  1. You'd think that, but from the few sites I read, it's more about the fact that blacks were portrayed as buffoons, not that they couldn't be in the show/audience. But that brings up a good point -- ask someone WHY it's offensive and see what the answer is. "Because it always has been that way," is probably the answer. This thread reminds me of the brief furor over "master/slave" (as it relates to hard drives) in California many years ago: http://slashdot.org/story/03/11/25/0014257/la-county-bans-use-of-masterslave-term
  2. I still don't understand why blackface is so offensive. First of all, it came from the 1800s... Can't we move past some things? Should I be offended because of Super Mario Brothers? Or any other Italian stereotype that doesn't paint Italians in a positive light? Second, from reading about the background (I knew next to nothing about it - didn't even know people were offended by it!), it appears that it's not really the blackface that was offensive back in the day, it was the portrayal of black people as being stupid and buffoons. That's not what happened here - so shouldn't people be offended by what a person is doing, not by what they're wearing? Reading page after page of people being "outraged" at others painting their face black for Halloween (or for a school project) just seems stupid if it's clearly not malicious and not being done in the same vein as the minstrel shows.
  3. Another trailer released today:
  4. FB is sitting on a treasure trove of data. With data mining using unclassified data (Hadoop, for example), they can probably predict nearly anything about anyone on their platform. It's a marketing company's dream... And there's lots of value in that.
  5. My former dentist looked a lot like her. Made going to the dentist a LOT nicer. Then she got married and moved away. http://profile.ak.fb...1808_7563_n.jpg She was really nice too.
  6. Got Alexander Mogilny's autograph at the Summit Park Mall in NF, NY in the early 90s. Met Seth Green (Buffy, Robot Chicken, etc) at CES this past January. Saw Alex Rodriguez when he played in Appleton, WI (single-A ball). Didn't meet him, but he was about 5-10' from me. Saw him play two games - he sucked (1 hit, something like 6 strikeouts). Was called up to the Mariners a couple of weeks later and the rest is history...
  7. IMHO, he will win/lose by 1 percentage point, similar to how he won 1.5 years ago.
  8. That's a load of hogwash and if you lived in the state, you'd know it. The barrier for a recall election is VERY LOW. You only need signatures from 25% of the people who voted in the election. So you get two million people voting, you only need 500,000 of them to sign a piece of paper to trigger a recall. What second place politician DOESN'T get 25% of the vote in the real election, let alone be able to get some signatures on a piece of paper? There's a reason that there were a ton of recall elections late last year -- because the barrier is TOO low. Last summer there was a State Supreme Court election. While judges are not supposed to be on a "side," it was clear that Prosser was the "Republican" candidate and Kloppy was the "Democrat" candidate. All of the dems were making it out to be a referendum on Walker -- and how the state was going to revolt and Kloppy was going to win. Guess who the Supreme Court justice is? Prosser. It was a very close election -- but that's because the state is still roughly 50/50 in politics in general. Also, did you know the website to recall Walker was registered the day of the election? Almost like the left was planning this, regardless of what policies he put in place.....
  9. The total number of signatures was nowhere near two million. It was actually under one million! http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/gab-authorizes-4-senate-recall-elections-ab4hj00-142337285.html And there's quite a bit of talk in the state right now about the fact that only 650,000 democrats voted in the primary... Scott Walker, who was being challenged in the primaries by a "fake Democrat" (you know, the tactic that the left complained about when the Republicans did it) had almost as many votes as all of the democrats combined -- in a primary that he didn't really need. Not sure if that'll predict the future, but it's curious to say the least and makes you wonder how many of the signatures were fakes. Will it be a close election? Of course it will -- it was close the first time. But it's ridiculous that my tax dollars are paying for another election because some babies don't realize that "elections have consequences." Apparently that's only true when THEIR side wins.
  10. I was replying to the mouse comment -- which Apple didn't use until 1984 and a half-dozen other companies had used before Apple's Lisa. Yes, they had a tour (along with other companies), but they hardly "stole" the mouse from Xerox. Other technologies are obviously up for debate.
  11. No they didn't. "Around 1981 Xerox included mice with its Xerox Star, based on the mouse used in the 1970s on the Alto computer at Xerox PARC. Sun Microsystems, Symbolics, Lisp Machines Inc., and Tektronix also shipped workstations with mice, starting in about 1981." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse_%28computing%29 Also, read this and learn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Engelbart
  12. Heh -- I start teaching tomorrow.

  14. The days of 5 year contracts for first rounders done?
  15. Spoken like a true fanboy.
  16. I think he would've ended up being a good QB if not for our horrendous OL. The guy got clobbered so much that he became timid, always preparing to get crushed and not really focusing on the game. If we had an average-to-good OL, things may have turned out differently. We'll never know.
  17. So why were you searching for videos of Rob Johnson.....?
  18. It's absolutely crazy how Dave/Rachel were able to win tonight. Crazy. But I'm glad it was them instead of Art/JJ.
  19. Thanks, everyone. I could have the worst phone in existence and I wouldn't care - because my company pays 100% of it - free unlimited minutes/data FTW!

  21. Really? I'd think most wouldn't. Rachel is insecure -- but put yourself in her shoes. Vanessa's been cruel to her the entire race -- what would she have said seeing Rachel without any hair? She would've been brutal. That, and I fully expect an equalizer early on, so any lead they would've received from the FF would've been minimal I think.
  22. eBay is rife with scammers too. A couple of years ago I sold an expensive film scanner on eBay - the auction went for almost $1700, and the device was in perfect condition. The winner told me he had a project he needed to get done quickly, so I sent it out very promptly after getting paid via PayPal. A week after the guy gets it, he tells me that it doesn't scan properly - that there's yellow lines through each image he scans. His proof? He takes a picture of the monitor instead of sending me the actual picture files. I tried working with him for a couple of weeks, and the story changed -- first there were lines, then there were error messages. I kept telling him to try a different computer or send me some proof, but he would never comply - just said he knows how to use computers and that the product is clearly faulty and he wants his money back (despite the ad specifically saying no returns). Well guess what? eBay is VERY buyer-friendly. 30 days after the auction ended, he filed a complaint saying the product "wasn't as advertised," and based on eBay's rules, I was required to refund his money once he shipped the scanner back to me. The big scam here is that eBay doesn't care WHAT you send back -- and people frequently send rocks or other garbage so that they get the product AND the money. At least this scammer sent me the scanner back. I tested it out, it worked fine, and I re-listed it. A photo processing company ended up winning the auction (for a little less, but not much), and they said it worked fine for them as well. I had a little on my shoulder though. eBay's rules say that if the buyer returns the product that they have to have signature confirmation -- and he only had delivery confirmation. I was SOOOOOO tempted to say, "I'm sorry, I didn't receive anything," and keep my money and the scanner. But then I'd be committing fraud as well, so it just wasn't worth it (and it all ended well anyway). But scammers are everywhere - it sucks. I have a Canon 10-22mm lens that I'd like to sell, but I don't want to do eBay and I don't want to do Craigslist, so I'm kinda stuck.
  23. Why? Everyone I know who has one seems to like it... I know it's a Dodge and all and they don't have the best reputation going back throughout the years, but like I said - everyone who has one seems to love 'em.... /sigh
  24. Only RWD - can't do that in MN.
