today. What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state -- Karl Marx? They pull out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories and minimax solutions and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments just like we do. We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably deter- mined by the immutable by-laws of business. The world is a business, Mr. Beale! It has been since man crawled out of the slime, and our children, Mr.Beale, will live to see that perfect world in which there is no war and famine, oppression and brutality --one vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock, all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused. And I have chosen you to preach this evangel, Mr. Beale.

A few weeks ago TD realized after all these years he's not cool anymore. After this realization, he went on a 5 day drinking binge in an attempt to “cool up”. When he finally came out of his haze, he looked in the mirror and saw that he still wasn’t cool. After this binge he then "found god" and now busies himself with volunteering in the community at old folks homes, soup kitchens and mentoring young children. Next week he will again look in the mirror and see if his latest attempt to “cool up” worked. You can now see why he's had absolutely no time to deal with free agency.

This report doesn't sound right to me. Travis doesn't have the right to refuse the trade and if the Cardinals are not wanting to give him a multiyear deal then I don't see the problem...usually its the other way around, the team wants a multiyear deal but the player wants to be able to test free agency early so they won't sign a long term deal. I also can't believe the Cards would want to trade a LT for a guy with one year on his contract without locking him up long term. Why do I have the feeling that this report got it backwards and its Henry that doesn't want the extension.

Jennings looks a lot different on ESPN

Those "projected landing spots" are a joke. They list the same 5-6 teams over and over and over again. -
I actually lived in Sevierville for 5 years, about a mile from the strip in Pigeon Forge. The poster that talked about the traffic is spot on, be prepared to sit in some major traffic jams during much of the summer. Growing up we actually couldn’t buy ice cream or anything else that couldn’t sit in the car for at least an hour on the way home. As for how fun Pigeon Forge is, that's depends on what you like to do. There is lots of miniature golf, go-carts, the water park and craft type stuff (and Dollywood, which imo, sucks) and that type of thing. I’d say you could spend a day at Dollywood and a day doing the other stuff in Pigeon Forge before getting bored with it. I'm more partial to the outdoor activities of the Smokies, not the tourist stuff in Pigeon Forge. If I was planning a vacation to the Smokies (I live in NYC now, not TN) I'd get a chalet in Gatlinburg or Townsend and avoid Pigeon Forge like the plague.

I guess I'm the only one that feels pity for the guy. Yeah yeah, I know his history. But still, a young guy is on top of the world in his freshman year of college and because of a few really bad decisions he's f'ed up any dreams he may have had...and these are the decisions of an 18-20 year old. Imagine making some stupid mistakes (like we all did) when you were 18 that messes up your entire future or compromises your lifelong dreams...I pity the guy somewhat, as much as I'm not a fan of his behavior. That being said I hope the Bills don't even consider drafting the kid. Anybody that gets so down on himself that he ups and quits isn't the type of guy I want on my team.

Me trying to stir the pot? Wtf was the point of his post, tell me how its relevant to the topic of this thread please.

Why does it sound like you long for the return of those days? What does this have to do with anything that happened in the video?

Stick them in the AFC and see what happens.

There are players that put up numbers and players that just get the job done on the field, numbers be damned...which one was Bledsoe?
-
Who cares about a camp battle? Camp does not equal actual games. We've seen exactly what we get from Drew in actual games, now we need one more camp to see what he's got? That would be a waste of development time for Losman. Had Drew done the job in the first place Losman would have never been drafted by the Bills. Drew needs to look in the mirror and realize his failings instead of acting as if he didn't "get a chance to win the job." He had three years to cement the job and couldn't get it done. Time to move on.

Well, he is right in a sense. Steroids don't help you "hit the ball" because that is hand eye coordination...however, they surely help with bat speed, which in turn helps with HRs...which of course he won't admit to because he's in spin doctor mode though, what do you expect?

The funniest sentence I've read in a long time...thanks for the laugh!

Joe Schad has had a busy day!

Bledsoe was never mobile or feiry...Losman is more like a young Favre, though we'll see if he pans out as well as Favre did.

