Week 13 Around the League Thread

While it was pass interference it was nowhere near egregious and in fact I've seen reply NOT call that at least 25 times this year. So yea, you have to wonder about the leagues motivation in overturning that INT because they haven't come close to overturning non PI calls that were that weak. -

Yea funny how that works. I think Mahomes is great and Allen is going to have a clunker - maybe this season, that will bring out the haters in force. It's just the week to week grind of a long NFL season. But yea it's nice to hear ow we could have had Mahommes! -

So can we say that the rumors of Goff's demise have been greatly exaggerated? All week the so called national "experts" were burying this guy. Now last I looked he's over 400 yards with 2 TD's and his team is winning 34 - 0. Meanwhile I wonder what all those national "experts" who were saying that Kyler Murray was on the verge of becoming the next Lamar Jackson are going to say tomorrow? Why we seek the approval of these social media posting/pod casting/radio jabbering clowns is beyond me. We OVER analyze every play Allen makes and keep giving the so called experts a pass when they completely crap the bed on their analysis. -

Jumping the route! Chiefs up 21 - 0. It's important for us that the Chiefs win. -

That was as bad of a throw by Mahomes as Allen has had in his first 2 seasons. It was classic hero ball and only by pure luck was it not intercepted. I'm actually surprised I just watched him try to make that throw. A 50% off coupon at an all you can eat Chinese buffet! -

Ten wins gets us into the playoffs. And if we can't beat the Jets at home we don't deserve to make the post season. -

Darnold throws 4 straight incompletions, Bengal's take over on downs and will win the game. -

Jets gained a total of 3 yards in the 3rd quarter. Bengals doing their damnedest to let NYJ back into the game. Got lucky on a real screwy play by Dalton- no harm done though. -

You might be right. Jets just had to punt again after a 3 & out: Run for no gain; Pass to Bell for 3 yard gain; Darnold sacked. Bengals DOMINATING the Jets O-line. -

At the end of the 3rd quarter, Bengals lead 22 - 6. On their last possession Darnold threw 3 straight incompletions. This game isn't over though. Bengals doing stupid stuff. It wouldn't shock me if the Jets had a comeback. -

Bengals hit the FG, now lead 22 - 6 with about a minute left in the 3rd. -

Jets just held a Bengal in the end zone. Safety Cincinnati! Bengals lead 19 - 6! -
It's not about "math anxiety", it 's about applying statistical & mathematical analysis to a chaotic system. The three biggest issues involving the use of analytics as a tool in football compared to baseball are: * the enormous variability involved in EVERY NFL play. The fact that on any given play there are a minimum of 40 human beings involved (22 players; 5 refs; 10 - 15 coaches) creates a huge # of potential outcomes. * the much smaller sample size in football means that the impact of the variability is magnified. There are over 160 baseball games in a season compared to 16 football games. * the number of subjective measurements involved. When conducting controlled clinical trials or running lab experiments most of the data subjected to statistical analysis is obtained either through objective measurement or at least highly controlled subjective measurement. Given these facts, it's particularly foolish to apply analytics to young players where the sample size is ridiculously small.

