What will TD do with $16-17M Cap Space?
JP-era replied to joesz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well said. Fortunately, I think we have lots of options. ( I hope this is in chronological order). LT- 1) We can watch what FA brings us and choose to pay top dollar for a stud LT if available. 2) Resign JJ to a reasonable contract (reasonable is not a fair term to use, a touch to vague), maybe something like 4 mill per. 3) We could move Mike to LT and sign a cheaper RT, maybe someone like Kareem McKenzie 4) I dont see the draft being a good avenue. Great LT's should probably be drafetd early, it will take a while to develop one, and we need an upgrade to Jennings or Jennings at that spot right away, especially with a very yound QB possibly at the helm. LG- 1) We again can wait and see whats out there. I think we will sign ourselves this years version of Villarial at say 3 mill per and end the whole issue right there. Could be Rivera, Coleman, or Andruzzi. 2) The draft may be a good spot for us to grab one, between Elton Brown, David Baas, and CJ Brooks we will have a shot at a decent one in the 2nd round. G can start right away and wont be stuck on an island which helps them to be good early. TE 1) I think we grab one from FA, Franks or Becht maybe Wiggins. Probably can be done for 2-3 mill per. 2) Heath Miller is great but figure to be long gone by our picks, Alex Smith from Stanford is a guy I like and would probably be there in the 2nd maybe 3rd if we wanted him. K 1) Probably the draft, and yes Nugent in the 2nd, I hope its a higher 2nd from a Travis trade. or 1a would be to get Vinateri but he probably wont go anywhere. Word is that he is indeed going to test the market before signing the a typical cheapskate Pats contract. RB 1) Draft figure to have somne late round guys with speed JJ Arrington, Darren Sproles, Walter Reyes, all look pretty good. CB 1) This may be a sleeper. I like McGee personally but I know others are not as fond of him at CB. I think TD has some cards up his sleeve and this might be one spot. I think TD wants to land a stud LT first but will quickly change to studs at other positions if need be. With the rumored interest in Surtain by us, I think he has in mind landing a stud CB to give us the best secondary in the league and to lessen a potential blow in 2006 if Clements leaves. Again, our option for a stud LT has to be gone before he even goes here but maybe hes looking at: Ken Lucas, Fred Smoot, Charles Woodson (if let go), or maybe a trade for Surtain. how about Law who might be cut if he doesnt take a paycut. 2) If we dont go the above route I think we get one from the draft in mid rounds and trust in McGee as our starter. I honestly havent watched the CB prospects enough to have any real opinion on who. WR 1) This could be the other potential sleeper spot. TD may pay decent money or even big money to land another WR. I have a feeling that TD and co. feel they should add as much talent to the supporting cast as possible to help out JP. I dont see us grabbing a Plax Burress unless he is in love with him, but maybe a young guy who productive like TJ Housh or Travis Taylor or Alex Bannister. I just have a strange feeling that we are going to make a sleeper FA grab, maybe this is a spot, you wouldnt think so with the restructure of Moulds. 2) Draft, I love this as a spot to grab in the draft. Jerome Mathis and Chauncey Stovall are my mid-round favorites. Mathis may have pushed himself into the 2nd which could be to high for us to skip other higher needs. Just my 10 cents -
Aaron Brooks is paid 3.25 in 2004 and 5.5 in 2005. Not sure if he has any bonus money on top of that. David Carr was paid 600K in 2004 and 5.5 mill in 2005. he has amortized bonus of 1.8 per year. So he would have made 2.4 in 2004 and 7.3 in 2005. You want to say that NO is stupid for paying Brooks that much and getting that little, you probably should. Most people wouldnt consider Carr anyhting less than a very good young QB and being so youngt with so much upside, they definetely could justify paying him the coin. Interesting part is, Drew makes more, in 2004 at least, and has a lower passers rating than BOTH.

This was the first of many tests to come. In the last few weeks we have been discussing what JP has to do, to be doing things the RIGHT way. We all felt that it was imperative that he get in Buffalo as soon as possible and get to work. So, he passed his first test. I think this is a great sign that the guys "attitude" is in the right place. That he takes this very very serious and wants to win early and often. The other nice move was for the Bills to show him that they support him fully early if they have any intention of starting him at all next season. Eli suffered from getting thrown to the dogs. If your young QB gets every single snap with the first team it will only help speed up his "jelling" with the supporting cast on the O. The line need sto know what he can and cant do, how much time he needs, etc...The WR's need to know where he will bethrowing it, get their timing in sync with him, etc... So far, JP has been given everything he needs to be successfull as early as possible. He just returned the favor and showed the Bills he has the right attitude by getting to work. So far so great (I think better than good) Theres lots more to come as far as key moments in this thing. For one, the Bills need to further bolster their o-line. A young rattled QB= mistakes. The better the Bills o-line the more time he will have to think and the better he will play. As his confidence and experience grows, the need for a great line will diminish. Not to say we should start to ignore it, only that it can be a HUGE difference maker in speeding along JP's learning curve and in the Bills having success early. So, this offseason is pretty damn important. We need to lock up a few very good o-line folks. LT, whether Jennings or an upgrade is the most critical. We must protect JP's blindside to build his confidence and help his decision making by giving him time. We absolutely need to get a good/great LG. The next important thing to watch is training camp and pre-season. He needs to translate what he learns from the tapes to what he does on the field. Anyways, this was a very important first step both from the Bills showing they support him, and from JP showing hes taking this job very seriously. Great news.

no GM in the world can justify 6.5mill in cap cash for no playoffs, no SB, and simply a winning season. We are in this for the SB not for simply winning more than we lose. JP may or may not b e better than Drew, we dont know, what we do know is that Drew will be about the same as last year or a little worse. That isnt good enough to get us to the SB obviously.

