9/26/21 Bills vs. WTF Postgame Thread

Chuckle huh?? I admit I kind of get annoyed at these overly-simplistic correlation/causation stats and the conclusions folks come to when we don't hit those. I get annoyed only because it leads to those hoards of fairweather fans that lay too much offensive blame or success at the feet of Allen's passing stats ignoring the nuances of complimentary football and strategic game planning. Last year we were ridiculously slanted towards a pass-first/pass-heavy offense with empty sets and most defenses tried to counter that by blitzing and bringing 5 rushers and playing a mix of zone and man behind that. Allen had a lot of success passing against those defenses and the offense was clicking - finding success, completions, and our team was likely winning those games. Then defenses changed the way they played us. Rushing 4 and dropping everyone else into coverage and our offensive production stalled. However, we won in lopsided fashion in Miami last week without Allen hitting the magic 300 yards, so how did that statistical outlier happen? We did it operating out of 11 personnel, with hard running that extended drives and also found the end zone, and by playing complimentary football. That 11 personnel run/pass balance strategy keeps defenses honest, slows down the pass rush giving Allen more time, forces them out of dropping 7 into shell coverage, keeps Allen upright, puts one more potential blocker in the backfield, helps extend drives and win the TOP stat, it also opens up play action for deeper shots. If defensive coordinators have to account for the Bills run game, that makes this offense that much more effective down the stretch against those teams with better front 4's that stand between our Bills and a championship. -
Like anything else, the more you do something the more used to it you get. I think Allen is very genuine. He really loves this org and desparately wants to do well in front of the home crowd. He presses at times early in games, and struggles reeling in that arm, but I like his long-term chances of playing solid in front of large crowds. Based on today's performance I think he may be trending in the right direction.

He did throw in some head-scratchers out there... tosses into triple coverage in the middle of the field....he also seems blind to robber concepts when locked onto his primary receiver. The glass is not empty though... some good touch on some throws and pretty good mobility and pocket awareness. -
Gronk just got wasted on a pass behind him...

So Andy Reid taken to the hospital after their loss??? https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32287383/kansas-city-chiefs-coach-andy-reid-taken-hospital-sunday-loss-source-says

Horribly tough market for a rookie QB to play in. An org really has to surround a young QB there with a great o-line and running game as well as a TE safety blanket to let him grow into the role. Don't see that happening anytime soon. You are probably right, the kid would benefit from sitting for a while to absorb what is happening around him.

Watching Gronk use his patented slow route with a leg drag to pick a defender and free up the middle of the field. Had flashbacks of the same plays freeing up Edelman for years against our defenses. Announcers defending it... I get that all teams do it, but when you are caught setting up the pick you are caught.

Stafford escapes the Detroit event horizon and looks like a QB that can get things done. Who would have thought? Rams look pretty good and have a premier TE in Cooper Kupp - that always helps.

That was really odd, I cannot recall any time I have seen a lateral pass or screen used in a team's own end zone.... Miami just doinked the ball off the upright.... man are they snake bit this year. Liking it

Although talented, I feel like their rush was rather predictable. Unlike Pittsburgh's mastery of the zone blitz bringing linebackers, safeties, and corners from various positions behind the line to overload protections while dropping d-linemen to cover those zones WFT seems to rely more on the athleticism of their front 4 than trying to confuse protections. They did have one well-timed safety blitz from the slot, but Allen's quick release on a slant basically negated it. At one point in the 2nd half they desperately tried bringing 5 on the rush and playing more man, but Allen saw so much of that his first 2 years that he ate that up on our long drive. Knew he was in their head at that point. -

Watching Carr throw and his exaggerated release and passes hang like punts. Just amazed that he does not get picked off more and the difference in velocity and arc is just that much more pronounced having watched Allen for the past few years. You kind of lose perspective of just how quick Allen's release is and how strong his arm is. -

I know right??? I remember years where our offense averaged under 20 pts. The obsession with style points over solid team wins - just dumb. -

Teams have to respect the run because we actually have a RB in the backfield. Daboll seems to have finally divorced himself from his empty set obsession and provided the balance and play-action out of 11 personnel that Allen needed to slow down the pass rush and attack lighter nickel and dime packages. Seems they spent more time game planning how to attack WFT from out of their 11 personnel than they did against Miami. Although I think Miami has a better secondary than WFT and that prob played into our pass offense stalling in Miami more than just failing to scheme guys open. Williams is still leaking pressure, but with Dawkins playing lights-out on his left Allen just needs to keep one eye on William's rusher to side-step that rush and he was able to often escape to the right that he is most comfortable with in his scramble drill. -

Pittsburgh had all off season to plan on how to attack our offense and they have a great defense. Even then, Allen had a few opportunities and missed them and our receivers also had a few key drops. We had a questionable DPI that reversed an INT deep in Pittsburgh territory.... Even with a poor game plan by Daboll that was absent using 11 personnel and running to slow down the pass rush, we had our chances in that game. Trolls with sketch names I have never seen on TBD were out in full force after one loss and did not want to take any time to dig into the whys. Just a lot of he sucks, they suck, season over nonsense. -

Yeah, normally you would expect a larger safety or linebacker on a TE that can be physical and defend the jump ball. Have not been a fan of how Frazier defends TEs, but it seems to be something he is willing to sacrifice in his scheme. Hurts most when we go against those better TE's - although they did do well against Gesicki. Not sure if that was great pass defense or just how much heat we were dialing up with our pass rush in that game. -

I am sure he is contributing to QB's holding the ball longer as he gets into throwing lanes, but getting off blocks, closing, and making clean tackles for a stop or a loss - not so much. Still needs work and that is why he is often rated so low compared to other LBs. Not really in the mood to B word that much today - feeling good about a win, but there are always things a team can clean up. -

That area of the field was open on that 4 and 2 Josh tried to squeeze in to Diggs, it was good to see him just take the easy scramble -
