The Writing Is On The Wall for The Gilly Lock
Peter replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My fear is that, once he gets his $$$, there will be no leverage and no way to (in your words) "hold him accountable." He has to want to put in the effort, tackle, and not look to blame teammates rather than chase after a guy running toward the end zone. The guy is a very, very good player (although I am not sure he is worth the money he reportedly wants) and I would love him at his best . . . I just do not know . . . . -
The Writing Is On The Wall for The Gilly Lock

A couple of thoughts: Gilmore is very talented, and I had defended him prior to this past year. I was extremely disappointed in Gilmore this past year. It had everything to do with effort and attitude (presumably stemming from not wanting to get hurt) than with his ability. $14 million question: Can we trust the guy once he is paid or is tagged? Or, are we going to see a repeat of a guy who makes little effort to tackle or make a play and who would rather slow down to look over at another teammate rather than chase a guy heading toward the end zone? -
The Rooneys have two rules. The second one is don't send or look at porn using Steelers' emails or servers.

Very interesting and a good sign for Anthony Lynn if the meeting continued to today. -

Our receivers (including Sammy) seem to like and respect Sanjay. -
McDermott emerging as favorite in coaching search...

Would O'Brien really be a Bills' target? We know the Pegulas are huge Penn State benefactors etc. I wonder what the Pegulas thought of O'Brien leaving Penn State. -

Am I mistaken, but wasn't McDermott let go by the Eagles? If so, does anyone know why? -

. . . or McDermott wants to see what else is available first. -
The Doug Whaley/porn story is a cautionary tale. I have two sons. I keep telling them that when I was young and stupid, I could afford to be young and stupid. There are no photographs of me being young and stupid. Technology is both a blessing and a curse. Blessing: The world is at our fingertips. Curse: The world is at our fingertips. One can send or receive the "wrong" text, email, or photo, and your life can change forever.

That is certainly a possibility.

McDermott emerging as favorite in coaching search...

Fair point, but this is what both owners and fans apparently do. Last year, Mike Shula was a hot name because of what he did with Cam Newton. It turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. Because the Panthers went to the Super Bowl and Shula reportedly wanted to concentrate on that rather than interview, it was too late for him to be hired. Have we heard Shula's name once this off season as a HC candidate? P.S. Ray Horton got fired as the Cleveland DC the other day. Wasn't he a name that we heard about a few years ago as a potential HC candidate for teams. I am underwhelmed by these names. I will wait to see how this plays out, but it is hard to be excited (one way or the other) about any of the guys they are interviewing at this point. -
Coach search has come (again) who is the best fit?
Peter replied to mead107's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Dabo is smart, he will stay at Clemson. Being a college coach is a lot less stressful and time consuming (in my judgment) than being an NFL coach - particularly after having just won the national championship. He has built the program up to the point where it has and will be a lot easier to recruit players. He also has complete control of the program and does not have to deal with the reported and rumored issues that we have with the Bills. In the NFL, Dabo also would not have that huge reservoir of goodwill that he has at Clemson. As we have seen, NFL coaches are on a very short fuse. Also, as Nick Saban found, it is more difficult to win when you cannot dominate recruiting as some of these guys can. Dabo is now a living legend at Clemson who has built Clemson back up to national prominence and can make more money than he can spend in a lifetime. Go Canes. -
FWIW - I do agree with the parts of your response that are bolded.

John - you always capture my attention (except when you comment about U2) . . . but the more cryptic you are, the more anxious I am to hear more from the JW oracle.

Since he was in elementary school, his report cards always said "Douglas works well with others."

John Murphy Show - Can't Talk To Viewers Anymore

Both Murph and Chris Brown are in difficult positions given who signs their paychecks. It is not so much an excuse as a fact of life. -
I wonder if Doug, Tom, and David Caldwell complete each other's sentences. Whatever. I guess you do not like the guy. As an aside, I have no problem with the coach or anyone else having some personality. For the football stuff, you can read my far too many posts on the subject. As for work ethic, these guys work essentially around the clock. Being an NFL coach is about as stressful and time consuming as any job. Believe what you want about whether Rex or any member of his staff put in a tremendous amount of work and time away from their families.

I wonder if whoever is making the decision is (are) not that impressed with those interviewed or they simply do not have a conviction about any particular guy. This is such an important decision for this franchise, they really need to hit a homerun - especially after what has transpired. Whether you are a Rex supporter (like me) or a Rex hater (like many who post here), this decision is incredibly important going forward for a whole host or reasons that include football, fan excitement, and how the team (and the leadership group) is perceived among both fans and around the league. There really is no margin for error.
