Rob Johnson is still bitter after 20 years
Peter replied to Sky Diver's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
On this we disagree. I believe that, if we had an offensive line that was better in pass protection, he would have been just fine for us. As it was, he had some good games for us and, I think, at one time (perhaps still) he holds a Bills record for completion percentage or something like that. "Truly awful" does not accurately describe RJ's ability and betrays your bias. In any event, I admired his courage and dedication to the team notwithstanding the incessant abuse he took from some who seemed to be Flutie fans more than they were Buffalo Bills fans. Just my two cents. -

Me too. I was surprised at how vitriolic some in our fan base were regarding him. They never seemed to ever give the guy any benefit of the doubt. I think that the Bills would have been better off with one or the other. With both, we had a civil war. -

A lot of people did not seem to know that for some reason. I recall reading about the Buffalo connection when we acquired him. As I recall, she spent some of her years growing up in WNY. -

It is funny how people perceive of things differently. My take: Notwithstanding that Johnson's mom was a Buffalonian and he showed courage by taking a beating for the team and the fans, there was a certain segment of our "fans" that actually stood up and cheered at a home game when RJ got hurt. I was never more embarrassed to be a Buffalo Bills fan. Prior to that, I thought that we had some of the best fans in all of sports. After that, I thought that we still had some great fans, but a large segment were really no better than any other city . . . and those that cheered an injury to one of our own were about as low as you could go. -

I will never forget Flutie's choice of pronouns in the post game press conferences depending on whether the Bills won or lost. When the Bills won, he would use "I" and when the Bills lost, he would use "we." Thurman is on record regarding what he thought of Flutie as a teammate. Spoiler alert: not much. I had posted a link to the interview some time ago. I tried to search for it a moment ago, but I am not sure what is going on with the search function. You can look for it if you don't trust me. It is my understanding that Thurman is not alone in his view of Flutie. In the meantime, Johnson left the field with the Bills ahead in a playoff game while Flute did what the Flutopians always criticized Johnson of doing when the game was on the line in his Bills playoff game against the Dolphins . . . . https://youtu.be/k-gRYXg7D08 Irony. -

Jerry Sullivan: Ralph Wilson Was A Cheapskate

It is a shame the Bills never hired Doug Whaley. He could have really "helped the team." -

I have trouble believing the substance of this (whether Ty Dunne heard this from someone or not). The guy (Cordy) came back from a kidney transplant to play in the freaking NFL. How much more dedication does one have to show. It sounds like someone is trying to gratuitously bad mouth Cordy (as has happened after some of the others have departed). As for Ty Dunne, he is a wonderful features writer, but I do not seem to recall him breaking a lot of stories. I could be wrong on that, but national people like Adam Schefter and Josina Anderson seem to break many more Buffalo Bills stories than any (or at least most) of the guys that are based locally.

Bills fire Randy "Woody" Ribbeck after 35 years
Peter replied to Freddie's Dead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Firing the long time assistant equipment manager? It seems like a gratuitous move. Was he late removing a tee after a kick off? Did he not have enough experience folding laundry after 35 years? Of course, McCoach fired the team chaplain . . . so I suppose he will fire just about everyone. -
FWIW - Ken Dorsey is a very bright guy who excelled at the QB position in college without having an elite arm. Based on what I know of him, I suspect that Dorsey is a very good coach and would be a great hire. I also suspect that Dorsey will end up being an OC at some point in his career. Disclaimer: I am a Canes fan, but I do believe that Dorsey would be a good coach.

I am not a big fan of the term either. I do seem to recall that it was a former Buffalo Bills player or players that came up with this term while they were playing with the Bills. If I recall correctly, it was one or both of Nick Barnett or Kawika Mitchell. I am sure that they did not mean anything negative by it notwithstanding its negative connotations . . . unless, of course, you are a member of the Cosa Nostra, own a small olive oil company through which you are laundering money, have a silent interest in Bada Bing or various construction or waste management companies in or around northern New Jersey, or refer to what you do as "this thing of ours."

