Mixed In With Poor Play Luck Has Not Been On Our Side In Losses
corta765 replied to corta765's topic in The Stadium Wall
I would also add that Josh has proven over the last few years he is very capable and dependable at winning games, this year it just hasn't gone our way as the Titans and Jags he came up short. It happens. I know people idolize Brady or Rodgers etc.. but they have not won every game in their career and successfully comeback every time. -

Exactly. While I get wanting your QB to lead game winning drives 24/7, you can't pick the good games your QB has and what your opponent does. Until this week Allen was #1 for MVP in betting because he played well. Seems weird to jump ship that fast as a fan anger wise -
100% agree. If I were to say what is the Bills core through 2025 it would be this: Offense: Allen Diggs Davis (for now) Knox Dawkins Brown Defense: Oliver Groot Edmunds Milano White T. Johnson Pretty solid core but you can see if they can get just one more true stud it would do wonders to the strength of this group. Get two or three more great guys and the sky is the limit.
-
Agreed. I know Bills fans really love to hype our team, but the Bills are more driven by a deep collection of B- to B+ type players with maybe 3-4 true A caliber guys being Allen, Diggs, White, & I would argue Milano when healthy which is his biggest caveat. The depth helps in terms of making the team competitive across the board, but they are missing at least one if not two guys to put them over the top for real. The defensive line is good example of this because they are solid as a group at DT/DE but realistically there is no true star or alpha player just guys playing their role at a high level. Now nothing necessarily wrong with this when you have Allen at QB especially, but the Bills look a lot to me like the Packers of the last decade where they have a stud QB, WR, one two guys on defense and then just depth not true alpha difference makers. That is the missing piece and its hard to get.

My point is more you are not going to go 5-1 every year in one score games and they had games last year they could've lost which they didn't play as well. If they lost to the Rams everyone would've been fuming, we only view it as a good game because we won. -
Please remember the Brady you see now was not the Brady that existed back in the first part of his career. 2007 was the year he morphed into the guy you see now. I think if Allen gets another year or two of facing this coverage the patience and attack will come like Brady. Up until this point he hadn't faced coverage like this and against the Titans he picked them to pieces so the ability is there.
-
The COVER 2 is effective IF you are able to get pressure quickly on the QB. Both Allen and Mahomes this season are having guys coming through before they can even make a read properly. Yea the Cover 2 takes away the easy downfield threat, but the bigger issue is more the lack of time to get the open guy. Given Allen 3 seconds of true pocket time not him running to make the pocket and the effect is muted. The Titans game they ran Cover 2 a lot but he had more time to make throws. That really is the crux of it to me.

The last time I can remember the Bills so thoroughly off was McD's first season when they hit that 0-3 stretch. It is very odd to see them so uncomposed. -

I am not disagreeing. My point though was last year against the Jets the offense wasn't great there but they got a catch or play here. If Gabe Davis catches that pass and the Bills win 13-9 the conversation is different right now the same way the win over the Jets become a non thing despite only getting 18. This season the breaks are not falling their way AND mixed with bad play it is biting them hard. I 100% agree the execution and performance was awful. -

One of the things that defies good vs bad teams is seasons like this. Truthfully Buffalo deserved one of PIT/TEN/JAX just in percentage goes your way type thing and didn't, yet they are still 5-3 and ok at this moment. Bad teams don't get those wins AND they are 3-5 or 4-4 because they couldn't make up the difference. Sports are weird haha -

