  1. OK so let me get this straight......

    - We dont have a "Lebron" at QB? OK fine

    - Since we are using NBA references....and pointing them back to the NFL....how many NBA TEAMS have a Lebron type player? Answer.....a handful

    - Now lets switch back to the NFL where this is the only place that its really relevent.......isnt this like saying The bills dont have a Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, etc etc

    - Now....let me ask..DID WE NOT ALREADY KNOW THIS

    - There are 32 teams in the NFL.....around 5-6 teams have legit franchise QBs.....

HOW HAS THIS CHANGED.....the answer is...IT HAS NOT

  2. This was the one negative that went through my mind when the Bills hired Roman. If the best case scenario happens and he is able to turn this offense around with a purely defensive minded head coach and no real QB to speak of, he'll be gone.

Of course that's not a reason to pass on a good coach, but we'll be back to the drawing board if he gets a head coaching job next year.

    The good news is?

    - We now have a deep pocket owner

    - There is no cap on how much you can pay coaches

  3. Sigh all you want but his absence speaks volumes about character and commitment. Other players are rehabbing from injuries but have been in town and participating to the extent they can. At the very least, meeting new teammates and coaches shows commitment. Whether he spoke to any Bills represnetatives or not is beside the point.

I really dont see it as a big deal.....

If we were counting on him....then I would worry. The X factor here is John Miller......if he is as the bills are advertising them Williams is doing the bills a favor by not being here.......it would take reps away from John Miller.

  4.

There are some good points in there. However, overall, it doesn't impress me much. The big picture why in one sentence: he misuses statistics abominably to make his point, and most of his argument boils down to "he wasn't great in college and he's been a backup 4 years and As he Was, So Shall he Always Be". This is a clearly fallacious argument which could be used to prove that Matt Schaub should still be starting and so should John Elway.

The bottom line is that athletes change, for better or for worse, and pro sports is a game of "what have you done for me lately?"

For those who would like to go under the hood:

Argument #1: Poor QB skillset. "His career completion rate was a paltry 57.2% in the not-so-daunting ACC". True, but one needs to look at the numbers that make up the average. In Taylor's case, his completion percentage went up 6%, his passing yardage tripled, and his TD/INT ratio rose from 1.7 to 4.8. So he clearly was changing (improving) and the question is: where did he level out?

Argument #2: Draft position. Any player drafted in later rounds has a lower probability to a) stick on an NFL roster b) become an NFL starter. The article linked more clearly defines the 60% probability as being that the guy even gets a year on an NFL roster. So there's a 40% chance that a 6th rounder will get 1 year on an NFL roster. Now what are the odds that a guy (on a contending team that signs and drafts other players) gets 4 years on an NFL roster? I bet they shift, and the fact that a guy survives those odds may say something.

The more important point, is: statistics really aren't predictive of an individual's performance. QB drafted in the 1st round have a higher probability of success. But that doesn't mean the guy drafted in the first is a sure-fire winner - only that he has something like a 50% chance of being a long-term NFL starter vs. 20-30% or less in the 2nd through 4th rounds and more like 5% in the 6th or later. Likewise, statistics really don't prove that a guy drafted in the late rounds is a sure-fire loser. Only NFL performance does that.

Argument #3: NFL production thus far. Taylor has significant playing time in ONE GAME. One Stinkin' Game, and a quarter or so in another. To put together a table comparing that one game with Cassel's 10 years in the league and Manuel's 14 games is the act of a guy who simply doesn't understand statistics. You can't meaningfully compare sample sizes that different. It's not appropriate.

Bottom line: is it likely that Taylor will become the starter of our dreams? No, the probabilities are against it and the Bills know it - that's why Cassel and Manuel are also here. But does anything in that article rule it out? No. No it does not. The only thing that rules it in (or out) is how he plays, and that's TBD.

I personally favor exactly what the Bills have done - give EJ a chance, bring in the best vet they could, and bring in their best choice as either a draftee or a 2nd tier FA (guys who have no significant playing time in the NFL but might have promise). We're all crossing our fingers that one of the three pans out, but I think Cassel gives us a "servicable" floor.

This is a really good post

  5.

It's a fact that Fitzpatrick is a much better running QB than Cassel. If you were to mentioned to anyone that you were inserting the read option offense with Fitzpatrick you'd be laughed out of the room.

The reason why guys like Fitzpatrick and Cassel from time to time gain rushing yards is because #1 they aren't afraid to do it now and again and #2 it's something that the defense isn't keying on. They're ok with the occasional 10 yard run by those type of QBs. However, those type of QBs aren't going to last long if the defense starts to key on read options because they can't get out of the way and they're going to get whacked very hard, where athletic QBs have the speed and agility to avoid those kind of "bell ringing" hits.

