  1. The Free lunch and breakfast program is a federally funded program..for many kids, these are the best meals the will get during the week. snow days mean plenty of kids in lower-income school districts go hungry that day.
  2. energy in 5 years will be extremely cheap and plentiful, maybe not oil based fuel, but energy will be cheap as well
  3. all good points, and am not sure of the answer. As the WAPO article noted, first generation and many minority students face challenges in college that others do not..and some are addressing those issues with innovative programs. But you are correct, when you start out behind academically, it can be a tough row to hoe to get get caught uo.
  4. I had to look this up, but this is not even close to applicable. IThis is more akin to saying in a year, we are going to have a golf match to see who the better golfer is. between two kids .One kid gets to train and practice every day for a year with a top-flight swing coach, a sports psychiatrist, and the best clubs money can buy, and oh BTW has two parents who grew up with golf. The other kid gets to practice once a week on a driving range with 30-year-old clubs with Levi as his instructor, and whos Mom has never watched one hole of golf in her life....wonder who statistically has a better chance to win that match.
  5. because many a standardized test are a reflection of the education you have received to date, and not necessarily indicative of your capability to learn and the grades you may be able to achieve. My kids got every advantage in the world, top-flight prep school, tutors for subjects, tutors specifically for standardized tests, ability to take the test numerous times etc, ability to pay a psychiatrist to certify my sons ADD and apply for accommodations on the test($1,000) Tutors alone gained my daughter 7 points on the ACT( started at 24, ended at 31). Compare that to a kid in a single family home, no experience in the family with college, only decent meals may be at school, 1 shot at taking the test, no tutors, and less than stellar resources at the school to teach the curriculum required on the tests. Do you really think that standardized test reflects the relative ability of both groups?
  6. for those so inclined, lines for week 2-17 https://www.vsin.com/odds/cg-technology-nfl-betting-sheets-for-weeks-2-16/
  7. i have not researched this at all yet, but have been saying for a decade race should not be used for set-asides atc in higher education, income should be. So on the surface, i like this. BTW, I pay for WAPO, but in chrome just go over to the little menu thingee, hit open an incognito window..and voila..no 2 article limit! not sure if you are serious, but a huge indicator typically of a schools performance on standardized tests. More free lunches, lower incomes, more single-parent households, less parent involvement, more likely to not have college-educated parent(s), higher costs per student etc...all lead to lower test scores across the board
  8. Try to see if you can find that Kids are Alright..again its cancelled but i have a feeling you would love it
  9. I have heard this is a good show, just have never watched. Any show with a laugh track is verboten to me. Lots of good shows out there Gal...have you watched Brockmire or Better Things at all? Both on now, both quality I think ..sure one of the streaming services has them from the beginning. I just saw one of the shows i liked this season is canceled, and that was "The Kids are Alright". Funny show bout a big catholic family in the 70's, and man was that show funny and spot on.
  10. The head shot is why I referenced that up thread in terms of replay missed calls. We know damn all majors that are called are now going to be reviewed...but what about ones that are not called? Ban it all, live with the calls...haha, made a rhyme!!!!
  11. i would do away with replay in all sports..hate it. unfortunately, this will not lead to way more in the NHL..including all 5-minute majors. Wonder if they will always include a replay for a major not called? @Dante, man do your boys gut a rabbit foot stuffed up their arse this playoff year
  12. that both took a good whack from the ugly stick?
  13. Well, I certainly plagiarized a chit ton on papers! I was always a good test taker..not so good at homework and papers. True story..Accounting class in college, teacher was truly outstanding. I never missed a class, paid attention like crazy. but.never did a homework assignment. And she assigned homework every class. Homework was 10% of grade. .i got nothing but like 98-100 on the tests...i was good with a B, or maybe even an A if it meant not doing a stitch of homework. But she was insistent i was cheating cause no way could i get those grades and not do homework, so she moved me to the front of the class and right next to her desk for tests and quizzes She finally agreed I was not cheating, was flattered when I told her it was just great teaching.. I am B student at best...I smoked the final and she gave me the A anyway!!!!
  14. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/meet-the-new-howard-stern-hed-like-to-make-amends-for-the-old-howard-stern/2019/05/15/12e297f2-757f-11e9-bd25-c989555e7766_story.html?utm_term=.c5ce4294e7d2 Interesting piece..i am not a stern listener BTW
  15. sure it was a pre-game thing! ( although we did not call it pregaming back then) We had a home kegerator in our apartment last 3 years I was in school( i had two Senior years!), so never any beerballs! $19.99 for a Genny half, and we were close to Pittsburgh.
  16. That article says the started making them in 76, so no Rockpile! Kegs in the Rockpile yes, beerballs no! Like i mentioned upthread, we took them in for at least one year at Rich. Must have been 78....i think by 79 they banned them..and forced us to buy Jumbo's..36oz beers!!!!
  17. i have zero knowledge of the guy..but it does sound innovative and I am all for that
  18. i had to post a smiley,,,,that is what he would want! Great post!
  19. Sorry folks. I am drunk and miserable tonight, so yall get to read or ignore my post, but I get to get ***** off my chest without paying a therapist! This Pancho news hit me hard, not cause he died, shoot we all die. It was the news the night they started him on the morphine drip cause he was agitated and having panic attacks. I have been with both my Mom and my Brother when they get there..and man I can't stop thinking we have to figure out this end of life ***** better. I can still see my Mom, supposedly sedated and waiting to the end, agitated and embarrassed as all get all as I had to clean her.....and, my brother, when he was supposedly "sleeping comfortably" and sedated as fug..getting agitated as fug when the nurses insisted he had a fever and he did not need covers...and I knew he was cold..and he let us know he was cold...and I had to insist we put covers on him i dunno the answers, I am just very sad tonight..and know we need to do a better job at this stuff..sorry
