MMQB: Peter King on the Bills' HC Search
Peter replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think there is a HUGE difference between King and Clayton. I stopped listening to Clayton on WGR because he does not seem to offer anything as his opinion (even though it is sometimes characterized as more than that). Most guys on this board would do about as well as Clayton. I consider Peter King to be a cut above Clayton at least. -
Fans and ownership apparently. I agree. The jury is still out on 2016.

Carucci: Lynn is having 2nd Thoughts about Bills' HC Job

Which coordinators do you see Coughlin going after if he were to get the job? -
MMQB: Peter King on the Bills' HC Search
Peter replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A lot of you guys refused to believe me when I predicted this. Who knows - maybe we will get lucky. Maybe we will end up somehow hiring someone about whom we can all get excited and rally around . . . . . -
This may surprise some people, but I think Whaley and Monos have done a pretty good job in the draft all things considered. They are not perfect in evaluating talent, but no one is. I would not have traded as much as we did to get Sammy, but he is a good player (when healthy) and I cannot wait to see him play a full year for the Bills while not battling injuries (if that is possible). The best pick in my I opinion (value/talent) was Seantrel in the seventh round. It is difficult to get a first year starter in the seventh round but the Bills had the you know what to take the chance on him. I hope Seantrel gets healthy and find something other than weed to get him through as long as the NFL continues to ban it. As for QBs - we and any Buffalo Bills HC would look a lot better with an elite QB. The problem is that there are not many of those and college football does not do a good job of developing them. In the end, some teams become desperate and overdraft a guy like EJ. At least we did not give up the farm for RGIII. P.S. The last draft does not look as good as I initially thought but the jury is still out. It could end up being a great draft. For 2016 by itself, it did not do us any good.

Carucci: Lynn is having 2nd Thoughts about Bills' HC Job
Peter replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not if he wanted to control his own destiny . . . . It is amazing how some of the Rex Haters on this board and in the media are so myopic and quick to claim that Rex's decision was insane . . . yet they forgot or conveniently failed to mention that Gase made the same decision on the preceding drive even though his defense gave up MORE yards, he punted from OUR end, he did not know whether he would get the ball back, and the Dolphins needed the win at the time to control their own destiny (unless they got help from other teams the next day and/or they beat the Pats the next week). -

Gase made that bet after his defense gave up even more yards than the Bills did and without knowing if he would get the ball back. P.S. The Bills defense stopped the Dolphins on the previous drive. -
Wow, I feel so much better now that I know that Doug Whaley is leading the franchise that I love. Sorry, I cannot get excited about him.

I suspect that the GM embarrassing an NFL owner around the league and the country is not a good thing.

Polian says candidates have reason to be wary of Buffalo
Peter replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think I heard Doug Whaley say a hundred times that he had control of the 53 and Rex had control of the 46 . . . at least until it was no longer true. I get where, depending on your perspective regarding Rex, there could be a difference of opinion. I also get that I am one of the guys who has defended Rex. But try to take Rex out of the equation and pretend that the prior coach's name was Chan McLevy or someone else. I have to believe that it would cause concern to any candidate if the prior guy got less than two years even though he had been the most successful coach of that franchise in the preceding 17 and especially with all of the devastating leaks (whether you believe the emanated from Whaley or not). -

As I also have mentioned, I do not believe that Doug Whaley will want to hire anyone other than someone who is beholden to him or may have more cache than he does. That is one reason why I would be surprised if Whaley (as opposed to the Pegulas) puts Coughlin on the list (unless something changes). -
You guys must be very proud that Doug Whaley is the leader of our franchise. As for me, I was completely embarrassed the other day and Whaley is not someone whom I would want my success to depend if I were a HC candidate that had other options.
-
. . . and this may happen sooner than I originally thought . . . depending on whether they are able to hire someone as the HC that ownership wants to be the face of their franchise going forward. We shall see.
-
If you are suggesting that I have not liked Doug Whaley since I came to the opinion that Whaley threw Rex under the bus and undermined him with ownership and the media even though I previously defended him . . . you would be correct. You will recall, however, that I cautioned -- BEFORE Rex was fired -- that the Bills job would not be viewed as particularly desirable and would cause concern with potential candidates for the reasons I previously stated - particularly those with options and not beholden to Doug Whaley.
-
As an aside, I do not consider Frank Reich to be a particularly good candidate as a HC at this moment in time (so I disagree with Polian there). I also think that this comment is based on Polian's views in general and, if it related to Buffalo in particular, I presume that he would prefer that it be with another GM. I also think (based on prior history and what John C recently has tweeted) that Polian would come back, if asked, in a football czar role, and, if he did, Whaley would not last long. At this point, what choice do they have but to go forward with these interviews. Right now -- presuming nothing changes -- I would presume that Whaley continues to be the GM in at least the short term. They have made their bed . . . . If Polian comes on board or they have problems getting a HC candidate that ownership wants because of Whaley in general (or his role in particular), things could change more quickly than the one year deadline that some have mentioned. Again, I readily admit that this is my "conjecture."

Polian says candidates have reason to be wary of Buffalo
Peter replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So you guys are saying that these guys are not considered (or would be considered) the top candidates. Ok, fine. -
Just my "educated" opinion: Buyer's remorse. The Pegulas are beginning to realize that they made a mistake putting all of their eggs in the Doug Whaley basket and this was amply illustrated by the press conference the other day. I suspect that NFL owners do not like to be embarrassed. He does not. Yet, he is close to ownership (reportedly) and read the same Terry Pegula quotes that I did. I had referenced them the other day. They also are bolded in one of my earlier posts in this thread.
-
It is conjecture on my part. It is based on my educated "conjecture" that Polian (an icon of the franchise and reportedly close with ownership by various sources) would not make these pointed comments otherwise. Just my two cents.

I am not saying that they are taking any jobs - that is why they are under a separate category as two guys mentioned every year. -
Polian says candidates have reason to be wary of Buffalo
Peter replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Who are A-list candidates? I presume that the people considered to be A-list candidates around the league are: Harbaugh (presumably staying at Michigan) Peyton (who knows what is going to happen to him and whether the rumors of a possible trade are true) McDaniels Patricia Shanahan Plus two guys mentioned each year: Cowher Gruden -
Based on recent events, I agree that Whaley is on the hottest of hot seats. It is ironic that Whaley should find himself in this position. The guy outsmarted himself.

Peter replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe . . . just maybe the Pegulas tacitly approved of this as one step to distance themselves from the guy who convinced them to put all of their eggs in the Doug Whaley basket and has embarrassed them. Anyone not beholden to Whaley or has other better choices. As for the Pats guys, I presume that Bill B is counseling not to take that job in the interest of their future careers given how things have gone. -

It is not just Polian (or any of the other guys who have commented) who thinks that the Bills job is not particularly desirable . . . or that the Bills aren't looking at A-list candidates: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/01/03/bills-arent-looking-for-a-list-coaches-yet/
