Singletary finishes with EIGHT rushing attempts
Nihilarian replied to wiseman3's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What my earlier post pointed out was that Singletary was getting 7.0 yards per carry on his three rushes in the first half! So if the Browns were stacking the box it wasn't effective against "Motor"! 19 passes vs 7 rushes in that first half. This against the #2 sack leader in the NFL with the Browns being #7 defense in passing yards allowed. Brian Daboll ran his offense "his way" without any consideration to what he was facing. So who is the failure in this game? The 2nd year QB with 19 games under his belt or the 6 year OC who is acting like a rookie who doesn't know how to set up an offense against a specific opponent. Its really kinda sad that first year HC who is one year removed from the Browns RB coach out foxed Brian Deboll. The 2-6 Browns beat the 6-2 Buffalo Bills because a moron is running the Bills offense. Its like Nathaniel Hackett never left! -
Singletary finishes with EIGHT rushing attempts

This is exactly right and instead of looking at the entire game lets look at the first half. Going back to the play by play in the Bills first series Singletary had one carry off RG for 4 yards. The Bills second series it was DeMarco off RG for 2 yards, Gore off RG for 4 yards. Third series, Singletary off RG for 9 yards, next play Gore off RG for 3 yards first down. Allen run first down, Allen pass. Singletary off left tackle for 8 yards, Gore RT for 2 yards. This series resulted in a rush TD by Allen. Fourth series it was all Allen with 10 passes and one run, no RB runs at all. FG no good near end of first half. I think Daboll is full of crap. 19 passes vs 7 rushes in the first half. Singletary 3 rushes for 21 yards. 7.0 YPC doesn't look like a stacked box was effective against Singletary. The OC simply went pass happy while neglecting the run. No excuse for this! When you look at the actual runs by the running backs it was Singletary 8 carries, Gore 5 carries, DeMarco 1 carry. 14 called rushes by the Bills RBs vs 41 passes! To me, it just makes no sense at all to make that young, inexperienced QB carry the offense all game by throwing it 40+ times. Its what losing teams with top QBs do all the time. After watching Singletary against the Redskins he looks to be a special RB that can be the star player on offense, so why not make him the focal point instead? -
I get that running a scheme on game day is like playing a Grand masters chess match. So when an OC sees the opponent stacking the box like they do to stop the run. Then why not spread the formation out with 3 to 5 wideouts instead of running a tight formation or even an elephant/goal line offense? This causes so many mismatches as suddenly the defense must go nickle or dime depending. And when they do that one missed tackle means its off to the races. Chan Gailey made a living out of running out of a spread 4-5 wide shotgun formation with Spiller. Or, if the OC is obstinate about a tight formation, when running it have three offensive tackles on the line to force power some holes? Its what Cam Cameron used to do with the Ravens run game and opponents had no answer for it usually. Both sides knew they were going to run it and they couldn't stop it... also makes for some great play action. Thanks. What really frustrates me about the current offense is that it looks like this OC doesn't look at whats going on with the opposing defense he is facing. It's almost like he is the opposite of his mentor in Bill Bilichick, who endlessly studies opponents tendencies and film. The stats show that the Browns have the #7 defense in passing yards along with #2 player in the NFL in sacks with 10.0 in Miles Garrett. So, why on gods green earth would you have your young, inexperienced QB throw the ball 41 times against that defense. Its like he wants the QB thrown into the hottest fire he can find. Meanwhile, this same Browns defense was 27th against the run while being 28th in being yards per carry averaged against them. I just don't get it. You would think that any other OC would find a way to run every run play imaginable against the Browns while using the the full cast of RBs! It doesn't need to be Gore up the middle all game either. In any event, if Hauschka makes the 37 yarder, and the 53, its a 22-19 win.

It makes me think that this scheme would be best with a game manager at QB. But then, what happens with that QB when the team gets behind and the OC goes pass happy again? Last weeks offense against Washington when the Bills got the lead is to run more and pass less to the tune of 39 rushing attempts for 122 yards vs 14 of 20 passes for 146 yards. "Perfection" as the offense worked Singletary 20 rushes for 95 yards, a 4.8 YPC avg. 3 passes for 45 yards. This week against the Browns the Bills don't get the lead and the OC goes pass happy while forgetting the run game. Singletary only 8 rushes for 42 yards, a 5.3 YPC avg which was almost criminal with a better YPC avg. Allen is doing exactly what this HC wants him to do in limiting turnovers while throttling back Allen's gunslinger style. Daboll calls plays like he has an elite QB behind center and not a 2nd year, young, inexperienced still developing QB. Plus he throws out a game plan that works when the team gets behind in points in any amount. He did this most of last season when the team got behind on the scoreboard too. When you look at Brian Daboll's history in the NFL you realize there is a real reason why he has never fielded a passing offense better then 23rd in passing yards 6 yrs as an NFL OC with 4 different teams. I think McD hired Daboll thinking he was getting another Bill O'Brian (who can make almost any QB look good) and instead hired a Nathaniel Hackett who needs an experienced, veteran QB to run his plays. Think Orton. If this team with a "going pass happy offense" when the Bills don't get a lead...this team might not win another game. Dolphins, Denver, Dallas, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, New England, NY Jets. After last weeks game i thought McD had a talk with Daboll and now realize he didn't. This OC needs to go!

