  1. This is a big reason why I'm very cautious in my optimism for this season.

I think its important to note that there are differences between that team and this one.

They were 2nd in the league in rushing but take a look at how many times they had to do that in order to get to that 2nd position. And red zone offense was horrible that year.

  2. First, that article is an absolute pain in the butt. It kept knocking my i-pad off, and so on. With that rant, I don't disagree with some of his points. O'Leary is short for a TE, although athletic, but I prefer Grey over Gragg. Regarding Darby, I wondered why we would use our first pick on defense when we already had a decent secondary, and Darby does get caught out of position.

Kelly....could you give some examples of Darby getting "caught out of position"

I know that he showed a propensity in college to not come up with interceptions that he should have had.....but as far as a cover corner I would really love to hear your explanation on this.

    and

If you look at it from a "Why did Rex Ryan get canned prospective" The weakness of Rex Ryan's D with the Jets was bad corner.......

    - Your only as good as your worst corner when teams start spreading you out to try to create mismatches with their receivers......

    - Graham was getting moved to safety

    - McKelvin is probably gone after this season

When you think about it.....all it would take is one injury to the secondary to put a chink in the Rex Ryan D........now teams can literally go 5 wide and we can match up.

Then the next round they took Miller......which looks like a good pick

  3.

Look, I am happy we traded up to take Sammy--said so when we did. I just don't need to make him something he isn't yet and may not be--he may not even be the best WR drafted in 2014. He's one of a bunch of guys who are hopeful young WR talents to enter the league the past few years. Be happy with that--no need to go overboard to feel better.

And going back to his freshman year to claim he's a once in a generation ("generational") talent is a silly stretch to make your point. Come on!

I will do whatever I want to make myself feel better about being a bills fan!

    :)

  4. I just wonder if he had any say in NY at QB. A game manager type seems to be the perfect fit for Rex, obviously excluding franchise QBs. But all he has played at QB are young raw turnover machines and Vick for a few games.

A huge point and thank you for bringing it up......

I feel like Rex was such a lame duck coach in recent years with the Jets.......you got a real dose of what was on his mind when they did that interview with him and Jim and THurman at that table together at that popular bills place

You wonder whether or not Rex had ANY say on some of these decisions.....how does a HC operate like a HC if management has taken away his power?

Its a fresh start in Buffalo....you def get the sense that every coach here is a "Rex guy" and not just rex guys but Pegula insuring that these were Rex Ryans top coaches.....and assistant coaches....and positional coaches

I feel like the bills really set Rex up for success

  5. I thought we had accepted that already?

pretty decent arguer though consistent. does not lose his temper or show emotion.

I think he a contrary man and valuable to the group.

May i offer you a pinch of salt for Weos blend of tea?

its like the Monty Python skit in some ways.

" I would like to have an argument "

    "No you wouldn't".

    http://www.montypython.net/scripts/argument.php

seems to be a trend. actually

I am not doubting WEO's ability to debate........he is def pretty good at it. Just frustrating that its always the alternate view no matter when even when it makes little sense to be. Its frustrating sometimes why does he even follow this team if he hates it so much? THat is a serious question.

As for QB......We cannot afford a great veteran QB with the contracts that need to be given out to keep our D great.....and our team is widely regarded as "one fo the most talented in the league"

I wonder if this next year if the bills dont get VERY aggressive in drafting that next QB....giving up multiple picks to do so.

  6. Not completely, I did say defensive coach, not head coach.

That being said he is probably the best HC we have had since our super bowl years (actually....I was a big fan of Wade Phillips to)

It will be interesting to see if Rex second go around he learns to leave the Offensive decisons to the high profile offensive coach he has brought in.......if he does that skies the limit here

  7.

Sorry, I misquoted him-but I'm pretty sure I knew what he meant--"generational" means once in a generation, when in reality, there have been a bunch of solid, equally talented WRs coming out of college in the last few years alone.

Anyway, Sammy's not a "generational talent" either. If he is, then that term has lost its meaning.

He was a great college player, talented, who may or may not be a great pro.

I do wonder if your sole purpose on this board is to try and piss on any positive thing posted by anyone.

    Seriously

If someone thinks a player might actually be good.....you find a way to say they might not be.

  8. I'm not worried about having a bad defense. I'm questioning whether the results will be better than last year's, which was damn good at #4. I'm wondering if maybe the D-line is better suited to Schwartz's system than Ryan's? That doesn't mean they will be bad, I'm wondering if they will give up more points per game under Ryan's scheme?

Granted, focusing on points is a narrow measure, and you can't tell how many points should really be on the O. For some reason the Jets have not ranked well in points allowed for the past 4 years--24, 19, 21, and 20, They were ranked #1 in yards and points allowed in 2009, then 1 in yards and 6 in points in 2010. Maybe the explanation is their offense was so bad? I think someone attributed to the decline in their run game.

