  1. like i joked, jp losman was in that area when he started 16 games.

tannehill is good. id take him over our guys easy. and several others in the league. but id also have some reservations about whether he would get over that hump and be more productive on a per snap basis.

    Saint....

So would I....but would you take him knowing that you wouldnt be able to afford the pieces of our top 5 defense.....Clay....Harvin....etc etc

  2. This is great news for Buffalo.

    Yup

For the most part Buffalo has OWNED Tannahill......and they just put a huge part of their cap into him.....

I know that we need better QB play but THIS is what happens when you think you have a franchise QB.....u sink resources into that position and cant upgrade in other areas.

  3. almost got into it with one on my way to work last week......

I was at a standstill......put my turn signal on and tried to change lanes as I needed to all the way over soon

I checked my mirror....then started the lane change

all of a sudden i hear screeching tires....I stop my lane change just in time to not hit a lone biker.....who I didnt even see

He almost eats it.....gets huffy and hits my car with his fist.....in stand still traffic......im out of my car making sure he didnt dent it

Before I can walk over to him he is on his bike and taking off again....going about 70 mines an hour in standstill traffic....which why i presume I didnt see him in the first place

  4. I think you skewed a bit towards "it's close so I'm going with our guy" too consistently for my own taste, but that's just me. I guess it doesn't help that we don't really have some defined parameters (whether we are considering contract or just skill, 2014 only or long term, etc.... Do we put the #1 pick ahead of tyrod or simply say both are unproven?)

I don't like dalton but I think that's best case for cassell, for instance. Is it possible dalton plays a little down and mc is at his best? Sure. And mc is cheaper which is good. But skill alone I think we'd all feel a little better with dalton- as an example where you and a went different ways and you end up in the teens and I'm in the 20s for ranking.

You are correct......if its close in the evaluation I do put our qbs ahead of other average qbs........I do this because the bills were smart enough to biuld their teams AROUND the qbs.......

The weapons are better........there fore I expect for our QBs to also play better then other average qbs. For instance.....Dalton plays better when he has green in the lineup.......and his play falls off quite a bit with him out of it

I expect our middling qbs to play better because we have a crackerjack of a offensive line up around them.....Watkins, Woods, Harvin, Clay, Shady.........this is a matchup nightmare for other teams...and all that middling qb has to do is throw a accurate pass and hand the ball off.

Our D is where our money has been put......which should just keep handing the ball back to the qb time and time again.

  5. In our division you can say Brady is set and tannehill has atleast moved along the curve further than the rest leaving him #2. I'd put fitz over cassel but probably two of the lower end spots in the league.

Big Ben, flacco, dalton, McCown.... 3/4 better than us. McCown seemed to be our choice over cassel too but I wasn't a fan. Dalton isn't great but he's what we hope for out of our guys at this point I think.

Rivers, smith, manning and Carr. 3/4 better again and Carr is a debate. Many here take him but I think he's similar to ej at the moment.

Luck, mariota, bottles and hoyer.... Lucks clearly better, two young guys that were top 5 picks but question marks. I don't like hoyer. I'd say 3/4 are ahead as we'd trade Meh and EJ for a shot at either young guys potential but it's the toughest group

Eli, romo, Bradford, and... Rg3? Eli and romo are better. I like Bradford more than MC but could tolerate the health debate bringing him down. On the flip side of the same coin I don't love rg3 but could put up with and argument that he could have that flash in him still

Brees, cam, Matt Ryan, jameis.... Not a good lineup for us to compete with

Wilson, CK, Carson Palmer and foles-- Wilson obviously is better. I'd take Palmer over cassell every day, even if he's up there in age. CK while risky would be the guy at the top of our depth chart with it being his job to lose. Foles was never my favorite- he'd be right in this mess with our guys and I could hear arguments both ways

Rodgers, stafford, teddy b and cutler.... 2 clearly better. We traded for the backup to teddy to potentially start. Cutler would be a fair debate. Probably more skilled than our lineup but that contract makes him unpalatable

So pretty much every division 3 out of 4 are better leaving us as a bottom quarter qb situation with a roster built to win now? Whether Whaley is panicking, worrying, frustrated or some other word I think it's fair to say he's praying a bit that one of our guys reaches their potential

    Thank you Saint

Big Ben, flacco, dalton, McCown. I think it is debatable that Dalton and McNown are better then what we have....when Dalton doesnt have his top WR he looks REALLY average......McCown I def think we can debate whether he is better then our QBs. So...basically.....half the teams have better QBs.

