Would two more weeks of practice helped Maybin?
stuckincincy replied to VJ91's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here's somebody's idea of a Maybin highlight film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fDclcHXgME -
In a perfect world, his "I'm da Man! I know!" egotistical crap, lifting his leg on a 500K cash check (!), should make his wife realize what an a-hole she married and file for a divorce.

You would have liked the recent final episode of the resurrected "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". It's been on for the last month or so, with Regis Philbin. It was modified from its' original, but mostly the same stuff. The 1st rounds were simple, and the later rounds had more pop culture stuff this time around. Well - last episode. The contestant that got to play was a 24 year old, with a Harvard degree in law. He told the audience that he is now an "entertainment lawyer" - wants to cultivate show biz clients. He got a bunch of softball questions all along - my guess is that with the last episode, they wanted a big winner. The last 5 questions were easy IMO. I got them all - never did that with the old showings. So he's there for a million bucks - still has his "ask the audience" thing. Which he used - the audience said "Yoo-Hoo", the chocolate drink, which he expressed as his choice before he asked the crowd. The question was that LBJ had buttons installed to request coffee, tea, Coca-Cola...and what else? This dork took an attitude, chirped and chatted about his risk philosophy. Chose Yoo-Hoo. Puffed up, then stuck his mug, his chin out, and crowed like he just knew he had the answer and was waiting for his due. Well - I knew it was Fresca. A well-known fact. That self-loving popinjay lost $450,000. He was turned to ice, and the camera graciously turned away. Cosmic justice, eh?....

I disagree, Simon. You want to look at the new crop, but you also have to tune up your veterans. And I feel you have to see if this new bunch can play the schemes used during the regular season. Every pro ball team has seen every formation or offensive/defensive philosophy and plays ever concocted. Football has been played for a hundred years. The "plain vanilla" approach is dumb, IMO. Nobody is going to be fooled by any playcall. I want to see how the rookies and the 2nd, 3rd year folks deal with a regular season offense and defense. The staff has to winnow down from 80 to the best 53 who might show the best performance when the games count. I would never overplay vets in preseason. But I need to know who among the youngsters can deal with the offense or defense I plan for the regular season, with its' complexity. I sure don't want to have one of those 53 spots occupied by a body that simply excelled in Preseason Football 101. I would game plan for preseason tilts. I want my players involved in that. I know about clubs that try to run up undefeated PS schedules in hopes of tix sales. I'm not advocating that.

WVU's Notes and Observations

Well, there's quite a difference between a vet like Kelly with a set, experienced OL, vs. Edwards with a mish-mosh OL. That's one reason why I question their heavy usage of it so far. Personally, I wouldn't use it to the extent they have showed to date. It strikes me as gimmicky, something to excite the fans and pump up ticket sales. I like young QBs and young lines to chat things over before they line up. Who knows? With their new-found WR height, they might talk about having the receivers run some more fade or fade stop routes... -
Um, how about starting Fitzpatrick?

A run handoff play from the shotgun is by definition a deep hand-off. So there's some trade-offs. Your back can pick holes as they develop, vs. defenders getting a good view of what's going on, for one. A LB laying back sniffs what's going on - he's coming in. I still have my reservations about BUF using so much of a no-huddle. They have a jumbled-up OL...rookies, a new center, a RT playing LT. My preference is to generally huddle, to get everybody on the same page. Use the NH as a change-of-pace. I worry about missed line assignments, and then the QB getting splattered, and turn-overs. And crowd noise is a consideration, especially on the road. Adding hurry-up to it to try to catch the defenders off balance or with unfavorable personnel - great when it works, but sometimes you outsmart yourself...offsides, movement, a wide-out not covering the line, for example. There's also the idea of wearing out defenders vs. wearing out your own offense or having quick 3-and-outs, and then tiring your own defense. Roll dem bones! This past Thursday, NE* used the no-huddle/shotgun combo against CIN when Brady was in (10 of 13 snaps). An experienced line, QB, and playing at home. They only ran the no-huddle in 4 other snaps when their back-up QBs were playing. But we will see - BUF seems committed to it. -

And as you noted during the game, their love affair with the shotgun this preseason. -

How's that no huddle lookin' ? -
I'd like to see them balance their PS runs a bit. Seems like they are biasing the rushes to the left or the middle.

No doubt he will get some HOF votes through the years. I googled his name to check...starting LB with STL's SB team, and hasn't missed a regular season game for the past 8 years. That's good - real good.

..."After sitting out his first year at Penn State as a redshirt freshman, Maybin entered the draft after two college seasons and without a full season as a starter. Though he played 13 games last season, Maybin didn't take over as a full-time starter until the fourth week. But he led the Big Ten with 12 sacks and was voted a first-team All-American." http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/12095944 Well, I guess we will soon find out if he's the real deal. I hope so. Let the games begin!

Roscoe Should Not Be Traded!

I wouldn't worry about Roscoe being traded. I don't think another team will take on his current contract obligation. -

Teddy B could be on way out in NE
stuckincincy replied to bills_fan_in_raleigh's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
True. And I hope BUF is paying strict attention to the LB cut list as rosters get trimmed. I think that NE* will be watching it like the proverbial hawk. Pre-season or not, NE* gave up a fair amount of yards to a 4-11-1 club with journeymen QBs. -