With the DB issue not finished but pretty much

This biggest problem I had with his inconsistancy is that he never gave us that "big" game. He'd have plenty of clunkers and then come back with a solid outing. He wasn't a feast or famine QB, he was a square meal or famine QB....which isn't good enough. If you're going to suck sometimes you had better have some Brett Favre like big games at other times. -

I'd take Brad Johnson as our backup QB, he might just be the perfect candidate. -
Then you weren't watching the games. Milloy might have been the defensive MVP this year if not for TKO...when he came back from his injury the D stepped it up several notches; Milloy makes the entire D much better. But go on thinking he's not making a difference and continue to display your utter ignorance about the subject.

Oh stfu...I have a son and agree with him completely. How about looking at the content of his post instead of the "I don't have a child" part.

I would never tell anybody what is great and what isn't. You'll never hear me claiming, "such and such is the greatest film ever." No matter how much I know about the subject, I'll never feel I know enough to make such an arrogant statement. I'm not speaking about the greatness of LOTR, I'm speaking purely of the ability of people to make a valid argument. In the end everything is subjective, you are correct. However, if you have no knowledge of a subject in question your opinion means holds no weight. Its the equivalent of somebody not following politics and saying they think Bush is the worst president that ever and knowing very little about previous presidents and their policies. Sure, you're welcome to your opinion, but without some sort of foundation of knowledge that opinion isn't worth much. As for Visconte's "supposed" great works, this speaks precisely to what I was talking about earlier. If someone watches mostly Hollywood films and gets accustomed to a very specific type of filmmaking and then is thrown something like Visconte, of course they're not going to like it. That being said, there are plenty of people with backgrounds in film that also dislike Visconte’s films. The liking or disliking of his films isn't what's important, it’s the ability to make a coherent and intelligent argument about the films...and not just in a literary sense (which is how just about all people, and critics, judge films...because that's the background they have, literature). As I said before, at its foundation my problem is one of semantics. There is a big difference between saying “favorite” and “greatest”…one had better know what they’re speaking about if they start throwing around the latter because it’s the type of statement that can, and should, be challenged. The ironic thing is that the more one knows about a subject, the less likely they are to throw around those types of statements because they understand how little they really know. I also find it humorous that you have such a distain for the academic community. It’s a pure defense mechanism; you must feel this way to justify your position. Think of it a different way. What if I started throwing around statements about somebody else’s area of expertise, say, Bio Chemistry? Would my opinions on the subject (something I know zero about) be just as valid as a Bio Chemists? I mean, all that academic stuff is pure hogwash!

I don't want to rip into posters who love these movies (I own them and enjoy the hell out of them as well) but I keep seeing things like this thrown around; "Best work of art ever", "best films ever", "will never be equaled.” So a question: how much about film, its theories and its history (both domestic and international) do you know? Have you seen the films of Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, Renoir, Ozu, Tati, Bresson and a plethora of others I can't possibly list here? Having seen those films are you really equipped with the knowledge to understand what those filmmakers were doing and how they went about doing it? Film is a language, and like any language the more one learns about it the more one is able to understand its subtleties and complexities. Most of the people throwing around this praise I'd assume have a very limited understanding of film. I’d assume most here have a pretty high reading level, so this might be a pretty good analogy: Dr. Seuss wrote some great books, for what they were. But once one progressed in their understanding of the English language these books weren't enough to satiate your appetite for something more. Someone without a background in film saying the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is the "best piece of art work ever" is like someone with a 2nd grade reading level calling "Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?" the greatest piece of literature ever written. It is a good book, hell it might be the one I enjoy reading to my son the most (well, that or “The Sneetches”)…but simply enjoying it and it being “the greatest piece of literature ever” are two different things. I'm sure I'll get some angry replies to this as most people don't appreciate being told they don't know something (and it tends to piss them off). That's okay, let'er rip! Anyway, it’s a game of semantics I suppose. I have no problem with someone calling the films their “favorite of all time” or something of the like, but if you start throwing around praise as the “greatest film of all time” you had better be able to back it up with a comprehensive knowledge of film. Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine.
