Sean McDermott is Out of Answers

The fact that we have to start Nate Peterman again, and didn't cut him a month ago is a complete embarrassment. Never have I seen a QB situation this poorly managed by an NFL franchise. It's unbelievable that they needed to keep the guy around even though he'd failed so miserably, and now face what will likely be a national embarrassment on Sunday. It's more likely than not that Peterman will be a complete train wreck against the Bears D, and they might be playing Matt Barkley at some point during the game. It's unbelievable how Plan A went so wrong, Plan B wasn't ready and then got injured, Plan C got injured, and they're now back to playing Plan A without any viable backup option behind him. -

No. I don't. We're scoring 10.7 PPG. Production this bad hasn't been seen in the NFL for 20 years and I don't see how the HC doesn't bear significant blame for that level of dysfunction. I agree that they won't fire him, but they should. McDermott doesn't get the offensive side of the football and isn't going to be the coach to develop a QB like Josh Allen. I think they let him do his thing this offseason, they spend some money and give him and Allen another year, and 12 months from now we're all talking about who our next coach and QB will be. -

Ownership might not get someone better, but if the guy we have doesn't have it, what's the harm in letting them try? Sean McDermott doesn't get offense. His offense scored 18 PPG last year and is now chugging along at a 10.7 PPG mark, with four of our eight games resulting in us having scored less than 7 points. Let that sink in. McDermott's team has failed to score 7 points in half the games they've taken the field this year. This coach has shown nothing that suggests he understands modern offense or gets the math behind particular situations when he should go for it and not punt. We're still playing field position and trying to win close games. This is Dick Jauron's regime all over again. Giving McDermott more time isn't going to make him miraculously field a high scoring offense. He's clearly shown he doesn't get it, and can't evaluate talent. Both of his Offensive Coordinator hires have been awful. There is absolutely no reason to give him more time to figure things out and potentially hire a 3rd OC in 3 years. He's a good defensive coordinator who doesn't seem cut out to coaching a full team. -

The plan isn't working. No chance you can argue that they went into this season expecting this offense to be the worst the NFL has seen in 20 years. They completely mismanaged the QB spot, have an offensive line that can't block the type of runs McCoy thrives on, and seem to have a thing for wide receivers who lack athleticism and can't stretch the field. Nothing these guys have done on the offensive side of the ball has worked. They don't know what a decent QB looks like, and they don't seem to have a plan at WR, having just taken a bunch of shots on guys at that position who can't play, burning cap space along the way. I get that you guys want to be patient, but what about this regime suggests that they're going to turn this around. They've shown nothing that suggests they can coach offense or identify talent on that side of the ball, and they've shown several times that they're careless with draft picks, frequently trading them away. We have a conservative, defense first coach who doesn't fit where the NFL is going. That side of the football is a complete debacle that will take years to correct. -

I don't think that matters. We need a progressive offensive mind leading the team, and just ask him to keep Leslie Frazier as DC so there's no turnover on that side of the ball. We need a coach capable of fielding a modern NFL offense. -

Why wait though? Based on the results over the past 25 games, why would anyone with a brain in their head entrust Beane and McDermott to fix the offense? -

The offense is a disaster. Every decision this team has made with McDermott as HC on that side of the ball has been a terrible one. -

I assume other teams than just the Bills are rebuilding. Hard to imagine anyone else having as few players on the roster who were draft 3 or more years ago. What we're doing seems to be uncommon...... -

We got into this situation by over paying free agents. To get anyone to come here we'll have to do the same thing all over again. -

That was McDermott's choice. -

I guess you'd have to believe this to have any faith in McDermott as a HC. -
You don't need a top 5 pick to draft a blue chip player.

I just find it interesting how no one seems to think he's responsible for this mess. It's unfathomable to me how so many other people are getting scapegoated ahead of the HC who is almost entirely responsible for putting us in this mess. This is a Chip Kelly/Josh McDaniels situation all over again. Young, arrogant coach who gutted the roster of NFL talent so he can have his guys, and the result is arguably the worst roster in the league and the worst offense the league has seen in 20 years. We'd be smart to fire McDermott this year and restart with a new HC who might be able to better utilize all our draft picks. -

So what? Next year's free agency class is horrendous. There's nothing available at WR and next to nothing on the OL. This team will get better if they start drafting quality offensive players. They can't rely on free agency to fix their problems. -

100%. We have the wrong Head Coach, who has hired the wrong Offensive Coordinators, and drafted the wrong QB, and put him in a situation where he can't be successful. A year from now I think McDermott is close to getting fired. I think they'll spend money on the offense, and we'll still be puttering along with Allen at QB in an offense that doesn't score points. McDermott doesn't know offense. That's painfully obvious at this point. You can't have a HC in today's NFL who is completely inept on that side of the football when scoring points is so important. -

Continued improvement? The team has imploded this year. He inherited a decent team from Rex Ryan, and managed to go 9-7 last year. Now we're well on our way to a top 5 pick. No offense, but the team is rapidly moving in the wrong direction... -

Totally agree. How much improvement can we reasonably expect in one offseason? We're currently scoring under 11 PPG. Does anyone really expect that number to move into the 20s, and essentially double in one year? Probably not. The Bills need to replace 8, maybe 9 players on offense. No chance that's happening in one year. -

No. He doesn't need to be a Hall of Famer. I just don't think we should be committing ourselves to a HC who has fielded nothing but horrendous offenses. A guy who has shown no ability to evaluate QBs. A guy who insists on trading talent away so he can have guys who fit his culture, even if they can't perform on the field. A guy whose football team is now featuring the worst offense the NFL has seen in 20 years. What are we doing here? The NFL is about scoring points and we're still playing games not to lose, which never works out. McDermott is trying to win games 14-13 when the top teams in the NFL are doing the opposite, trying to win shootouts 35-30. Our whole approach is out of date and it's blatantly obvious on the field that McDermott's coaching philosophy doesn't lineup with what's happening in the modern NFL. This is 100% McDermott and Beane's choice. They're the ones who got rid of everyone we drafted except 3 guys prior to the 2017 season. -

What about their management of the offense suggests they deserve more time? Is it their management of the offense, or the fact that this is the worst offense the NFL has seen in 20 years at a time when the rules are set up to encourage scoring? -

McDermott is over matched as a Head Coach. He's a good coordinator, but through 1.5 years he's shown zero understanding of what an NFL QB looks like, forcing Peterman on the field for Taylor last year, drafting Allen, making Peterman the starter and trading McCarron away for a bag of footballs. Additionally, his coordinator hires have been suspect. Rick Dennison was terrible and Brian Daboll hasn't been much better. We constantly give away talent so that McDermott can bring in his guys and the result is that the offense is now featuring replacement level talent at most positions on offense. People want to blame a lot of people for the offense's woes and rarely do I see McDermott's name mentioned. Right now I'm putting this all on him. This is 100% HIS TEAM and the fact that we have the worst offense in the NFL over the past 20 years is completely unacceptable. -
Agreed. Since McDermott has been HC he's made numerous terrible decisions on the offensive side of the football. There's little evidence he knows how to evaluate QBs or WRs or even offensive linemen. McDermott is Jauron 2.0. A super conservative HC whose defenses play hard but is constantly plagued by inept offense.

Not a chance. No NFL team ever trades for anyone in their mid 30s in the last year of their contract.

No one is trading anything for Kyle Williams or Lorenzo Alexander.