Marcell Dareus: Going to Jaguars “changed my life”
Peter replied to SaviorPeterman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Let's create more and more holes and still have dead cap space in 2018. None of these guys you list are d-bags. They are all well liked among teammates. One of those guys even had the fortitude to come back from a kidney operation. Clay may be our most dependable receiver. Hughes is the only guy that gets any pressure on the QB on a team that had significantly fewer sacks/QB pressures than last year. Dareus (as a tackle) does a lot that does not necessarily show up on the stat sheet and still will take up at least the third highest amount of cap space in 2018. McCoy is the best player on the team. Tyrod was on a reasonable contract this past year. His future depends on other options going forward. Sammy's contract is over this year. The Rams, Bills, Pats, whoever all have the option to pay him whatever he is worth. The same is true with EJ Gaines (for whom Sammy was traded). -

Yes, he got suspended. Yes, he was late. Those are situations that can be managed with a guy who is well liked among his teammates. If he were a d-bag and hated by his teammates, I would agree with you. -

I like KB also, but we had other assets to get him. Also, it only will be "well worth it" IF we can sign him to an extension. -

We could have traded, cut, or re-negotiated his contract at the end of 2018. It is clear to me that Marcel was not a disruption or cancer (as some have thrown out that term) given what his teammates had to say about him and his community service and reaction to the trade. The guy has had a lot of tragedy in his life . . . especially given his age. In my view, a talented coach should be able to deal with his Dareus' personality. Just my two cents. We made the playoffs. Wonderful. It was fun. Now we have to deal in reality. If you like the luck that it took to get there (and overcome the deficiencies of our team), you should go to Vegas and see if lady luck smiles upon you. -

In the meantime, Dareus takes up at least the third highest amount of cap space on the Bills in 2018 regardless. Any savings on Glenn and Hughes in 2018 is not worth the holes that they would create. We traded Watkins for Gaines and EJ is a free agent now as is Watkins. Darby was on a reasonable rookie deal. -

They have created more and more holes for themselves that have to be filled. I wish them luck. I wish them the same luck that it took to get into the playoffs (miracle play by Dalton and late and questionable call against the Colts on the two point conversion). Knowing the history of Buffalo Sports teams, I think that it will be a while before we have the good fortune to have that kind of luck. I suspect that, with the holes that we have on this roster, it will take even more of a miracle to get into the playoffs next year. I hope I am wrong and somehow we manage to do it. I do not think that it is likely though. You wish nothing but injuries on a player?!? Hmmm. Happy New Year. -

Again, he still takes up at least the third highest amount of cap space in 2018 even though he will not play for us next year (and most of this past year). I also suspect that he would have been playing more - especially given that McBeane outsmarted themselves and had to end up signing a bigger (less talented) tackle. -
Marcell Dareus: Going to Jaguars “changed my life”
Peter replied to SaviorPeterman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Let's not kid ourselves. We made the playoffs in large measure because: 1) A very late and questionable call against the Colts on the two point conversion; 2) A miracle play by Andy Dalton on 4th and 12 from the 49 yard line. In 2017: Our point differential was worse than in 2016. Our offense was ranked worse than in 2016. Our defense was ranked worse than in 2016. I hope McBeane are very successful with the Bills, but let's not think that these guys walk on water or that we need to say "amen" every time the word "process" comes out of their mouths. -

Peter replied to SaviorPeterman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Does he not take up (at least) the third highest amount of cap space for the Bills in 2018? Could we have waited to trade him after next year? Wouldn't we have the option to trade, cut, or re-negotiate his contract at the end of 2018? (These are the options to which I was referring). -
Marcell Dareus: Going to Jaguars “changed my life”
Peter replied to SaviorPeterman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The deal and the lack of a clause mitigating the impact of suspensions is on the prior GM (and Overdorf). Hindsight is what it is. Nevertheless, notwithstanding the contract, I still disagree with the trade and its timing for the reasons why I have stated. No matter what the Bills do, Dareus will be at least the third highest "paid" (cap space) Buffalo Bill in 2018 even though he will be playing elsewhere. Depending on what the Bills do, Dareus may even end up being the highest or second highest "paid" Buffalo Bill. Even if you are one of the accountants that love this trade, it clearly did not have to be made when it was made. We could have had him play for the Bills this past year and next year and then decide whether to trade him. -

Your argument might make sense except that we would have the same options that the Jags would have next year and would have made use of someone who is going to take up the third highest amount of cap space on the team (as of right now) even though he was traded to the Jags.
