So who's YOUR starting qb?
transplantbillsfan replied to Steptide's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I gotta say, I think it's really sad that you're on here posting so freakin much now. Not because I don't think you have a right to post. But because, for you, Tyrod looking bad or any imminence of him potentially being benched is like red meat thrown into your kennel. Your post count per day increased exponentially once you saw, in particular, the Eagles game. I think if Peterman becomes the starter and plays really well, you won't know what to do with yourself because all you seem capable of is endlessly negative criticism of particular players and posters who you label as "homers" of that player. I bet if Peterman ends up the starter and retains the job because he vastly exceeds expectations, you'll be one of those posters who just gloats and rubs it in the faces everyone you think got it wrong rather than celebrating the play of the guy you exalted so much. There are Eeyores of the world and you seem to be one of them. Just ridiculous. As to your post, I think a lot of people are looking at a Defense that's likely to take 2 or 3 steps forward with an offense that takes a step back. Still a step forward. Personally, I think our D is going to pretty dramatically improve from last year and that this team might be lined up (unfortunately) for another middling season. It looks like 8-8 to me. The optimistic homer in me is thinking 10 wins are possible, though, with an offense that plays much better than it has appeared in the preseason. With Matthews coming in hopefully healthy and Dennison likely implementing an offense we've only seen a fraction of, so far, I think it's possible, but not likely. Whoever is under center, it seems pretty clear that Dennison is running the offense differently through the QBs in the preseason. As Hokie said earlier in the thread, I'd say it's likely to test them and make them uncomfortable in order to try to get them used to the aspects of his offense they'll be most uncomfortable in. Taylor's used to taking snaps in the shotgun, yet only 35% (20/57) of all his preseason snaps were taken in the shotgun. and before you say that's because Dennison's offense operates mostly under center... Peterman was the most "pro-ready" QB in the draft and is comfortable taking snaps under center, yet 53% (60/113) of all his preseason snaps were taken in the shotgun. If Taylor's healthy and starts in a week and a half, I doubt what we've seen in preseason really resembles what we see in week 1. And I'm sure Dennison will be capable of maximizing Taylor's skillsets. -

What have Woods and Watkins said that says Tyrod is lousy? And on top of that, should we really take what Watkins says as anything other than those comments of a jilted lover, spiteful over rejection? Really curious if you have these quotes calling Taylor lousy in your back pocket or not, 'cause I haven't seen 'em Yep. -

Yes, of course we do. That is assuming we'll be bad enough to draft really high in a great QB class. You think the veteran players think Taylor is lousy? What makes you think they think that? Because you think he is? I don't think there's really ever been an indication of that thought, actually, so this is a stretch... more than a stretch, actually. -

I wasn't trying to argue. No point in arguing with someone who thinks this team would suddenly be bad enough to be one of the 2 or 3 worst teams in NFL history because of one player. That's just really stupid. The Bills are likely to win at least a handful of games on the back of its defense alone. -

This is utterly ridiculous, right here. -

Really weird to hear this from you I don't give a crap who plays QB if this team can put it together and win. If it's Taylor, wonderful. If that's Peterman, awesome. One of the big issues here is just going to be with what all the team vets think. Even if Taylor sits out week #1 (which is possible) and Peterman goes out and plays well and the team gets a W (we're playing the Jets, so also very possible... maybe even likely), what is McDermott going to do for week 2 or when Taylor is healthy? McDermott actually painted himself into a bit of a corner when he flatly stated on Sunday "Taylor's the starter." Now if he's not given the job back when he's healthy, there might be a bit of an issue with the players. So Crusher, here's where you and I agree... for the team's sake I think you let Taylor play until he loses the job. If Taylor starts week 1 and by the 3rd or 4th game he's playing horribly, pull him and put the rookie in. That way you don't lose the team and if Peterman's as good as so many here think he is, maybe he can string together a bunch of Ws. What a tumultuous offseason this has been... -
You sound smart and like you have a healthy sense of self

As Hokie mentioned rather astutely earlier in this thread, it seems like they're making the QBs operate the plays in the positions they're least comfortable in. By my count, Taylor took 65% of all of his snaps in the preseason games under center. So just 35% of his snaps were in the shotgun where he's used to getting the ball. By contrast, Peterman took just 47% of his snaps under center and 53% of his snaps in the shotgun. I also thought it was interesting that I couldn't find Taylor handing the ball off after taking any of those shotgun snaps, but Peterman handed the ball off at least a couple times after getting the ball snapped to him in the shotgun. I think there's something to what Hokie said about having them do what they're uncomfortable with. That doesn't mean they won't go back when the season starts. -

