My beef with google is there is quite a bit of analysists being done and when it slows down it slows down all of the sites which call google to do it. Work with some sites which usually have issues and when traced it is almost always a delay from loading google JS, CSS and other stuff. When asked to prove it I told them to create identical pages without google stuff copying necessary CSS and JS not pointing to Google and the "Google Lite" pages have no issues while those pages using Google for services do not have performance issues.