Regardless, I think the Schwartz scheme is more of bend and don't break, it's a more conservative D, and his results were the best in years. I think Ryan's is more high risk, subject to giving up big plays if someone fails a responsibility. The Bills will be a top 10 D. The question is will they be better than 4th?

WIll they also create more turnovers?

Will we score points on D? Something we didnt do a lot of in minimal risk Schwartz defenses?

Rex is not known for having bad run Ds

Lets just say for arguments sake at the bills D did drop from 4......which is outstanding......to....say.....6

And the O went UP from however bad it was last year to say........15th

Would that not be a acceptable trade off....the point being that you would not even notice a D dropping a couple of spots if the O was significantly improved.

Winning is what is most important

  9. To me Sammy doesnt get the press that he should be doing.......its interesting that it is turning out that way......more press going to Shady, Harvin, the O Line

Sammy Watkins is a special player......even in a year that was loaded with one injury after another without a good qb to throw to him he still had a great season

They ran virtually NOTHING that he did great in college....yet he still showed that he was nearly uncoverable

  10.

If we were much better against the run in 2013, I still don't see a winning record then. As for this year, it's not clear how far a run first offense will take them, no matter who is now on the roster.

I know that its hard to remember the overall live action of things from year to year but.....

The 2013 bills defense was fun to watch because Pettine brought the farm......a LOT.......but it was done at the expense of big plays when the house didnt get there......and we CONSISTANTLY gave up crucial 1st downs on the ground because of the "get to the QB at all costs" Pettine defense

Rex Ryans defenses are not like that......they are consistantly ranked high against the run to go along with exotic pass rush schemes.

    This does make a difference

Had last years team been effective AT ALL on offense we would have had a much better record then 9 and 7.....I truly believe that.

    Be that as it may

The defense is the constant on our team....we KNOW they are gonna be good...with Rex Ryan's mind at the helm they might even be great....BUT this team will only go as far as its offense takes it PAST a 9 and 7 type record

We MUST convert 1st downs on the ground in this scheme

We MUST score touchdowns instead of field goals

We MUST score in the red zone....be it run or pass

Now.....the arrow is pointing up here regardless of QB

    - Sammy Watkins....a GENERATIONAL talent.....the bill is paid on this receiver (meaning compensation) and he is now in his 2nd year.......I expect this guy go have a big year REGARDLESS of whether we are biult to run the ball.....he is simply too good.......AJ Green good

    - The running back stable IS improved.....there is no other way around this.....when Fred Jackson has been relegated to a limited carry role because we have a running back that is so good he has been forced there....u KNOW that you have improved the positon

    - We have not had a TE of Clay's quality for years and years

    - Wood also should continue to improve....and is completely being looked over right now

    - The interior of the OL has been upgraded

Now.....all they have to do is prove it on the field.....not an easy task.....but hey. We are bills fans......so we are used to wait and see.

They took a small step last year...I think they continue to do that.

  11. Doesn't mean we have to like them. I agree with Kzoo - without his play to compensate for it all we are left with his is dour personality. Perhaps if I knew him personally I'd feel differently but going off the persona he puts out there for us to consume, Shady is a douchebag. I'll root for the guy 'cause he's a Bill but that's the only reason.

All that being said I also agree with a poster upstream that this post is about a week too late.

These players are not your friends....that is just the way it is....they are here to play a sport for a team that we love

Produce on the field and stay out of trouble....is shady doing. This

  12. I have no idea why most Bills fans think John Miller (a player with a 3-5th round draft grade) is the second coming of Evan Mathis? Take away reps from a 3rd rounder  really? A guy who may not even see the field like the 2nd rounder last year, or even see the field and prove he isn't very good like the fifth rounder from last years draft.

Actually Miller is probably not the second coming of Mathis......Mathis is a zone blocking OG which isnt what the bills are doing anyway. Miller is all about power and you can see it both in his film and his build. Rex, Roman, and Kromer like him and thats good enough for me at this point. You either trust the coaching staff that has been brought in or you dont. and they LOVE Miller.

I just don't get why some fans think a Bills 3rd round pick is going to step on the field and instantly become one of the most dominate players at his position. In fact show me one third round draft pick the Buffalo Bills have made in the last ten years, or even under the current GM that have made the impact of a top starting player... much less an all pro.

Because with O linemen it DOES happen....a LOT.....and lets keep in mind that Mathis HAS been an very good player.....on a different team....and is pretty long in the tooth. If we signed him he would be the SECOND OLDEST player on the team....do you really want to give a big contract to a player like that when we have the other big contracts looming?

The simple fact is that Mathis is a eleven year vet who wasn't all that good in his first six seasons, and it wasn't until he got into the Andy Reid coaching system that he really developed into a great NFL player. Comparing the two players is just silly.