The good Buffalo Bills OC was with us last week with more runs vs passes... and this week just like last year as soon as the Bills lose the lead this jackass of an OC calls 41 passes vs 8 runs for Singletary!! This, against the #2 sacker in the NFL and meanwhile the Browns were one of the worst run defenses in the NFL...

8 rushes for 42 yards @ 5.3 yards a carry Vs 41 pass attempts is plain outright stupid! -
Singletary finishes with EIGHT rushing attempts

I figured this would happen as soon as the Browns got the lead and if it were the other way around we might have seen the Singletary of last week. 20 carries for 95 yards, 3 receptions for 45 yards. Daboll did this all last season when the opponent got the lead...he goes pass happy with a young, inexperienced QB... against a defense this week with the #2 in the NFL sack leader! -
Amazing how the National Press Ignores the Bills
Nihilarian replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
All well said. The most exciting story of the season so far was that Dawson Knox run after the catch to the mainstream media. Otherwise, meh. Perhaps should the Bills win on turkey day, beat the Patriots, or Ravens they will look at Buffalo differently. Until then, squeaking out wins over bad teams isn't doing them any favors. -

Nihilarian replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The answer is an easy one as in who have the 6-2 Bills beaten? Combined 9-42. None were easy wins. The 1-7 NY Jets 17-16 The 1-7 Miami Dolphins 31-21...who showed the world how to run on the Bills The 0-8 Cincinnati Bengals 21-17 The 2-7 NY Giants 28-14 The 4-5 Tennessee Titans 14-7 the 1-8 Washington Redskins 24-9 The next three games should be cake @ 2-6 Cleveland, @ 1-7 Miami, 3-6 Denver. Will they be cake... Or will this years Bills play down to their competition? No game is a given win. Then @ Dallas, Baltimore, @ Pittsburgh, @ New England, NY Jets. Year end record is anybody's guess. -
Daboll is an excellent play caller
Nihilarian replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
While Lamar Jackson (6'2'' 212) is currently tearing it up as he is the teams leading rusher too along with almost 2000 passing yards 12 TDs, 5 INTs. The 2019 Ravens are 6-2 with the #1 offense in the NFL in points, #2 in yards. But, didn't we see this sorta thing with RG3 (6'2'' 213)and the 2012 Washington Redskins and he was the rage of the NFL...until he was injured. Guess who is backing up Jackson at Baltimore? Yea, RG3. I'm not wishing anything on anyone. Just saying I don't think its a smart move to have your teams starting QB to run so much...ask Cam Newton. -
Simple poll. Is Josh Allen improving as a passer?
Nihilarian replied to Ramza86's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not every QB develops at the same pace as there are so many variables. Josh Allen didn't play in a big time football program in college nor was he developed under an offensive genius in the NFL. Allen didn't play at USC or UCLA in a scheme that had good to really great players around him as every player that had touched the football at Wyoming in 2016 was gone in 2017. His final season he had to deal with offensive players just learning their jobs. Plus he was in an NFL style deep passing scheme that didn't have a lot of short passes like Mayfield, Darnold or Rosen had to pad his completion percentage. Josh Allen was touted as being a project developmental project and unlike those other three wasn't as polished or NFL ready to start. He was supposed to sit and learn for a season. The problem was the QB this offensive regime had picked to be the 2018 starting QB was Nathan Peterman...how did that turn out? What does that alone tell you about the mentality of the Bills offensive coaches? Allen was thrown into the fire the first game after the Bills brain trust giving Peterman all the first team reps all off season. This tells me that Allen's offensive coaches pretty much had their proverbial heads up their posterior! Patrick Mahomes was able to sit, learn and develop for a YEAR behind a #1 overall pick at QB in Alex Smith and taught and developed by an NFL offensive genius in Andy Reid. Like comparing apples to tables. Watson is a different story but his HC was an NFC offensive mind with a New England Patriots background...you didn't see attempting to start Nathan Peterman. Bill O'Brian fielded winning teams with Fitz, Hoyer, Osweiler, Tom Savage at QB Right now there is no question that Josh Allen is better then Baker Mayfield who is graded as the worst starting QB in the NFL. Rosen isn't even a starter and Darnold is 1-4 and playing on a team that was touted to contend for the AFC East division. 1-7 The NFL isn't easy as the past is filled with so many failed first round QB's. Allen is a young and up and coming superstar being led by an OC who has never fielded an offense better then 20th in his six seasons, 4 NFL teams. In actuality, it's Allen who's making Daboll look like a viable NFL OC. -

