Huge Ralph Wilson Statement linked posted on TWS by bbb
UConn James replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I believe the intention would be for him to control his message and image, without a lot being lost in the disarray that is a real-time speaking event. Even for people far younger, smarter, more tactful, and telegenic than Ralph is, pulling off a good impression and getting out the exact message you want to have heard during a live presser is damned difficult. I make no guff in how Ralph decides to present his message, what format it's delivered in, how it's produced. What matters is its content. If rumors are to be believed, then this would likely be his final appearance where a lot of people are going to be watching. I would want strict control over that as well, if it were going to be the parting impression on a group of people that would in large part be determining my legacy. It's tantamount to how Pres. Reagan bade farewell to the nation on one of his good days. -
You don't wear gloves all the time for that stuff?! What, because they're not tactile enough? I sometimes work with stone in various construction stuff, and that's a problem I have with ones like these http://www.lowes.com/pd_184240-76744-LO9131_4294763928__?productId=3111013&Ns=p_product_avg_rating%7C1&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNs%3Dp_product_avg_rating%7C1&facetInfo= . These regular leather gloves are very unwieldy... like trying to pluck a stray hair with a pair of kitchen tongs. Try a pair like these. I use 'em all the time. Tight fit, surprisingly durable, and the rubberized grips are really handy for even fine motor task stuff. http://www.constructiongear.com/dewalt-rubber-work-gloves.html?utm_source=googlepepla&utm_medium=adwords&id=54438971730&utm_content=pla&gclid=CNKNkYiGxLQCFYuZ4AodGSkAiA

Thurman Thomas on John Murphy at 8 pm Tonight

I'd be all right with it. I would want to see Pete Metzelaars retained as TE coach. Chandler took another step this year and Lee Smith looked decent at times. This season wasn't Pete's fault. -

Average of 85 gun deaths each day in US
UConn James replied to truth on hold's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Remember this story from last week? The RPG turned in at a gun buy back program in Los Angeles? It was a non-functional prop from a film set. That was my first thought when I saw it, just by seeing the story's dateline location. You can see the labels in a different photo: https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/531851_10151254285122758_1230744598_n.jpg?dl=1 And the stevestojan of it is that the Law Enforcement people who held a press conference to showcase this KNEW it, lied bald-faced straight into the cameras, and were trying to sell this canard to further a political objective. In a just world, they would be fired. Not that it matters now. It's in the collective mindset. Just like the 1% tip for the waitress that was an OWS fake, the far left knows they only have to trigger an initial story where a sympathetic-cause reporter will swallow everything. In the resulting walk-back when the truth is revealed, only a certain percentage of the people who saw the original story on page A1 will see the correction on page G16, and the liberal cause is advanced. -
[closed]Next GM/Head Coach - Part 1
UConn James replied to Wing Man's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Whaley has been with the Bills forever?? Dude came here from Pittsburgh FO (remember the pornographic email that he mistakenly sent all around the league including to Goodell?) after John Guy was shown the door. -
The judgement-call no-review is an issue I've written about many times here. It's shameful that a single play that can result in anywhere from 15 to 80 yards+ is not allowed to be looked at by the booth. I'd also say to remove the referee entirely from the review process. While it's quaint to believe that they will be noble and not simply back their crew every time, I've seen some doozies here just this year that make me fundamentally question the integrity of the game. Above all, there needs to be consistency. And especially in PI calls, there is none. One guy gets mauled, no flag. Another guy merely gets breathed on and it's 40 yards. In combination with all the other stuff going on WRT health effects / brain injuries / violence issues, the quality of officiating and the rules changes that give defenses little chance to compete only furthers the question of whether I want to keep supporting the game with my viewership and dollars. I can watch majors tennis and be sure that Hawkeye gets the line calls absolutely right, and know that it's highly unlikely that anybody is going to be concussed. The NFL has got to clean up its game.

Thurman Thomas on John Murphy at 8 pm Tonight
UConn James replied to TheZone78's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's my reasoning. He (or, more likely, the BuffNews beat reporter who made the case for Reed) could know how many votes Andre had, who returning voters are, who new voters are and how they're going to vote from private conversation. Unless it is a radio or teevee show, this would be my best guess. -

