CJ Beathard looks like a stud compared to Allen.

Josh Allen was never fixed. Every QB with mechanical flaws who "fixes" them during the offseason almost always reverts back to their old ways once the bullets are flying. Jordan Palmer fixed Christian Hackenberg's mechanics once upon a time. How's he doing?

Why Derek Anderson should start the rest of the season...
jrober38 replied to Simon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm fine with Anderson starting while Allen is injured, but after that he needs to get back on the field. -
Someone needs to be fired over Mahomes right now.

I like QBR. Any way you slice it Allen has been junk this year. -
All I want is for the Bills to have competent Quarterback play from their starter. Allen isn't giving that to them.

Blaine Gabbert: ANALYSIS STRENGTHS Gabbert has prototypical size and excellent speed for the position. Shows the ability to make the right pre-snap reads. Possesses a quick release and has the arm strength to make all the throws. Well-balanced passer that rarely misses on short-to-intermediate throws. Extremely mobile to extend plays and fast enough to move the chains. Vocal leader and hard worker. WEAKNESSES Trusts his arm too much and puts the ball in harm's way too often. Does not show good touch on passes over the middle and needs to learn to take a little velocity off certain throws. Struggles to throw an accurate deep ball. Late feeling pressure at times which neutralizes his very good mobility. Will need to learn a pro style offense. That's pretty much the exact same scouting report we all read about Josh Allen. As I said, all the same pros and cons. Both are big, strong, mobile QBs with big arms who don't play the QB position well.

Deshaun Watson has been exponentially better than Josh Allen this year. He had a bad game yesterday against an elite defense, but over the course of the year he's averaging almost 300 yards per game passing, 8.3 YPA and a QB Rating of 90.8. If we had that type of QB play with our elite defense instead of the garbage we've had from Peterman and Allen, we'd likely be 4-2 or possibly 5-1 right now. -
Like what? What specific plays from yesterday suggest the game is slowing down for him?

You can't definitely say we'd be better off, but you can make a highly educated guess. Mahomes was an elite passer coming out of college. He needed to learn the NFL offense, but the ability to throw accurate passes all over the field was clearly there when evaluating him as a prospect. Allen was a mediocre QB in a terrible conference. He was a game manager in college who wasn't asked to do much. It's entirely fair to be critical of us passing on Mahomes for the same type of prospect as Allen. Mahomes looks amazing and Allen is hands down the worst starting QB in the league right now. Why do we need to tear down other QBs to make our QB not look as bad? We'd be in the heart of the playoff race with any of the guys you mentioned. -

He's the worst starter in the league and it's not close. There are probably 25 backups I'd take over him at this point. -
Goff was an elite college football player who put up enormous numbers in the Pac-12. Unless Sean McVay is coming through the door as our coach, I don't think this comparison makes any sense. Guys like EJ Manuel, Blaine Gabbert, Kyle Boller, Christian Hackenberg are better comparisons. Big, strong, mobile QBs with good intangibles who struggled to play QB.

When was the last time a total project like Allen worked out? The cause for impatience is the fact that guys like Josh Allen never work out in the NFL.
-
The upcoming QB class looks pretty terrible. Looks like a bunch of 2nd/3rd round type guys with minimal upside. 2020 and 2021 should be absolutely loaded.
-
He's also got a rock bottom floor. If Allen continues to look lost throughout the rest of the season, it might make sense to fold our hand vs double down and inevitably lose 2 years down the road. I'm not saying the Bills are going to cut Josh Allen, but if there's no improvement between now and the end of the season you have to bring in a serious Plan B next year. You can't go all in on a guy who has looked this bad and just hope and pray he gets better.

Our passing offense is historically bad. There hasn't been a passing offense that's averaged close to 123 yards per game since the 2009 Cleveland Browns. Prior to that it's the 2005 49ers. We can't throw the football like anyone else in the NFL.
-
Locker was a better player. He was a decent football player who was undone by his accuracy, but he understood how to play the game. Allen looks a lot like Blaine Gabbert. Same pros and cons.

I'm not trying to be a guru. I'm simply explaining that the history of the NFL from the past 25 years says that Josh Allen is probably going to be a bust. Watch the Pack game? The one where we got shutout and he threw 2 awful interceptions? Yesterday he showed nothing aside from one completion for 39 yards that any NFL QB should be expected to complete. He's not learning anything. He's been horrible since the first half of the Minnesota game. He looks like an over matched 3rd string QB. We have no passing offense with him on the field. He holds the ball too long, looks to run too fast, and he just generally does nothing to generate positive offense and points on the board. He makes the same mistakes week in and week out.

I totally agree. Allen has shown me nothing that suggests he's going to be a successful NFL QB. He was a no body in high school, a mediocre prospect at JUCO, and a middle of the road QB in the Mountain West Conference. He's a big, strong, mobile, smart guy who unfortunately has very little skill when it comes to actually playing quarterback and passing the football. He's not a natural passer, and he's shown next to nothing that suggests he can consistently read a defense. If his primary read isn't open, his instinct is to run. When there's pressure around him, his eyes consistently drop which is a critical flaw with QBs. The issue is that I think McDermott is actually a really good coach. What he's done with the defense has been outstanding, and I think he's good at identifying problems on tape and correcting them in practice. The OL has been getting better despite featuring hardly any talent, and the defense looks like one of the best units in the league despite featuring limited high end talent. The problem is in the front office and particularly with the decisions they've made at QB. Going into this season with only Peterman and Allen on the roster was inexcusable. It's been a complete disaster through 6 weeks. Peterman can't play, and Allen has looked lost out there. As all the scouting reports said, he needed at least a year or two on the bench learning before he'd have to play, and we had him on the field halfway through the first game. They've shown that they don't know what a good QB looks like, and as you said why would you let these guys have another shot at picking another guy?
-
This. For every Aikman or Goff, there are at least 5 guys who went on to be complete busts. Allen might be Aikman or Goff, or he might be Paxton Lynch, Johnny Manziel, EJ Manuel, Robert Griffin, Brandon Weeden, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Tim Tebow, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, Jamarcus Russel, Brady Quinn, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jason Campbell, JP Losman, Kyle Boller, Byron Leftwich, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Patrick Ramsey, Tim Couch, Akili Smith.... You get the idea.

If things don't improve between now and week 17 they might not have a choice. This is shaping up to be a similar situation to how we handled EJ Manuel. He had a mediocre rookie season and faded badly down the stretch. Instead of bringing in competition, we went "all in" on EJ, trading the farm for Sammy Watkins. 4 weeks into the next season he was benched for Kyle Orton. If Allen stays as is, they can't go all in on him the same way Whaley went all in on EJ. They definitely need to bring in a real plan B who can actually challenge for the starting gig.

Things I trust more than "The Process"
jrober38 replied to damj's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm torn. The team plays hard, and they over achieved last year. No one expected them to make the playoffs. This year (since halftime of the Chargers game), the Bills look like they might have the best defense in the NFL. The pieces they brought in are producing and the defense is truly elite. The problem is every decision they've made at the QB position. -
The bar for QB play on this board can't be any lower. Allen was awful yesterday. He looks completely lost out there for long stretches of the games.