This last game was a perfect example on how to develop a young, inexperienced QB by running more and passing less, 20 pass attempts vs 39 rush attempts. Some Bills fans don't like it and say its Jauron ball. Too bad, as this is how you develop a QB into an elite passer. Don't force that QB to carry the offense and instead allow him to help win the game! -
Daboll is an excellent play caller
Nihilarian replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The only good thing that the Redskins defense had going for them was a very, very good defensive line. So, rather then dump on the Bills O line, I gotta wonder how many times do you continue to run Frank Gore up the middle before you realize he isn't going to get it done. When you already know that the strongest part of that Washington defense was the line and the LBers, DBs aren't that good...why run straight into the teeth? That first quarter drive that had the Bills on the Washington 2 yard line resulted in a sack for -6 yards on first down. Then on 2nd down and 8 the Bills lost 8 yards on a pass. Then on 3rd and 16 there was an aborted snap which lost another 8 yards. So now the Bills are forced into a FG at the Washington 24 yard line. Many posters here cited the Bills OC as getting "cute" with the play calls! Looking at that 2nd quarter Bills drive from the Redskins one yard line Daboll called 3x straight up the middle runs with Gore that went nowhere! Where was the innovation? Where was the elite play calling that Eric Wood was touting? This was Nathaniel Hackett all over again. Why didn't Daboll run Singletary more against the Eagles with Gore averaging 3.8 YPC and Singletary 6.8? Well, in all probability judging from the Bills presser McD gave Daboll a swift kick and told him to run the rookie more against Washington. Still, Gore got 11 carries...for 15 yards a 1.4 Yard Per Carry average against the Redskins. NOW, this last game was against a bad team, bad on defense and bad on offense ...also starting a rookie QB that even both sets of Redskins HCs stated wasn't ready to start. Yet Skins RB Adrian Peterson had 108 yards on 18 carries a 6.0 YPC avg. Think about what would have happened had the Bills not gotten a lead in the this game? Most likely the Bills OC has Josh Allen throwing more and running Singletary less. The Bills are facing another bad team with both their defense and offense in the 20s and the #1 overall pick Baker Mayfield is currently grading as the worst starting QB in the league. Yet, this Browns team found the wherewithal to beat the Baltimore Ravens 40-25 (a Ravens team who just beat the unbeaten Patriots) mostly with Nick Chubbs legs, 20 carries for 165 yards, 3 TDs, an 8.3 YPC AVG. While the Bills might have some decent red zone efficiency ...the Bills offense still ranks 22nd in points for, 23rd in yards and 26th in passing yards. This last game was exactly how the offense should be working regardless of the score. Run the hot hand at RB to carry the offense and allow Josh Allen help win the game while not forcing him to be the hero. Lets see what happens now. -
THE ROCKPILE REVIEW - “Bottom Feeding”
Nihilarian replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Two things struck me. The Redskins QB wasn't very good and like the Washington coaches stated, he really wasn't ready to start. while he didn't turn it over he did have a QBR of 31.9. Stating that, I wonder that if the Bills had faced a better QB would they have done as well? The other thing is that the only good thing that the Redskins defense had going for them was a really, really very good defensive line. It has me thinking is it the coaching or does this team want to play down to the competition they are facing or both? Final note, Baker Mayfield is currently grading as the worst starting QB in the league. Yet, this Browns team found the wherewithal to beat the Baltimore Ravens 40-25 mostly with Nick Chubbs legs, 20 carries for 165 yards, 3 TDs, an 8.3 YPC AVG. Knowing that has started to give me nightmares about the Bills defense! -