Yeah, what a piece of crap he is. Cant we just go back to guys that spend the whole off-season fly fishing in The midwest?

Here is an excerpt from sports page on yahoo: Look at the franchise figures for 2004 and you’ll notice two things. One, MATT HASSELBECK WOULD COST AT LEAST $10 MILLION AS A FRANCHISE PLAYER. That would be “capicide”, putting Hasselbeck in the Peyton Manning stratosphere and tilting the financial balance in an irretrievable fashion. Running backs in 2004 were only around $5 million, so even if that figure goes up to $5.5 or $6.0 million for 2005...given the value of tagging a guy at that price who ran for almost 1700 yards and scored 20 touchdowns, Shaun Alexander is looking like a pretty safe bet to get the slap. Walter Jones would get a 20% raise if he were franchised, so that would be $8.2 million. They might tag Jones again, but they’d then lose leverage with Alexander, who at the very least would get some serious trade value. The team certainly does not underestimate Jones’ value, but Jones’ (and his agent’s) history of inability to sign a long-term deal, the team’s own constraints and some level of option anxiety may lead them in a different direction. This could be the year that the Bills land a all-pro LT!!!!

No frikkin kidding. I really cant say I like to many of them. Steve, Gumble, Al Michaels are OK. Dingledorf is the worst of all.

GHEEZ, talk about ridiculous. Cross that guy off our list of possiblilities. Ohh well. Rams | Pace to be Franchise Tagged - from www.KFFL.com Fri, 11 Feb 2005 14:24:44 -0800 ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the St. Louis Rams have informed OT Orlando Pace that he will be tagged as their "franchise" player for the third consecutive season. Pace is still in the process of searching for a new agent after firing Carl Poston during the 2004 season. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.

No, your wrong, Losman is EXACTLY like Kyle Boller, and also EXACTLY like Rothlisberger. We have never seen him start but he is EXACTLY like them. The beauty is Drew is EXACTLY like Drew. -
back on a fun topic, who is the dumbest sportscaster to you? I listened to Chris Collinsworth and was floored at the blatantly obvious observations. Do they pay people to runa round saying the sky is blue?

LOL. That hillarious. Right, if the Titanic never hit an iceberg it would still be afloat.

Got it, a fish fry in Buffalo...not a Buffalo fish fry. Round here, they serve it with Mac and cheese every Fry-day. I like my fish broiled rather than fried. But the Mac and Cheese, ahh Too Die For.
-
I have never heard of this. Is this fish fried and then coated in Buffalo wing sauce?

send no response, send no response at all! Dead horse beaters are simply not authorized a response. -
Sorry, Im simply not allowed to comment, Todd is out there....somewhere.

I like everything you say here. Im a big fan of grabbing youth as well as talent. So that rules out a few guys, if you embrace the "rule" so to speak. Rivera, Jones, and Mayberry all fall down a bit from age. Now Ben Hamilton and Anderson are intriguing. Pace, well, he is Pace. I like Raiola the best of the C's. Just my 2 cents.

Dude, seriously? I mean, seriously? Every comment about Drew is a crusade? Was the comment about Drew or why Moulds had some dropsies. Like it or not, Drew's name will come up in other topics. Let me make it clear to you, I have already made every comment on the Drew vs. JP topic that Im going to make. If Drew's name is thrown around by me, it will be because he is a tangible part of the discussion, not because Im trying to convince someone that Drew needs to go. Been there, said that. Im not sure whether Im on the crusade against Drew or if your on the crusade against Drew related posts. Both are just as bad!

If this drives you nuts, I would suggest reading truly published articles where they pay editors to fix the english. I try to type fast, lazy I guess. But franks my dear, I dont give a sh_t. I refuse to put the effort into spellchecking everything I write. If this drives you nuts, this aint the place for you.

Never looked at it that way and your probably right. Moulds however, cant beat the best cover corners deep like Evans can. You know, it really doesnt matter anyways. We have BOTH and getthe benefits of each.

Agreed, I we looking at it like we could land studs for BOTH positions. 12mill is BEFORE cutting Prioleau, trading Travis, or any action with Drew. Even so, 12 mill should get the job done. Why cant it be both? -
Ive become a huge gardener. We have some really great looking bleeding hearts, roses, dogwood, and mock-orange.

90% agreement, Im still on the fence (not the closet) on whether he is the best WR. Agree on everything else.