My guess is it's Hall of Fame news. Andre Reed finally has the votes. -
Obama takes no action on gun control;
UConn James replied to Keukasmallies's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Feinstein in Senate, Gov. Cuomo in NY are reportedly set to present bills making gun buy-back program participation cumpulsory & confiscation of semi-automatics. http://washingtonexaminer.com/sen.-feinstein-suggests-national-buyback-of-guns/article/2516648#.UNsSwrO9KSP Holy stevestojan.... Add TE to off-season needs...
UConn James replied to Dragonborn10's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Like it or not, Belichick is on the fore of this. True dual-threat TEs that, more than just being an outlet / dump-off option, have all the skills of a WR only in a bigger body. LBs can't keep pace with them, CBs are too small to cover. It's not just this defense that Hernandez and Gronk have destroyed. It's a tactical advantage that many teams just can't handle. David Nelson is a de facto second TE. I'd say it can't hurt to pick up a guy like the ND TE, if he can be gotten in place or if he slips a bit into whatever round (I'm guessing early 2nd). Biggest part of it, tho, is going to be a QB who can throw them the ball. But that's in another thread.... -
Who do you think is going to deliver medical necessaries person to person in the case of a N/B/C attack? My father is a rural carrier and it's in the training guide stuff that he will be among the first wave group getting preventative care like potassium iodide or what have you, and that he CANNOT transfer this care to anyone. It very much IS a matter of national security to be able to reach everyone in the country.

Nix Doesn't Deserve To Pick A New Coach
UConn James replied to box0life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't forget that Buddy signed off on Chan hiring Wannstache. Any GM has to give some leverage to his coach, but in "The Buck Stops Here" fashion, Nix owns that from-bad-to-worse move, too, to go along with the fatal-itself move of sticking with Fitz and not even bringing another guy in. This is a QB league and Nix went with a guy who physically can't throw more than 20 yards and whose accuracy is atrocious. I love Fitz's toughness, his durability, his heart, his intelligence, his quickness, his facile nature. But the man cannot throw a ball and that is Job #1, 2 and 3 for the QB. That Nix refused to do anything about it until about 2 weeks ago means he should get walking papers. If he is that glaringly blind about THE most important position on a team, what's his ignorance of minor areas? I'm not even on the Whaley wagon, either. This whole thing needs to be scoured, top to bottom. -
Again... "The Price of Politics" by Bob Woodward. You know, of Woodward and Bernstein fame? The debt deal was SO tantalizingly close last year. Boehner had wrestled the votes among even the fresh Tea Party Repubs for an $800M tax increase on high earners, that he and Obama had discussed as a framework. Then Obama said by telephone that it would have to be $1.2T in taxes increases. It was at that point that the debt limit was raised at the last minute and the fiscal cliff stuff put in place so the whole nasty-ass stuff could be put off until after the election. Worst tactical move Boehner could have made, in kicking the can down the road. Now, instead of there having been a watershed moment where Democrats proved to be the profligate tax-and-spenders that they are before the election, the GOP is about to kill their sacred cow and the Democrats --- who want spending increases so they can tear through that pile of the rich's money --- are negotiating to eat it. If Boehner had any balls he would say to earmark the tax increase for the deficit/debt. But he's proved to be a pushover to this administration, rather than flexing the House's spending muscles. He should be saying, If you want Dime One, we're talking spending cuts or GTFO.
-
Did you not even read the highlights of Bob Woodward's book? There was a deal in hand --- Boehner had the votes at a $800M tax increase on the rich --- and then Obama killed it when he did a bait-and-switch and demanded a $1.2T tax increase. One of the worst things the Republicans have done under Boehner's leadership is let the Democrats punt things until after elections. It gave a free pass and enabled Democrats to not have to run on SCREAMING records of tax-and-spend. It has let Obama/Dems stay on offense and dictate play. It has let Dems define Republicans. You can't just push this stuff to a later date and assume that you're going to be in a better negotiating position post-election. Boehner has been the epitome of zero backbone and zero cojones and look what it's got him. Ryan is very popular in the Congress, he's the numbers guy, he's the nominal party leader right now in this vacuum period.

There's planning and then there's bucking up and saying 'Let's get this done!' and stop handsitting. Some of these same entities were planning the Peace Bridge for 30 years.... It'll be up to the next owner now. Frankly, that doesn't fill me with confidence.

This was like the 96-year-old buying a new kitchen range because all the burners on his ancient one won't light anymore because they're gummed up with junk or connections have failed. It doesn't mean that he's going to start fixing up the entire house so it's a primo place and sells for a lot of coin after he's gone. All it means is that he has to have a stove so his home aide can have something to cook on so he doesn't starve. This simply kicked the can far enough down the road so we can keep walking, but short enough that the next guy isn't encumbered to kicking it more if s/he doesn't want to or if it's not profitable (enough).

Eric Wood: "Toronto series is a joke"
UConn James replied to 5 Wide's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As Craig Ferguson (the late, late show on CBS) said in a standup bit of his, there are three questions that must be asked before making a statement of any importance: Does this need to be said? Does this need to be said right now? Does this need to be said right now by me? The answer to the first two is definitely yes. And in this, I admire him for saying what few others have had the balls to say (and I believe he may be the first one to say this who actually has chips on the table). But that third one applies for EW. I can't imagine that these words will be looked at very kindly by the management/FO. It's been shown over and over that they don't care how much talent you have, if you embarrass them in public, they WILL cut off their noses to spite their faces.
