Ruth Bader Ginsberg has pancreatic cancer
Buffalo_Gal replied to TakeYouToTasker's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
So, I am curious... is there anything to prevent them from passing rules that put back the judicial filibuster with some sort of addendum that it takes 60 to get rid of it in the future, do the same with any other filibusters, and the same for not expanding the courts? And, could it be done in December IF the Republicans lose the Senate? -
Update (there is a whooooole lot more being covered by the Canadian press than local media): Not guilty plea entered on behalf of woman arrested in White House ricin case Pascale Ferrier will remain in custody at least until Monday A U.S. judge has entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of the woman suspected of sending ricin-laced envelopes from Canada to the White House and to several officials in Texas. Pascale Ferrier, 53, made a brief appearance in a Buffalo, N.Y., courtroom this afternoon after she was arrested over the weekend at the Peace Bridge border crossing between Fort Erie, Ont., and New York State. She faces a charge of threatening the president. U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder Jr. said since it is a criminal complaint there was no need for her to enter a plea during her brief court appearance today, but he entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf. </snip>

She's being arraigned in Buffalo sometime today. I could not find what time. Quebec woman identified as suspect in case of ricin letter mailed to White House - she's a doozy. She really hated Trump.

To release something "embarrassing." As you said, they go over his taxes with a fine tooth comb. Anything not kosher is kicked back and fined. However, with real estate, the depreciation can make for many years of zero tax paid on a personal return ... totally ignoring that the IRS ALWAYS gets there money. It may be delayed until sale, delayed a bit more in a 1031 exchange, but the IRS will always get their cash.

Trump to meet state attorneys general to discuss key U.S. tech liability shield U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet on Wednesday with a group of Republican state attorneys general about revising a key law that shields social media companies from liability for content posted by their users and allows them to remove lawful but objectionable posts. “Online censorship goes far beyond the issue of free speech, it’s also one of protecting consumers and ensuring they are informed of their rights and resources to fight back under the law,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said. “State attorneys general are on the front lines of this issue and President Trump wants to hear their perspectives.” </snip> -
Exclusive: Swedish space company halts new business helping China operate satellites Sweden’s state-owned space company, which provides ground stations that help fly Chinese spacecraft and transmit data, said on Monday it would no longer renew contracts with China or accept new Chinese business, because of changes in geopolitics. The Sweden Space Corporation (SSC) has had contracts allowing Beijing access to its antennas in Sweden, Chile and Australia since at least 2011. It told Reuters those contracts would not be renewed. “The geopolitical situation has changed since these contracts were signed in the early 2000s. We have to assess where we can do business and it’s harder for us to make that assessment regarding the Chinese market now,” Anni Bolenius, head of communications at SSC, told Reuters. </snip>

2020 Election is officially Trump vs Biden
Buffalo_Gal replied to transplantbillsfan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
“Even if given all the information that’s been put out there, all the facts — just pick an issue that the president has had his hands in — it doesn’t make a difference.” What exactly are those union heads receiving from the DNC? Rank-and-file union members snub Biden for Trump In some unions, especially the building trades, support for the president remains solid despite the efforts of labor leaders to convince members otherwise. Joe Biden has pitched himself to voters as a “union man,” a son of Scranton, Pa., who respects the dignity of work and will defend organized labor if he wins the White House. To rank-and-file members in some unions, especially the building trades, it doesn’t matter. They’re still firmly in Donald Trump’s camp. Labor leaders have worked for months to sell their members on Biden, hoping to avoid a repeat of 2016 when Donald Trump outperformed among union members and won the White House. But despite a bevy of national union endorsements for Biden and years of what leaders call attacks on organized labor from the Trump administration, local officials in critical battleground states said support for Trump remains solid. “We haven’t moved the needle here,” said Mike Knisley, executive secretary-treasurer with the Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council, who estimated that about half of his members voted for Trump in 2016 and will do so again. “Even if given all the information that’s been put out there, all the facts — just pick an issue that the president has had his hands in — it doesn’t make a difference.” </snip> -

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I think Sweden got is as close to “right” as possible. However, questioning an approach is not a bad thing. -

I think a lot of people doubted Sweden’s approach. People also doubted the lockdown approach. And, some of them were the same people. IMO, doubt, without concrete evidence one way or the other, is good. -

West Coast Under Fire
Buffalo_Gal replied to WEATHER DOT COM's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I think the lack of brush clearing is the poor forest management part. Texas has very little public forest land, I would think private owners would not allow ripe fire conditions (undergrowth) to accumulate. (This is just a guess, however, because as I said, I was surprised that Texas had so much forested land.) -

So, I did not believe it as I never think of Texas as particularly forested. So, I looked it up: California has 33 million acres of forest land (USDA) According to 2011 figures from the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA (which is usda)), there are 62.4 million acres of forests and woodlands in Texas. (VERY little is public land, only 675K acres) -

A Michigan resident’s apparent joke showing disdain for voting by mail is no laughing matter for one election official. The resident put a toilet on their lawn with a sign that says, “Place mail in ballots here.” Barb Byrum, the Democratic clerk of Ingham County, filed a complaint with police over the display, saying it could mislead people who aren’t familiar with the voting system. “It is a felony to take illegal possession of an absentee ballot,” Byrum said Friday. “Elections in this country are to be taken seriously and there are many people who are voting by mail for the first time this election,” she said. Police told the AP that the complaint is being investigated. </snip> -
