Notable Offensive Moves by McDermott

100%. Our coach values culture over strategy. He said it himself. I don't want a guy who thinks that orchestrating the draft that is supposed to fix the offense. We need a coach who values the Xs and Os, like every other successful NFL coach who has a good offense. -

Exactly. If there was ever a time to fire a HC now is the time. The defense is fine, so hire a HC who knows offense and keep Leslie Frazer to run the defense and keep that side of the ball as is. The key is to bring in someone who actually knows something about offense and how to field a team that can score more than 10 points a game. -

Exactly. We get it. Why doesn't our head coach. McDermott wanted Peterman on the field last year, and he named him the starter this year. We have the guy running our offense who won the offseason competition, and the result is the worst offense in modern NFL history. McDermott is a major problem. -

Sammy Watkins is still easily the best WR we'd have on our roster. He's not a #1 in KC, but he would be for half the teams in the NFL. Zay Jones is not a #2. He's a #4/#5 guy on half the teams in the NFL. He's slow, struggles against man coverage, and offers nothing on special teams. He's only on the field because we don't have anything better. Benjamin was a terrible trade. A big slow receiver coming out of college who hadn't produced since his rookie season and can't separate. The moves they've made on the OL, and at WR, have been awful. We're scoring 10.6 PPG because those two spots are so bad relative to the rest of the league. -

I don't necessarily see those things as positives given who is making the decisions. We have a bunch of cap. Who cares? There are 10 teams in the NFL with more than $60 mil in cap space. The top 5 teams are all in similar cap situations to ours, and they all have the same needs for OL and WR help. Having draft picks is nice, but if this regime has shown anything it's that they don't value them, often trading them away for picks or players so they can get their guy, often paying too much along the way. All of the guys they've singled out through trades simply have not performed, and the list of guys they've added at WR has been particularly disturbing. This regime has made it clear they value character over talent. McDermott preaches culture, and getting things going the right way, and the result is that we have one of the least athletic offenses in the league. Our OL can't block a screen pass, and our WRs can do nothing but run crossing routes because they're devoid of speed. There's nothing about our approach to free agents or the draft that suggests we have any edge on the competition. We're still drafting the old school way and don't seem to be using any advanced analytics on the offensive side of the ball which is a huge problem in my eyes. -

Why would you expect that to happen when looking at their track record for roster moves on the offensive side of the ball? -

I don't think it's whining to post all the notable moves this regime has done on the offensive side of the ball. When you read this list, and see who these guys targeted through trades, and who they traded up for in the draft, it isn't all that surprising we have the worst offense the NFL has seen in 20 years. -

No I'm talking about McDermott. He was fully in charge of the 2017 draft. Beane wasn't even here yet. This is McDermott's show. -

The NFL now is drastically different than it was 4 years ago. The current NFL's rules, and their attempt to eliminate big hits and call more holding and PI calls makes it incredibly easy to score points. The current NFL is about scoring points because that's what the rules encourage. You're encouraged to throw the ball, because in addition to your expected gain (YPA) being greater than your average run (YPC), there are additional penalties baked in (roughing the passer, defensive holding, defensive PI) which making passing a much more lucrative option than running the ball. I'm not saying the run is useless, but I am saying that if you can't pass the football extremely well in 2018 you probably won't be very successful. Right now we have the worst offense in at least 20 years and the worst passing game in the league. Our coach is completely ignoring rule changes and basic probabilities by wanting to keep playing defense first, trying to win the field position battle and limit turnovers on offense. What we do philosophically is nothing like what you see from any of the top teams around the league. -

I don't need to know any of these things. I've seen enough to know that McDermott and Beane know nothing about offense and I want a new HC and GM in charge making those picks. -

I'd rather those picks get used by someone who actually knows something about modern NFL offensive strategy.- 145 replies

Bills Offensive Moves with McDermott as HC. - trade Sammy Watkins for 2nd round pick - signed Vlad Ducasse, Patrick DiMarco & Andre Holmes - don't pick Mahomes or Watson, trade out of the #10 spot - trade up for Zay Jones - draft Dion Dawkins - sign Anquan Boldin - trade 3rd round pick for Kelvin Benjamin - bench Tyrod Taylor so Nate Peterman can play - trade Cordy Glenn and a 1st round pick to move up in the draft - trade Tyrod Taylor - sign Chris Ivory - trade 1st rounder and two 2nds for Josh Allen - sign Jeremy Kerley - trade for Cory Coleman - cut Cory Coleman - start Nate Peterman as QB1 - trade AJ McCarron for 5th round pick - sign Derek Anderson - sign Terrell Pryor How has McDermott earned another year to try and fix the offense? This is their OL, their group of QBs, their RBs, and their WRs, and the offense is scoring 10.6 PPG.

Right. He's 19-6 as a Head Coach. Our dinosaur is 11-14. What are we talking about here?
-
McDermott's philosophical approach to football is 20 years past its expiry date.
-
It's all philosophy. McDermott wants to win games 17-13. Payton and McVay want to drop 40 points every week. They play fast, they value possessions and hate punting. They understand the odds behind certain situations and they trust the math. Our coach likes to punt on 4th and short from the opponents 40 yard line because he cares about the weather, wants to dominate the line of scrimmage and play field position. Our coach can't compete with top NFL minds like Payton, McVay, Reid and Belichick. If we played the Rams we'd lose by 50. I would give anything to have Sean McVay as the Bills Head Coach.

I disagree. They traded for Benjamin and traded up to draft Zay Jones. I think they thought those guys would actually be good receivers considering this regime hand picked them. They signed Kerley, traded for Coleman, and brought in a bunch of young guys to camp hoping they'd fill out the depth chart. Unfortunately not a single one of those guys was good enough to cut it. Kerley was cut, Coleman was waived, and none of the young guys have done anything. The offense is bad because the players they've brought in are not as good as the players they insisted they had to replace. They got rid of the guys they didn't want, and replaced them with worse players. I don't think that was intentional.
-
Right. They fired their defensive minded HC and hired an innovative offensive guy to replace him. We should do the same.
-
If any of this was true, you wouldn't see the same teams drafting in the top 10 pretty much every year. You can find good players anywhere in the first round. Tanking for a DT or DE or whatever we pick doesn't make any sense. This team thought they'd be better this year. I'd guarantee they thought the offense would be improved over what Taylor allowed them to do last year. I get that doesn't fit your narrative, but I don't think there's any actual proof to argue that they are tanking. I think they expected to be winning.
-
Agreed. I would bet any amount of money that prior to this year they thought they'd improve off their 9-7 finish a year ago. They fired the OC because they wanted to get better on O. They game Lotuleilei a boat load of money because they wanted to shore up the run D. They traded up for Edmunds because they wanted to shore up and upgrade the LB position. Nothing about their offseason suggested they were tanking.
-
I'm watching the Saints-Rams game and a Sean McDermott team isn't competing with either of these teams anytime soon. There are flashy, high octane offenses that score at will because they're aggressive. They play to win games by scoring 40+ points similar to what college teams do. We are years away from being able to field a roster capable of hanging with either of these teams. It's unbelievable how bad we are on offense compared to these teams.
-
We're now 11-15 with McDermott has HC, counting playoffs. In those 25 games, our net point differential is -202 points, or 8.1 PPG. In those 25 games, we've won two games by 14 or more points, and lost eight games by 14 or more points. We've lost seven games by 20 or more points. This team has been terrible with McDermott as HC. The offense has been laughably bad and we get blown out all the time. No I don't, but I'm convinced McDermott isn't a good HC so might as well give it a shot. Maybe they'll get lucky.
