NHL to have a salary cap, what will happen?
JP-era replied to JP-era's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Has to be revenue sharing. Now, the situation with cap often looks such that players cant demand the contracts the once could, players must take less because no one could field an whole team and afford to pay these guys that much. For the Sabres, that may mean we get additional funds from revenue sharing and then get studs at cheap prices. Lets hope it works that way. -
Or the system is broke!!! Right now there is a handfull of teams that can pay players top dollar because they think they are worth it. With a salary cap, these teams will get a padlock on their wallets when they reach the cap. That logically means that some of the leagues best players wont be able to sign with those hadnfull of teams. So, they then have to go elsewhere. Heres the problem, if the leagues other teams cant afford to even get to the cap as far as salaries, these top flight players will end up taking a pay cut or being out of a job. Do they have a right to complain? yes they do. In the NFL, each and every team can afford to reach the cap. So, players can move from team to team and find work. Any player can find work somewhere. The NHL and NFL are reported to be different because some NHL teams cant afford 45mill in salary. Now, in the NFL, parity exists. Each year there is a new influx of teams that are competing for the SB. An despite what that idiot Madden says, we do still have dynasties (see the Pats). Parity does not exist in the MLB or the NHL at this point. But, cap system only wokrs if each team can spend all of their cap. Both the MLB and NHL have teams that cant reach a proposed cap. So, what happens? Im worried that lower market teams will not reach the proposed cap and then wont be able to sign some of the leagues best, the NFL doesnt have that problem, every team has a shot to sign some of the best players and then the teams are equal in talent level. In the NHL, if the teams cant afford them the top players will either take a pay cut or be out of work, that waters down the talent (if out of work) which kills parity. On the flip side, if these players take a pay cut, the teams that can afford them without a cap get screwed and can argue that it isnt fair. Either way it isnt fair to someone. The only answer is to have ALL teams have enough cash to reach the cap. Does revenue sharing do this? maybe, if so cap + revenue sharing = parity and everyones happy. But if some teams cant reach the cap the system is screwed. I hope the owners do their math and think this through. I want nothing more than to see a cap and an equal playing field, but equal talent across the league means equal cash to spend each year.

Franchise tag, do you need 2 1st's from
JP-era replied to JP-era's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It was meant to be sacrastic considering I asked a specific question, you provided no answer to the question and then called the post stupid. Id still like an answer to the question from someone and I hope this time I can get an answer and maybe we can save the sarcastic crap thats meant for Yahoo boards. -
Here ya go: 2004 Scouting Report - Football Scouts Inc. Name: L.J. Shelton Position: Offensive Tackle Grade: 69 | Key Alert: None Comment: Shelton is a good athlete for his size, he has tremendous upper body strength, he shows a good initial punch, he extends his arms, and when he is locked onto a defender, he can be very effective. At left tackle, he does not have what you are looking for athletically but he can be effective if he can get his hands on the defender, lock on with his long arms, and simply ride the speed rusher past the pocket. However, if you put him on an island and ask him to be an athlete and to handle double moves or great first-step quickness, he is going to be in big trouble as he is simply not very good in space. Because of his size, Shelton can dominate at the point of attack. Will push the pile in the running game, comes off the ball hard and can simply overpower DL to get the job done. He needs to continue to improve his footwork, but he has a good work ethic and will certainly give you good effort. Shelton has been somewhat of a disappointment thus far but he is still young enough to salvage a nice career if he's eventually moved inside to guard. I guess the write up, which to be fair was 2004 pre-training camp info, raises a red flag to m e. Jennings was rated WAY higher than Shelton by them. Take it for what its worth. I would not mind tagging ro signing Jennings as a LT and moving this guy to LG. Especially since they mention him at guard.

From the CBA: (i) A one year NFL Player Contract for the average of the five largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position at which the Franchise Player played the most games during the prior League Year, or 120% of his Prior Year Salary Since he started at LT last year he MUST be tagged as an LT.

Thanks? -
Could the Bills go this route by trading a 2006, and 2007 1st rounder for someone or do the 1st rounders have to be in the current year? both of them? I think the CBA is a bit flawed here because teams just wont pony up this much for any player. I think they should drop it to say 1 1st and 2 2nd's or something that opens the window up a bit more to trading.

agree, could have been from left field and just a "pat answer" type guess, seems familiar around here huhh? I think for 2.25 mill next year Teague is actually a bargain considering what it would cost to replace him.
-
Agreed on Turley but man what a nasty streak and certainly has the size and footspeed for the LT spot.
-
Clumpys numbers are flawed BillsDaily has the correct figures. Theres enough money to address LT, LG, and TE
-
Scouts Inc. (ESPN Insider reports that the Bills want to upgrade the position from free agency or the draft and that with Teagues salary 1.25 with another 1 at training camps start, he will likely not be back. This is the first mention I have seen of Teague being cut. They also report that Kyle Turley may be cut due to the fight with Martz and a 3.6 mill contract. Personally, I dont give 2 craps about his fight with Martz, Martz is a putz. Id love to see Turley in a Bills uni. I think he'd be a great 2nd option at LT if Jennings bolts.

yep, clearly flicked the "football talk" toggle off again. Ohh well, back to the ignore list ya go.