No. You just have an incredibly short memory. Tuel actually looked good in the preseason for 2013. It's hilariously convenient for you (and others) to say dumb stuff like this because we can now look at Tuel and know he's not an NFL QB. -

Maybe, maybe not. Right now hindsight is 20/20 regarding Tuel. But he played well and looked good in his time in the preseason and a lot people were singin praises of Tuel back in 2013. -

And again, I suspect they're holding back all the plays in this offense that are suited for Taylor's style. And I suspect those are the ones the team has been practicing and executing in TC. We haven't seen Taylor roll out even once. You think those aren't in the plans? Whether beneficial or not, I don't think Dennison/McDermott really want to show the wrinkles in this offense that they'll primarily implement that they believe will make this team the most effective. If we start the season and all or most of what we see in terms of offensive playcalling (which has centered around 3 step drops with Taylor under center) is what we've seen with Taylor in the preseason, then I suspect we'll see Peterman sooner rather than later because an offense centered on a QB under center taking 3 step drops primarily won't really work for Taylor. He needs to get deeper in the pocket, for one thing. It isn't really utilizing a lot of his strengths, for another. Agreed. -

Jeff Tuel did that in his preseason, too. -

Yes, because preseason is the primary evaluation tool for the coaches. Not those hours and hours and hours of practices they've had in TC And it's equally funny that you say Taylor's been "failing bad all preseason" when he looked pretty good in the 1st preseason game. So really, this is all based on 2 preseason games, 8 drives, and 21 pass attempts?!?! Do you really not see how absolutely preposterous it is to assume that these preseason games are the make or break of the evaluation for Taylor? If Taylor were failing, it would have been in TC and McDermott would be benching him based primarily on that, not 8 drives and 21 pass attempts with a sieve of an OL and all against the 1st string defense, unlike Peterman, who's TD drive everyone raves about to end the half was against the Ravens' 2nd string D and courtesy of a really dumb ST penalty right after a 3 and out with 3 straight passes by our young QB. I honestly thought after the Ravens game McDermott might have used the game as an opportunity to start to talk his way out of Taylor solidly being the starter, but he didn't... he made possibly the strongest statement all summer about Taylor being the #1 QB on the team. That says something. That doesn't mean I don't think Taylor will be on a short leash when he comes back healthy. It means that fans who believe preseason is the primary or even significant evaluator of the QB position in particular are a bit naïve. -

And regardless, we'r Do you honestly think that's what I meant? If you do, I apologize. I didn't remotely mean to imply that the plays that they're running aren't plays that are in the same system of the offense they're going to put on the field week 1, merely that what we've seen is such a small fraction of that system that it can hardly be called the same system. Understand now? I think you just like picking stupid fights. Too funny coming from a guy who CONSTANTLY posts statements about Tyrod as fact when they're merely you're opinion. On a side note, with your recent dramatic increase in posts, recently, you seem almost giddy with excitement over the current situation with our QBs. Weird. -
The Titans looked crappy yesterday...

People who flip out about preseason are just ridiculous. Coaches evaluate more in TC practices than they do for these games for most players. Who cares? Less than 2 weeks! -
Didn't read whatever offended anybody, but I don't know why you'd root for a tank rather than a surprise season. I just think a lot of people don't expect a surprisingly good season so they console themselves with a terrible losing season by talking in jest about how terrible we'll be and by looking at all the great prospects we're likely to get in the draft next year. I'll be very upset with a losing season. But even I'll admit a losing season (especially a 4-12 or worse season) will be a LOT less painful than most other years simply because I think the future could look so bright as a result. But that doesn't mean I won't be rooting hard for 10-6 or better and playoffs! The football season is too short not to!

No. I mean we're seeing the most absolutely vanilla version of Dennison's offense that exists... like only a fraction of the variety of types of wrinkles he plans on putting in there. Not 2 different offenses. We're just seeing maybe 10% of the offense we're gonna see during the regular season. That's what I suspect, but we find out in less than 2 weeks. -

Doubt we're really seeing the system we're going to see week 1. -

Fig, you were a bigger TT "homer" than me. You were predicting a breakout year for Taylor. I'm surprised (and a little disappointed) you and so many others are honestly putting so much stock in preseason. One thing I've learned over the years... who cares about preseason?! I don't think we've seen much of the offense Dennison has in store for week 1. Start overreacting after week 1. Who really cares right now? -
