  1. NFL players speaking on their own behalf ... just proves the old adage ... He who represents himself in court has a fool for a client.
  2. knowing Mark personally ... no, it didn't work all that well. Was it better than nothing? yes ... but it was extremely insufficient compared to the newer helmets. Mark still deals with serious migraines.
  3. +1 And that is the point of what I said ... stop using the equipment to do what the body was intended to do.
  4. I just responded the Yahoo! article on my facebook page. Here is what I wrote ... Sure ... I agree with the players that we don't want to sissy-fy the NFL ... but the same problem is happening with the NHL. The common solution to both leagues' problem? Pare down the equipment ... these guys are this reckless with their hits because they will NOT feel the impact that they deliver. Take away the facemask on the players and see how they respond. Stop making shoulder pads (in the NHL, especially) that are made of ABS plastic so that the body is completely protected. Special, hardened plastics & metals have no place in the sports. Then, in the case of the NFL ... the only thing that needs to be policed is if the player lowers the head to use the crown of the helmet. Sorry, Mr. Daniels (read the article, he says "Have we become a cupcake league? We already have better helmets and gear.") ... you are a cupcake league because you're hiding behind the better helmets & gear.
  5. No more victory formation. If you're trying to run out the clock, you must gain positive yards. Otherwise the clock stops. Having the last 90 seconds not count In the game really stinks.
  6. But Satan doesn't play defense ... he really only gets empty net goals ... that's why the Sabres let him go.
  7. Absolutely wide right ... We went from the best in the world (by a mile) to the beginning of a bad joke for every comedian.
  8. My apologies that WGR has to play his show for hours in the afternoon, thinking that it will fill the need for sports talk. I tune in once every few weeks (or less) just to hear what might be talked about. More often than not, I'm left still wondering what is going on in the world of sports. He spends more time repeating his silly one liners than talking about any real information ... usually with a recorded sound bit of something that is more than often taken out of context just to make himself even 'funnier'. I've tried to give him the benefit of the doubt ... especially since so many think that he does a great interview. I've never heard what other seem to hear. All that he ever does is get guests to answer meaningless questions which usually tend to buoy his own self-absorbed arrogrance. I've never supported advertizers on his show ... or those from WGR during his show ... and my radio doesn't have a special transceiver that sends info to ESPN to let them know that I'm listening. He doesn't get ratings from me. He gets ratings from people who want their 30 seconds of fame b/c Jim Rome read their e-mail or talked to them on the show. It's the radio equivalent of America's Got Talent ... without anyone with enough talent to win (in other words, just the freak shows that want to be on TV).
  9. you think that McIntyre has played OLB since high school? He has the drive ...
  10. I don't get the Jim Rome fascination in the sports world. He is on air for about 20 minutes for each hour he broadcasts, and the opening and closing of every segment is music fill or an ad that he reads. Not only that, but he thinks he is so funny with his lines that he feels the need to repeat the same 'jokes' at least 5 - 6 times in a row ... just in case you didn't get it the first time. Guess what, Jim ... I didn't think it was funny to begin with. Someone needs to have Jim Everett come back and beat him up ...
  11. I live in OP, went to the Cleveland game last year, spent no money on food, had free parking passes ... and still felt ripped off by that game.
  12. What we're missing is that it had to do with an inappropriate gesture. Firing a gun is inappropriate in this day and age, just like slitting the throat. If that's the case, then we shouldn't have men dressed up with replica guns in the endzone. The NFL shouldn't be able to have it both ways. This would be different if Johnson pretended to shoot a ref or if he 'aimed' his non-gun at the Minutemen. He simply mimicked what they do.
  13. I just want the Bills to stop the "Fake going for it on 4th down by motioning the FB back and forth across the formation". If you line up to go for it ... go for it. They needed about a foot. If you don't make it there, you're not going to win anyway.
  14. I know Mark personally (I'm one of his pastors) ... I don't listen to him on the radio usually, but I've listened to his breakdown of play and he definitely sees stuff that I don't. He wants to believe in his team (so they miss making a play instead of just not being good enough). However, we've had plenty of conversations where he has expressed disdain for the problems the team has exhibited. Mark is no dope. He just has a tendency to see the best in people.