Don't disagree which is why I said this year we are getting the opposite of good fortune. Odds are they will get some luck back in a game or two, but good fortune hides sometimes what would be bad or very disappointing losses. -
Last year the Bills had a superb record in one score games going 5-1 in games decided by 8 pts or less (I did 8 because a TD can get a 2 pt conversion) with the only blemish being a freakin Hail Mary, so almost a perfect 6-0. This year in their 5 wins Buffalo has been averaging in victory at least 15 pts or more in point differential to their opponent, but all three losses have been one score affairs where a break here in each one swings it and we just didn't get it. Additionally last year was superb on 4th downs and this year they have been crap. Here is a look at how close things have been: PIT: The block punt for TD. Without that it is 16-16. Additionally the Bills themselves came within a whisker of a block punt for a TD. Both fourth down calls were failures in this game. TEN: The obvious big play is the failed fourth down conversion at the end. Last year that is a TD, this year luck just wasn't our fortune there. Additionally the Titans on 4th and 2 themselves converted a 15 yard play to AJ Brown on a drive that put the Titans back up 24-23. JAX: Two plays stuck out to me as the killers of victory. The fumble by Allen when they were in FG range to tie and the drop by Davis who had twenty yards of pavement in front to put the Bills in position for a tie if not TD to win. Regardless of how bad Buffalo had played both of those plays were major negatives that straight up didn't go our way. 0-3 in one score games a year after going 5-1. Last year remember in the one score wins we did benefit against the Rams on a PI call on 4th down, in interception against the Jets late in that game, and the forced fumble by Zimmer against NE. Football is a game of averages in many respects the breaks we caught last year haven't went our way this year regardless of how well or bad Buffalo has played. The Titans game to me was the Rams all over where the offense did fine, our defense just ran out of gas except this year we ended up on the wrong end. The Jets game last year felt very similar to the Jags except the Jags game we turned the ball over too much taking away points and the two big plays we could've used went against us. If you read this and say "even so they have issues and I have major concerns" that's cool I get that no qualms. If Buffalo won even one of those three games I think fans feel better about the team even if we still lost to Jax. The combo of the three with bad fortune just stinks. To me though Buffalo is due a game and odds are they will get one where instead it goes our way when a part of the team or the entire team isn't having their best day.

I would tend to agree that the o line is not very good this year, but Josh's ability to move and create so many plays mutes at times how rough it really is. I will say the O-Line in 19 and 20 was good, but age and identity/communication REALLY seem to be hitting it hard this year. Diggs the last few games has def been avoiding contact I think his knee got tweaked against TEN but they are not saying anything because he did go to the sidelines with a trainer that game.

If there is actual blood in the water we have a much larger problem on our hands haha

I would like to think after yesterday that the Bills would come in like a team on fire after yesterday and the embarrassment it was. I would also like to think the Jets offense comes down a little after two higher scoring games as bad teams tend to do that after little spurts. BUT it is impossible not to be slightly skeptical as I would've thought after the Dolphins game the Bills would've come out guns blazing and the same after the Titans so IDK. I just can't see them losing but I can see a 21-10 win with fans not satisfied in the least.

Never said can him but it just offers questions that are fair. You only get so many cracks as a team and a coach, if guys start buying out that is not a good sign for his future and this ownership has never had a problem firing people.
-
Agreed. There are three outcomes which are 1. Bills get their stuff back together and win division 2. Bills make the playoffs but barely and NE wins division 3. miss entirely. I believe its fairly likely it ends outcome 1. , but if it ends up being 2 or 3 I think it is fair to question McD and his long term future.

Can we all say that 11/14/21 is our Judgement day.....for this season

Hahahahaahahah. Thank you for making me laugh I needed this. -
The Pats have some legit tough games, but yea they are there and I wouldn't be stunned if at some point they actually have the lead.
-
I get the comparison in terms of big success followed by a downer esq season, I just never have bought the following year the team is due to be great then. I actually think they can still turn this around despite the flaws on offense, the biggest thing is they just need to be smarter and more cohesive across the board on offense.
-
I kid you not on Saturday I was like "heck the Sabres haven't been bad lets give it a whirl" 10 seconds in get scored on and the 1st period was as bad as the last decade. That was all of the Sabres for me that night haha
-
Good comparison and I tend to agree. 05-06 like 2020 Bills were just hard working motivated driven teams. The high end talent exists on this Bills team and 06-07 Sabres, but there 100% is a level of complacency because they turned it on. This season to me is just starting to feel like they will make the playoffs but they will lose early, perhaps in a really really gut punching way that might be needed to snap them into focus long term. The KC game on they just look so damn different.