(LAMP)Auto care..How much should it run to replace

I say the parts can be had for 400 labor is tough because it HAS to be done by a repair shop. It may set you back between 6 and 800.00 with labor. -
Tape of one of JP Losman's games at Tulane!!
JP-era replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I got a paypal account can we make a deal? Id love to land one of his game tapes. -
IM suprised that I took you off ignore and am actually responding to this, I guess it does have enough football talk to merit a response. The point is and was that contracts are often restructured toward the ends of the contracts so that they never get ridiculous. Butler would have signed a guy like W Jones to a 5 year 60 million contract with a 20 million signing bonus and then set it up so that the money is paid out evenly over each year. TD isnt that guy, has plenty of savvy and the assumption that we couldnt have afforded Jones a top notch LG, and one of the better TE's is ridiculous. Every single post that says hey lets get this stdu always has at least one clown who makes some comment like, we could never afford him. W Jones has a 3.98 cap hit in 2005 under his new deal, nuff said.
-
He will count $3.98 million against the team's 2005 salary cap. I wish we all could stop being so conservative and making comments like no way we can sign ____ player he will cost more than we have. Its an ignorrant statement, ignorrant meaning uninformed, not stupid. The Walter Jones contract could EASILY have been absorbed by us and we would have had plenty of money to sign all the other guys we target. Its foolish to try to convince anyone that we cant afford whomever. We just dont know enough about contracts and the cap to make those statements.
-
Sorry, has to be said. The media always goes ultra-conservative. They are slow to see guys who are becoming good and slow to grow sour on guys who are on their way down. They loved Kurt Warner and yet he lost his starting job for good reason and went elsewhere and didnt play like the all-star that they labeled him as. The media is about the last people to learn about how a player is doing. Its completely expected that they would be backing Drew, many of them are athletes just like Drew who have an overbloated opinion of their talent and tend to favor vets over young guys. The league tends to be what have you dont for me lately and the media is all about what you did in the past. as far as fans here go, too many were willing to simply try to limp into the playoffs and try to win every playoff game on the road. Good freekin lcuk. Too many simply said "forget it" when trying to find a way to beat NE and win the division. Thank god that TD and Co. saw past that and realized that we must build a team that can beat NE and if we dont our chances to go to the SB are pretty damn slim. So, TD and MM have the joib of evaltuating where we are today as far as talent and where we need to be. The media and fans dont have to do that. TD and Co. went to the tapes and made the right call, we ARE NOT good enough on O and we cant beat NE or do well in the playoffs if we dont get better. That meant changes. One guy who seems to most often have trouble with NE was Drew. Our road through NE did not include Drew (he had already proved that he couldnt get it done against them). The media and fans here dont grasp this and wont until we get over the hump and start having at least a 50/50 chance against them. Anyways, TD and Co did the right thing, they are lloking forward, being honest about their limitations and trying to improve. The media and some Drew supporters wanted status quo and that would NEVER get us to the promise land.

Franks is by no means a done deal and yes I want Pat back but he may walk and Hovan is a sleeper and would be great next to Adams.

TD's comments on not being good enough on O
JP-era replied to JP-era's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It can be done especially if your talking abotu a guy with talent who has played for crappy teams. Travis Taylor or Kevin Johnson are 2 such players. Id love to add Johnson who has hands like flypaper. -
TD's comments on not being good enough on O
JP-era replied to JP-era's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Back at ya, How did Pitt keep Randle El, Ward and Burress for as long as they did? -
Hows that for a good start to FA. Wahle might very well be cut, Franks is thinking he is as good as gone because theres been no talk, and Hovan had a poor season last year so he cant command big money. But we gotta get that LT spot fixed. If Jennings wont re-sign here and we cant land LJ Shelton, I say move big Mike over and sign a RT like Womack or McKenzie.
-
Thats one word, other words say that their letting him walk
-
Not in the minority at all. I agree fully! Franks may just be the best BLOCKING TE in FA and is a hell of a catcher in his own right.
-
This is REALLY want I want to hear. Id love to hear his first comments in the face of controversy. I hope he proves the nay sayers wrong and takes the high road.
-
Ummm, yeah I think so. Id prefer a pick and to spend our cash on Fransk instead but I do like McMichael and maybe we end up better off with a player instead of a pick.