The way I look at it is that the Bills are exceedingly lucky that the schedule is so weak so that QB Josh Allen has a better chance to learn his craft and develop into that elite QB we all want. Against Wash, 14 of 20 for 160, 1 TD, 1 rushing TD. QBR 110.4...no turnovers. no designed QB runs either. Against Philly, 16 of 34 for 169 yards, 2 TDs. QBR 81.6 8 rushes for 45 yards. 3 fumbles, 1 lost. Allen was the leading rusher in this game. sacked 4 times. 8 penalties for 57 yards. Against Miami, 16 of 26 for 202, 2 TDs. QBR 111.4. 9 penalties for 83 yards. 2 penalties for 20 yards. No INTs the last three games. Clearly Allen had his worst game against the Patriots. He is clearly improving as the offensive scheme allows and against the Redskins it showed that if you run the ball more than throwing it (20 pass attempts vs 39 rush attempts) it works very well. What do we know so far, the Bills #3 overall defense is weak against the run as Miami exposed flaws in the scheme. While being #3 in passing yards, #2 in passing TDs. They are 20th in rush yards allowed and 24th in rush TDs allowed. The Bills defensive line has some issues. Although Josh Allen has only been sacked 21 times so far, the Bills offensive line isn't as good as first perceived. They were manhandled by the Eagles and really didn't far so well against the Redskins on the goal line or up the middle with Gore. The Bills run defense did look better in the second half against Washington but that might be because they were passing more to catch up and simply didn't run Peterson much in the 3rd, 4th quarters. Time will tell against the Browns as RB Nick Chubb is 4th overall in rushing. The thing is, like the Eagles, this 2-6 Cleveland Browns team beat the Baltimore Ravens 40-25 in week four. The Browns have the talent to be world beaters and yet are sucking big! Baker Nayfield the #1 overall pick is at 58.7 completion percent with 7 TDs, 12 INTs, a QBR of 38.2. If the Bills can get the lead and force the Browns to pass they have a really good chance to win this game. They aren't very good against the run either so Buffalo would be smart to run Gore, Singletary as much as they can.
-
There are some positive things I want to comment about that happened this game! ONLY two penalties for 20 yards the ENTIRE game!! I have been complaining that this team has averaged 8.5 penalties a game. This was huge!! NOT having Josh Allen run a designed QB run play. No turnovers or fumbles by the QB. This is another smart thing to do to help keep the QB upright and gaining confidence. Using RB Devin Singletary like he should be used, 20 carries for 95 yards a 4.8 YPC AVG, 1 TD. 3 receptions for 45 yards
-
I just hope they aren't able to put it all together against Buffalo... They were able beat the Ravens 40-25 @ Baltimore with RB Chubb going 20 for 165, 3 TDs and this against a very good run defense team.
-
To the OP. Don't even give a second thought to those Bills fans who always want to see the brighter side in everything and complain that you bring up valid points about the problems with the team. Speak your mind man and keep up the good work. Its all about the truth and facts. This so called elite Bills defense shouldn't be allowing an aged RB in Adrian Peterson 108 yards on 18 rushes to the tune of 6.0 yards per carry. This from a team that was 1-7 and starting a rookie QB that their own coaching staff stated wasn't really ready to start. The Redskins were 31st on offense and 20th in defense. The Bills should have dominated in every facet. The 2-6 Cleveland Browns, the 1-7 Miami Dolphins, the 3-6 Denver Broncos are the next three opponents and these should be easy wins. They won't be because this team has problems. Problems with the play calling. Problems stopping the run. Problems with the team playing down to bad teams and just squeaking by for some reason. Problems in seeing which RB has the hot hand and going with that player. By the Cowboys game on Nov 28th we Bills fans honestly don't know if the team will be 9-2 or 6-5? With the #3 overall defense and a stout run game this team should win the next three.
-
Loved watching this game! That 49er defense is what kept them in games and made them look so good...kinda like this years Patriots...until tonight! After this weeks bye, the Patriots play the 5-4 Eagles, the division leading 4-3 Cowboys, the division leading 6-3 Texans, the division leading 6-3 Chiefs, 0-8 Cincy, 6-2 Buffalo. By week 16 it very well could be the division leading Buffalo Bills! The only team NE has played all season that had a winning record before the Ravens were the Bills 16-10.
-
It is possible that both Star and Gore have hit that proverbial wall. That might be a reason to not run Gore up the middle so often...especially when Mo-Tor is doing so well. Gore averaged 1.4 YPC and Singletary 4.8 YPC. There should have been no question as to who should have been getting the ball. Dunno if i'd call it "cute", more like a Dumbell.
-
The Bills were lucky they were playing the 1-8 Redskins today. That Bills play calling that resulted going from first down at the 2 yard line of the Skins to losing 22 yards after 3 failed pass attempts which resulted in a FG. This OC still has his head up his backside half the time! I also think he ran "motor" more today because he was instructed to do so.