I did my 24 hrs before posting rule and I apologize Virigl if I steal some of what you would say again this week (hey great minds think a like) but here I go: 1. This is the biggest crossroads for McD since the Peterman start and subsequent disaster vs the Chargers. The talent is there to be a Super Bowl team without a doubt, but the flaws are there like any team. The Bills besides being bad on offense and very undisciplined as a team also looked disinterested. The week before against Miami it took until Milano's big hit to seemly awaken the team. Since McD has started this is the least invested the team has been which is my greatest concern and his greatest challenge. McD has done a superb job in his time here getting the team to buy in and truly grind day in day out and take nothing for granted. Since the KC win they look like a team mentally that does not know how to handle being the alpha team. The Bills have had bad losses but you never questioned the buy in or energy whereas yesterday some of then players genuinely seemed to just kind of expect success just because. This is the Bills biggest hurdle more then anything, even when they had lesser talented teams in 2017-2019 you knew they were going a full 60 mins with you. They need to find it and if they do not the season will have a quick end. 2. I have been a Brian Daboll defender and he deserves a lot of credit for Josh's growth and the offenses progression. But time has come for serious questions with his play calling an overall play design. Three separate losses all have had play calls on QB runs, or runs in general, or passing formations that are very east/west in design that leave the casual fan saying what are you doing? With Josh getting the crap kicked out of him why are you running him on 3rd and 2 when your in FG range with Bass who makes those kind of kicks all day and the day itself has been a five alarm fire? For an offense that was soo aggressive last year and creative, this year is a shell. Has Isiah McKenzie had a single jet sweep this season which is a really good play typically? Why is Diggs role feeling so limited? Injuries are part of football, you still need to figure out a way to make it function. He has been behind the ball on many trends in each game until it feels too late. Firing Daboll probably is a bridge too far, but McD needs to have a meeting about the offense and type of play calls they are running and lack of red zone production. 3. Hero Ball Josh made its return but I cannot necessarily blame him. That was Allen's worst game since NE 2019 (week 4) in my eyes. This season I actually think he has been anywhere from decent (PIT) to great (KC) and not truly had a bad performance and the team was winning or competitive because of him. Yesterday was a day where if he just held the ball or didn't force it they win just by allowing points on the board. That said I 100% get why he got to that extreme because the offensive line was offensive and he got zero help. I am less concerned with Josh in terms of play because I know he will bounce back, we know what he is he is fine in that regard. My giant concern is the hits he is taking at this point. He no longer is getting hammered on runs but regularly in the pocket. Even if he does not get a full injury that beating can wear a guy where he is just not at his best when it matters. A team like Vegas would have a field day in the playoffs against Josh if the line play doesn't improve. 4. Tyler Bass is criminally underappreciated. This kid had a rough start in 2020 and since then has been pure money. When we are from distance I do not even worry about him now and across the league kicking has been subpar this year. Appreciate we got a good one even in a game as bad as yesterday. 5. Defense you were failed yesterday and that really sucks. 6. Voodoo! I swear we got some weird voodoo in Jacksonville and play really weird and crappy games there. Adding to poor voodoo might be time to retire the white jersey and blue bottoms for good I am buying that it is cursed. Also if you are an NFL player DO NOT GO ON MANNING CAST it will wreck your week! VOODOO! 7. After Baltimore and Tennessee the AFC is all over the place right now which is good and bad. I am a big believer that you do not know a lot at week 8 compared to the end of the season and getting too antsy right now is not worth it. That said the Bills have a pretty wild field of teams they are fighting for with the playoffs and NE is going to be close at seasons end. I still think the Bills will take the division, but you are not getting the cake walk we had last year. The #1 seed is hard to think of now, but the the AFC is really tight and I truthfully do not think you could make a truly solid guess right now at who is taking the 1 seed. 8. I said last week it was foolish for people to so quickly write-off the Titans loss as no big deal and the team would just bounce back. Football is not linear by any means and emotion matters. The Bills still look like a team that is just expecting to win despite getting punch down in a prize fight three weeks ago. There probably is some truth to the schedule being weaker and the team underestimating it. Last year was easy to get motivated as they wanted the division crown so bad after being so close the prior year where a loss like AZ wasn't a big deal. This year the Titans game if anything was a car dashboard that warning lights started coming on as Josh was constantly under pressure throughout and the O line had a rough night while the D had a down game. The offensive trends have continued and finally the engine broke yesterday asking for repairs. 9. On a final lighter note apparently it was 59 in Jax and Bills fans were in the pool. Never change Bills fans never change