Rivers, smith, manning and Carr. I think most of these teams are in better positions BUT......Manning is aging....and Rivers situation is in turmoil

Luck, mariota, bottles and hoyer......the only QB in this group that is def better is Luck

Eli, romo, Bradford, and... Rg3.....three of these QBs are severe injury issues....you cant be better if your not on the field

Brees, cam, Matt Ryan, jameis....agreed...3 of those QBs are in better situations....Winston is a complete unknown.

Wilson, CK, Carson Palmer and foles.....Wilson yes....the rest? CK not in a good situation and frankly not a good QB.....Palmer is injury prone and old....I dont think Foles is any better then what we have

Rodgers, stafford, teddy b and cutler.. 2 are clearly better.....Teddy B. is unknown.....cutler is unwanted

So this puts us maybe in the bottom HALF of teams. Not last in the league or anywhere close to it. I say again.....it is NOT panic time for the bills......they just dont have it figured out all the way yet.

  6. How many teams with a roster as strong as the Bills? The clock is ticking because this team has so far been built backwards. Strong defense, strong offensive specialists, QB below average, line unknown.

You know this how? You don't, just like folks don't know how EJ will turn out.

    Well put.

    Why?

This is not meant as a dig at the poster.......only to point out that there are a certain group of teams that have bonafied franchise QBs and the rest of them (including us) are continuing to look for the qb answer........so why is SI pointing out that WE are in panic mode.

Not meant to create a arguement......just something to discuss

  7. No one is suggesting that.

The point being made is that our QB situation is in panic mode or at least not looking good. It's actually worst in the league, or close to it.

You are pointing out that there really aren't any better alternatives than what we have at the moment.

I agree with that. Doesn't mean we aren't still in panic mode or that our situation isn't any better than it is.

We're about to find out how far a team with a great defense and skill players all over the field, except at the QB position, can go.

    It'll be an interesting experiment.

    OK Ill bite

As a bit of experiment could you provide the starting QBs for the NFL teams around the league and we can discuss it?

  8. Are you sure about that? Since the Bills acquired Cassel (who I admit, I had seen little of since his big year with the Pats, all those years ago), I have heard 3 analysts (for what it is worth) state that Cassel was an upgrade to Orton, a substantial one. I don't hate Orton as much as some did, but he was fairly erratic last season, the longer he played. The only edge he had over EJ was the willingness to throw the ball, even when he probably should have thought twice.

John, all due respect, while EJ has possibly never played as bad as Genos worse, he has never elevated his game like Geno did from time to time...and Dave McBride is correct, Geno played pretty well the last month of last season, or so. He throws a much more accurate and catchable long-ball than EJ too. He hasn't been afraid to throw certain passes that EJ has seemed tentative on...hopefully new coaching will change some of that.

I am an EJ guy, and I would argue that the Jets sticking with Geno, even through the ugliness, may prove to have been a wise thing for the former coach...he did improve, and started to get some consistency...

Can we wait to see if coaching was ruining EJ before we start saying he isnt willing to throw the ball?

The honest truth is I dont know....I do know that EJ knew one truth that will be true till the end of time......

The team that turns the ball over usually loses the game

  9. John: look at Smith's performance over the last four games of 2014. Seriously. He played well.

As for the claims here about no one reading SI, that's laughable. Mmqb is quite possibly the best and most widely read football dedicated site on the web, and it's an SI site.