  15. It was pretty big in Pittsburgh circles when I lived near Pittsburgh ...
  16. Interesting that the Patsies didn't appeal the ruling (not that I've heard anyway). If they were correct in their interpretation then no penalty should have been issued.
  17. ESPN timeline of events of "Spygate" "Mortensen also reports that Belichick has privately told Goodell he has been taping opponents' signals since he became the Pats' head coach in 2000." then later (5 or so months after the original meeting between Belichick & Goodell) ... "Asked twice how far back the Patriots began to tape their opponents' signals, Goodell doesn't give a specific answer. There is no mention from Goodell that the practice dated back to 2000." Would have been a great time to say "Nope, this was an isolated incident based on a misunderstanding or misapplication of the rule" ... but there is no statement to that regard.
  18. So ... our actions do belie our values and our environment can influence our moral development. Then why do you (Jim) seem to declare that no one should worry about the actions of a professional (and some would say 'model' over the last decade) franchise? If you're simply saying that it hasn't impacted your moral development ... fine. Say that. I work with teens on a daily basis and see the effect that large & small segments of popular culture has many, if not all, of the kids I see. It is incorrect to make a blanket statement to say that no one's moral development can be harmed by cheating -- and cheat is what the Pats did (however small of an infraction you may see it as).
  19. So ... we can agree to disagree. I believe that my morality is revealed through what I do & that my environment can help or hurt my moral development ... and others (some in this thread?) believe that our decisions are independent of our true values and are based in a moral vacuum -- not influenced by what we see or hear ... Do I have that right?
  20. Funny thing about image ... is that it is relative to the sight of the one making the comment ... I should have added that it has tarnished it in my mind (but didn't think that to be necessary). I also concur that they have beat us, not by cheating, but by having superior players, coaching, etc. and at times us beating ourselves when their team stumbled (see last year). Has their cheating enhanced the matchups through the years? Maybe, possibly, probably ... we'll never know ... that's the other side of dishonesty ... you never know what you are getting. Is it the real deal? It is cheating? We don't know. In raising kids, dishonesty is the worst sin a child can commit against one's parents ... trust can be shattered (especially when it is a pattern of dishonesty) and take years to restore ... if ever.
  21. To a large extent, the Pats didn't need to cheat to beat Buffalo the last 10 years. They beat us ... we beat us. I don't blame the losing streak against the Patsies on their cheating ... but they have forever tarnished their image b/c they thumbed their noses at the authorities of the league. I remember most of the 70s ... I hate the Dolphins, but I respect that team that beat us 20 straight times. The Patsies are much of what I don't want my kids to be in growing up. This goes back to some of my most recent posts that I got hammered for. This is a sad commentary on our culture ... we are all about selfishness. Common courtesy is not all that common. Common courtesy plays by the rules because it is right. Our culture of selfishness finds any and all loopholes to jump through and then cheats as much as possible without getting caught.
  22. Yet the best blitz pick up was done by Spiller. A GB LB tried to jump him, expecting Spiller simply cut-block. Spiller held his ground and gave TE the time he needed. Unfortunately Matthews blew thru the middle on that play for one of his three sacks ... but Spiller did his job
  23. Again, I am beyond belief that being unselfish is something to be criticized.
  24. Courtesy is defined as a courteous, respectful, or considerate act or expression. That's exactly what I'm advocating by you look out for other's interests first. You've apparently missed my point. You're criticizing me for calling us to be less selfish? By saying I should show courtesy?
  25. Words like freedom & liberty actually mean nothing to you. I'm sure you'll try to deny it, but there was a time that your thoughts would be considered un-American. Now in our country, it's all about me, me, me. This attitude is what is taking our country down. It's not the economy, not taxes ... It's a me first, selfish, perverted view of liberty. Life is much better for everyone if you think of others before you consider your own desires. I still find it hard to believe that you admit that you're like this. I'd be embarrassed to admit something like that.
