Some teams look at what they have, and might realize that the current group cannot get over the top. Then you have to look at long term success. Sure the sabres could have signed drury, briere, etc, and let vanek and roy go. But if they dont win in the next 3 years or so, they they are REALLY starting over. They may have taken a minor step back this season, but i think the moves set the franchise up better in the long term. Who do you want lto hang your hat on in 3 years? a 33 year old briere and a 35 yr old drury? Or a 29 yr old Roy and a 28 yr old Vanek?

But unless things change drastically change, i'm never going back to live. Buffalo might not seem too bad until you go and live someplace else for a while. I'm not pleased with what the sabres did over the last 12 months, but theres one simple thing to be addressed: I have yet to see anyone, and i mean anyone, explain to me, or come up with a reasonable plan, where we could have kept all the "players we should have kept", kept all of our young players, and still stayed under the salary cap. And a big overlooked reason as to why the Sabres didnt do so hot this year is the return of boring ass pre-lockout hockey. Watch the playoffs this year, and it'll seem like 10 years ago. With regards to gameplay and salary structure, it only took a bit over 2 years for the NHL to return to its old ways.

Some might say that when the weather turns bad, short passes become vital, and a pass catching tight end could be a real boon to the offense in those times. Some people might also say that a pass catching TE can be a great asset to a young developing QB. But, considering how well our offense has functioned over the past 8-10 years (1st 8 games of 2002 not withstanding), and how well our TEs have played, and how well our QBs have played, i can see why theres no need to upgrade the position.