With the read option, you must have an athletic QB who the defense is forced to respect due to the athleticism and threat to gain huge chunks of yards consistently.

Is there any particular reason why you took what I posted and turned it into something else?

Im not disputing that the ideal QB for a read option is a athletic QB

  6. His contract is fair and makes good sense for both the player and the team. If he emerges as a starter this year or next, he'd deserve a raise the next season. That's what he'd get with the contract. That raise does not need to be defined now. His level of play would dictate that.

I know this is total pipe at this point

but what if Tyrod actually ended up being decent.....the bills sign him to a modest contract due to lack of prior production.

Now you are in Seattle territory of not paying a QB.....continuing to put the money in other positions

You can use your high draft picks next year replacing guys that are going to need to be replaced soon and can be groomed......like OT or DE or DT

  7. So you admit that he did well in Miami and is seemingly in the perfect offense for his skill set (see Delanie Walker) and you are expecting him to get worse?

No one is suggesting that you have to like a particular player. It is ludicrous to think that he will not be on the field at all times. His versatility is essential in today's NFL. There is so much prep work done now because of technology that you have to be able to disguise what you are going to do. That's why guys like Lee Smith are so useless. Clay is in line for a big year IMO but even if he doesn't have a big year it doesn't change the fact that he is the ideal fit for this team.

Yeah 34 im sorry but I cant share your view

This team went hard after Clay because fits what Roman wants to do perfectly......he was a top 100 NFL player in 2014......just dont understand your view but I respect your right to have it

I think that Lewis gets cut. These guys are going to use Goodwin it sounds like. He is extremely valuable to a team that wants to run the ball. He keeps guys out of the box. MG is never healthy or he would not even be on the bubble IMO.

    Pretty much my thoughts

You know whats interesting is with all the players being kept at other positions it might be hard for ALL these players to make the team.

The draft pick might go to practice squad......Roman likes his tight ends.......

  8. Small auto claim last year. Paid $500 to get car fixed and now Progressive recovered it from the old lady.

Im not broke at all, but not rich either.

All my bills are paid and I only have $360 in total credit card debt. Really just cause I bought a laptop last week from Dell.

This is like finding $500 since Progressive told me that the old lady would most likely not pay for the damage, even in collections...

Now someone might say, pay the laptop and you still have $140 to take your kids out to a nice dinner. BORING BORING BORING

    Any other NON BORING suggestions?

Ps. As the loveable husband that I am I tell my wife EVERYTHING. Except I didnt tell her this. Not yet anyway. I'll tell her later this week.

Take it to the casino and blow it on the "Walking Dead" slot machine

  9. The untalked about elephant in the room

It is sooooo hard to find a NFL franchise QB

    - Most drafted dont work out

    - Teams that have one do NOT trade them

So what do you do.......to me this falls under the "leave no stone unturned" thing

    - Was the most successfull QB coming out of that school since Michael Vick (and say what you want about Michael Vick the player....there WAS a time in the NFL when he was a hot commodity)

    - Was a winner in college

    - The athletic measurables (besides height) are off the chart

The thing we dont know.......with only 40 NFL passes......can he actually play QB?

All I want is a QB that will not turn the ball over......move the chains for that first down where it by his arm or his feet.......not get hurt......and make the RIGHT decision when he has NFL defenders bearing down on him.

Who knows.....maybe the kid has the unexplained....unobtainable....."IT FACTOR" to him

  10.

Matt Cassel replies, “Why would he do that?”

Lets not act like Cassel is Orton here....Matt does have some mobility

Coaching matters. They also had Levitre with Chan, and most of the same players in 2013 and they weren't bad and Glenn had a great year.

Last year you saw Glenn and Wood regress. The Chris Williams debacle began. Pears, easily the 2ND weakest point on the line, got shoved inside to guard in place of the serviceable Urbik. Three rookies with excellent reviews for physical talents (Cyrus was considered a late first, Henderson was called first round talent with a 10 cent head) failed to develop.

And some point, coaching had an effect rather than talent evaluation.

I know that people like to beat this drum a lot....but I would encourage people to go back and look at the 3 games Chris Willams managed to play...he was NOT as bad ad is being advertised right up till he was out on IR with the back

Im not saying he is back or even that he SHOULD be back.....I think we are good at OG....just that the OL started deteriorating quickly AFTER Chris Williams went on IR