Tell that to the Dallas Cowboys who drafted OG Zack Martin in the first round last year. Martin went on to become an all pro, and an offensive rookie of the year candidate while helping solidify last years best graded O line.

ELEVEN YEAR VET.......that pretty much says it all. We had no first round pick this year to draft a OL, Zach Martin was a good player....that is also not to say that Miller will ALSO not go on to be a good player.

The Bills drafted Eric Wood with a first round pick, and he has been a solid player at that position.

Yes he is.....and was a good pick......and has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation.

If that statement is so true then WTF happened to the Bills 2nd rounder in OT Cyrus Kouandjio last year who never even saw the field on the leagues near worst O line? My belief is that if you want the best at any position you should look to the first round.

Kujo was a first round projection....and we dont know how that is gonna turn out yet.

(I also get that not every player can be a first round pick. The Bills just put a higher priority on the defensive side it seems, and seem to prefer to draft for the O line in the draft after the first rounds. Yet with this philosophy the Bills been at or near the bottom of the division) 2012, 9 of 11 players on defense drafted in the 1st or 2nd round, and were 26th under Dave Wannstedt. A Top ten defense equaled 6-10 in 2013. Last year a top 4 defense equaled 9-7 with the Patriots sitting Brady in their last game

Perhaps drafting D players is Whaley's strength....is there something wrong with that? There were D players out of that game against the Patriots.

The really sad fact for me is the current FO regime agrees with you John.

I dont know that they have been proven wrong yet.......a lot of factors going on here.

  13. MD was also CRUCIAL to the scheme. look at JS's resume and Haynesworth was the guy that totally changed his rankings from bottom 10 to top 10 -- and when he missed games it was night and day. schwartz can put together a squad that hangs tough but for it to be a gamechanger, that guy in the middle being able to takeover games is critical (and generally rushing from all 4 spots)

It interesting that it seems all D coordinators....if there is something missing from their group it is a achilles heel.....

    for Schwartz it was Marcel

for Rex? I think its corners......which also EXACTLY why I think Darby was the top selection in our draft.....Rex knows that in order for his schemes to be elite.....he needs very good corners (and he has them here)

  14.

Yep. Not gonna write a story on it, so just going to report it on Twitter, but my sourcing is AP-worthy.

    jw

Im totally ok with this......I like Mathis but anything that affects the Marcel contract extension needs to be taken into account

This would take reps from John Miller anyway.......

A 3rd round rookie OG vs a seasoned vet who graded an amazing (+46.7) back in 2013 is a no brainer, and last season was on pace to be an all pro first teamer until an injury sidelined him a few games. McCoy had 1607 yards rushing in 2013, and Evans had a lot to do with that. By the same token when he was out with injuries last year is when McCoy was doing his "skittering" behind the line to find a hole. That "skittering" is a big reason why Kelly stated he wanted McCoy gone. (Spiller anyone?)

We gotta look big picture here.......which is the Marcel D. extension. I get this feeling that the team...in order to do what they want to do.....needs to pan out on draft picks at certain positions and not pay there so that they CAN pay their proven talent and keep it.....which probably means....NO MATHIS....YES MARCEL D.

    and Im ok with that

I have little to no faith in a 3rd round rookie at OG considering the results of last years three linemen drafted.

Care to take a stab on where Mathis was drafted? The fact of the matter is in the 2nd and 3rd rounds that is WHERE u find your solid offensive linemen.

Whaley should find a way to make some cap room to sign this player, and in doing do would give the Bills a solid shot at the division title / playoff spot. I know I'd be much more enthused about the up coming season, and not just for the ability to run the ball effectively but to also protect the QB, and give them real time to make all the throws. JMHO

Maybe he should go out and pick it off the money tree? If only it was that easy. The problem is not actually money available.....our owner HAS THAT AND HAS SHOWN THE WILLINGNESS TO SPEND IT....no its about cap.......Marcel D., Glenn, Gilmore, Bradham these guys are all going to need extensions.

How do you do that? By drafting well and finding players at the other spots......Miller....Darby.....O'Leary.....Karlos Williams.....look for ALL of these players to contributers.

  15. their weakest link was the inability to make up for injured key starters with scheme creativity. AW vs Pats, McKelvin vs Fish, Dareus vs Raiders

So the Jets run D was good because of Richardson? Too we bad we don't have a great Dlineman or 4.

Actually.....that right there is why this defense may actually be BETTER then last years......

When we lost Marcel.....the D under Schwartz lost a but of its luster......

Rex Ryan has the ability to cover a loss like that up IMO......when he can take players like Aaron Maybin and actually make them productive on the field........

Its really exciting...this D is going to be aggressive....its going to be fun to watch...its going to be unpredictable.....we are probably gonna have more turnovers.....sacks might be up......