Allen 4th and 1 opinions wanted
CincyBillsFan replied to Don Otreply's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
On that play I had 3 reactions in 10 seconds: * Oh s!!t he fumbled the snap * Then when he picked up the ball i yelled "don't hold the ball out like that it's not the end zone" * Then HOLY S!!T, he made the first down. Watching the replay I still don't know how he got the ball out of that pile. I also wonder what Morse was thinking at the bottom of the pile? He had to be like "what the hell is going on up there!" -
Josh Allen - week THIRTEEN report card
CincyBillsFan replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Remember Romo did the Vikings game last year and that's when he saw what Allen could do. With a young QB who by all accounts was a PROJECT Allen continues to make progress. Real progress. And was it just me but or did he seem like an old vet out there waking to the line and calmly calling audibles? I was expecting to here Allen yell out "OMAHA" at any moment! -
Josh Allen - week THIRTEEN report card
CincyBillsFan replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A+ Anything less is wrong IMO. He ran the offense today. His accuracy was phenominal and how many of you KNEW we had the TD the moment Allen broke the pocket and headed for the end zone? The drive of the day was after we stopped the Cowboys on downs at the 5 and Allen drove the Bills into FG range, eating up 7 minutes and effectively ending the game. Impressive. -
Looking at Jackson's stat sheet the first thing I thought of was "those are the kind of numbers you see in high school". 15 completions AND 5 TD passes! Now I say this not to be disrespectful but to show just how unusual the Ravens offense really is. As others have mentioned when was the last time a QB threw FIVE TD passes on 15 completions totaling about 150 yards? Baltimore is running the most exotic offense in the NFL by going OLD SCHOOL. They are using NFL talent to run a high school offense and may win a Super Bowl doing it. It's the coolest story in the NFL and an example of the type of out of the box thinking the NFL sorely needs. Jackson deserves a lot of credit here but the most important person in this story is coach Harbough. There isn't another NFL team that would have done what he did. If Jackson was drafted by any other team he would either been a back-up or struggling starter. And not because he can't play - he clearly can play, but because the NFL is set in its ways and views innovation as the cooties.
-
Because on their remaining schedule the ONLY defenses that stand a chance of slowing down the Ravens on paper are Buffalo and San Fran. And given that the game is in Buffalo, which has a strong home field advantage and the potential for lousy weather, KNOWLEDGEABLE football announcers would have pointed that out. But let's be honest here most of the announcers are morons who add very little to the viewing experience.

It will be an interesting match-up in that we have a pair of athletic safeties who can tackle. Also Edmunds & Milano seem to have the physical tools to matcgh up well with this offense. Though after this game I could see Lorenzo hanging it up saying "screw this, I'm to old for this sh!!. And I don't think a better secondary is needed to stop Jackson's passing game. I can't recall a game where he's had to fit the ball into tight coverage. His forte is fooling the DB's into thinking he might run then hitting wide open receivers. Even when Jackson is in the shotgun spread EVERY pass is a play action pass. Because of the threat that he's just going to tuck the ball and hit a hole safeties have to look at him. And that leads to open receivers. My guess is that the way to defense the Ravens is to have a couple of big & fast safeties who can lay a wallop on a ball carrier and a D that lines up in a 3 - 4 with fast athletic LB's that can tackle in space.
-
My guess is no if the game is in Baltimore. The 49's struggled a bit with Kyler Murray and I think their D is built like every other NFL D - to stop the LA Rams! It will take Darth Belichick to stop it.
-
I largely agree with you. Jackson is a unique talent executing a unique to the NFL offense. It can't be emphasized enough how exotic an NFL offense the Ravens are running. It's truly unlike anything anyone else is running. The ability of Jackson to run the football like a 3rd down back and the offenses willingness to throw away the rules of down & distance when running the football has flummoxed the league. In fact it looks to me that as the season has gone on the ravens have become even less conventional then they were in the first few games. Jackson almost never slides and they're as likely to run the ball on 3rd & 8 as throw it. It will be fascinating to see how long Lamar can hold up and how long it takes the league to catch up.
-
Anything can happen. But I would bet against it. The injury risk is real and over time his body will degrade. Sure Gore has lasted forever as a RB but he's an extreme exception to the rule. I also think that like in college football the pros will adjust to this type of attack. Don't forget that pro defenses are built to stop the NFL's mono-culture of spread offenses. What Baltimore is doing is brilliant but it won't last very long because two things will happen: * More teams will adopt this offense leading to * Defenses creating schemes and getting personnel able to best handle it.
-
He has a long way to go to match Wilson's passing game from the pocket. I actually think Jackson is a unique to the NFL talent. Decent passing game with a body type that resembled a 3rd down RB. He moves, accelerates and cuts like a RB. Wilson & Vick couldn't do that in the tight spaces Lamar does between the tackles. He and Baltimore really are effectively executing a college offensive scheme. The NFL doesn't handle innovation very well.