You mean when the pressure was completely off him and the team was completely out of the playoff race?

Lets keep in mind here that by time this was happening

    - Orton had started really not playing well

    - The coaches refused to put EJ back in to see what they had. I agreed with the benching at the time but when Orton started struggling I really thought it was time to get more evaluation on EJ for the folling year

So you could not get a side by side comparison of EJ and Gino at the end of the season.....EJ was holding a clipboard.

This does not mean that I want EJ as the starter this season.....only that one QB was allowed to play and one was not.

  10. Perhaps if they had not gone to the extreme of "panic mode" maybe I could take them more seriously.....

    Panic Mode?

    - Is it unsettled? For sure.

    - Last year we ran with NOTHING but inexperienced QBs until we brought in Orgon.......we now have 2 veteran QBs and a qb we drafted in his 3rd year.

    - The team saw that they did not have the QB position settled so they did what they could...they biult AROUND the QB position

And by the way.....if we are in panic mode then half the teams in the league are in panic mode right along with us

And no...I dont agree with the QB comparisons.......

Fitzy IS Cassel.......they are basically middling QBs that have had varying levels of success and did ok when the teams around them were strong...the problem with Fitz is when the heat is up.....that is when he is at his worst

    and

ANYONE that would say Gino is better then EJ Manuel is a dufas....talk to me when Gino isnt a interception machine

  11. Is there a single fan base in the league that is happy with the play calling? Seems like fans from every team have a problem with the play calling or lack of adjustments.

From all I've watched of the 49ers' offense, I don't recall saying how poorly the game was called. Then again, I wasn't emotionally invested to it.

Ive heard people complaining....of course they were not complaining about all those playoff runs

  12. Key is Goodwin. He's the only one can really stretch the field. Healthy Goodwin would make us a nightmare to defend

    JTSP

    First off....love the avitar

Second....WHAT....This team is loaded with speed...Goodwin is NOT the only WR that can stretch the field......

Watkins and Harvin are really really explosive....EITHER of them are field stretchers....Woods is the most pedestrian of the group

  13. Oh wow, some of the posts in this thread are ridiculous. Look, I absolutely love FJax & everything he has done for this team and the community. He's been a stand up guy, a team leader, & a great all around RB. But there is no way in hell FJax is currently a better RB then LeSean McCoy- that is just insanity. Jackson in his prime a few years back was not better then Shady McCoy.

McCoy is an elite RB (top 3) right now. If you polled all 32 GMs, every single one would choose McCoy. Shady has the most rushing yards of any NFL RB over the past 5 seasons. He is also extremely durable coming off bacK to back 300+ carry seasons.

The last 2 seasons in PHI, McCoy has:

    626 carries / 2926 yards / 4.65 ypc / 14 rushing TD / 80 receptions / 694 rec yards / 2 TD / 26 plays of 20+ yards / 7 plays of 40+ yards

    That is elite production.

Father time has definitely caught up to FJax. He only averaged 3.7 ypc last season. Over the past 2 seasons, he has 12 plays of 20+ yards & a single 40+ yard play. He was never a super explosive runner to begin with and he has slowed down.

I am all for an open competition at every single position on this team; RB included. Let Shady,FJax, Boobie, Bryce Brown, & Karlos Williams battle it out.

McCoy is obviously going to out perform everyone & win the starting job. I think the real battle to watch is FJax, Boobie, Bryce Brown, & Karlos Williams fight for the remaining 2 RB roster spots.

I'm almost positive Bryce Brown is going to be cut/traded. I'm hoping FJax can out play one of Boobie or Karlos and stick around. But if Karlos Williams looks like a stud & Boobie plays well and keeps up his very good special teams play, I wont be outraged if FJAX is odd man out

I just hope Fred understands that his station with the team will not matter if someone like Karlos just flat outplays him in training camp. If Freddie performs like he has in the past....he backs up shady....if not....then you will always have been one of my favorite bills Freddie Jackson.
