Training Camp practice 8/3: Pads come on
billybrew1 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Handsy? Isn't that the way the chefs covered us and Tampa covered the chefs? The Bills need to be ready to play the game the way it is called. We can't let cheatin' lowdown dirty refs dictate who wins! So we have to ready for hand to hand fighting and for our corners to play heavy as well. (But they'll probably call just us with PI). Man, I really hope you're right! That'd be so awesome if they work out and become dominant. Then we an draft a DT this spring and be good to go along the all-important DL.... That guarantees us a SB in my book. I sure hope the DL continues to look good once Dion is back..... -

Yes new. New and improved from last season. So? What's that going to look like? (NFLMVP) -
I know Antonio Williams excelled as a ST player in college and looked like a starting RB in his brief display vs. Miami I think he's got a good chance. If Brenda doesn't show he can play STs well (I think he projects as a returner, I say McKenzie as PR and Brenda as KO) I don't think he makes it. I think the third RB has to excel at both (STer and RB) And I know Moss has already said he is looking to become as valuable as he can to the Buffalo Bills so I'm sure he volunteered for whatever they need out of him. Not sure about Singletary? But I imagine he would as well. I do think this is the year where all STers are good at their position as well and that's a big reason Roberts is gone (one reason at least, another being a cost cutting move, another getting younger and finally, the last and biggest reason is that he kept carrying it out when he should have downed it. Maybe another reason is that they think McKenzie (Who I think should have been given a raise by someone but I'm glad he's still here.) is better? But what a battle we have for that last spot! Kumerow vs. Hodgins, Stevenson to IR..... Go Bills!

So, new for the 2021 team..... - New and improved Josh Allen, takes that experience and becomes that much better hitting year four. - More depth at WR. - An ironed-out run game where Daboll puts in some time. - An improved O-line moreso in the run game. - A faster, better, hungrier, deeper DL. - a deeper roster everywhere..... Anything else? Go Bills! -

And I think the way that that is going to effect our team is our STers will also be good at the position they are playing.... Not just STers.... Like McKenzie, Kumerow, Obada, A. Williams and maybe even Brenda becomes a PR or KO? (AND! And.... He is good at his ST job plus Daboll draws up a few easy 50 yard gainers where he beats the over zealous contain with speed. -
So, this is very interesting. When you look for what is different from last year's roster to this one, it could be that all our special teamers can also play their position very well too..... A. Williams for Taiwan. Efe Obada for D. Johnson. Kumerow for Roberts. (ID think Andre was a very good WR) who am I missing? We get a ton more offense with Antonio and Kumerow...... The DL being improved is a core goal for '21. Although I get - that these are three outstanding STers, maybe Heath can.... you know, coach these new guys up? Super Bowl rosters have to be incredibly deep rosters and it looks like the Bills are moving in that direction. You're only good at one thing? You can't make the Buffalo Bills....unless your name is Allen or Diggs. People often talk negatively about Tremaine but I take my hat off to him that he plays STs for us. He has a ridiculous job on defense for us, never leaving the field and then he stays on for the punt or what have you...pretty neat.
-
Yes, there certainly is. Slot WR is an easier position than flanker but we have one of the best in Beasley. Sanders is a pretty damn good #2 or at least was one last season. Who knows when his body will give out? Dion Dawkins, I think, is already on the list with those 3 if not, just by a notch. Williams was extremely impressive as a pass blocker. Can he improve as a run blocker? He's young enough and is only hitting year two in our offense. Morse is under appreciated on our team but not a true blue-chipper. Can Singletary take a step-up and be a reasonable semi-copy of Thurman Thomas? I think he can be close if he has some success to build on. If the run blocking is better and more aligned with his game. Bring a TT copy would be pretty good for a third rounder. I definitely think he can catch better, he's a good blocker already, he is very similar to Thurman in making many miss in a phone booth. He's great at turning four into twelve or more. His problem is getting three when there is only one. On defense we have a lot of picks too though they are a bit more of complete guesses. Tremaine is first and foremost and a light could turn on for him. Maybe the front four do more damage opening big play possibilities for him? Then there's Ed. Are we holding him back? I know he doesn't try to shoot gaps fast often if ever. What's up with that? Leslie thinks he can make more plays in his defense; let's see it. Then after that is a big drop-off to maybe AJ? Poyer and Hyde are what they are; a solid pair of safeties. Anyway, AJ is entering year two so he has a shot. Next I have Groot (more talent) over Boogie (more experience). Groot has a good name, a good look and moves incredible athletically for a huge man. I didn't look up any film on Boogie and his peculiar hgt. wgt. for an end or tackle. A true tweener, I wish him the best and I get some hope for him in that he already has a lot of fans. Maybe they're right? Anyhoo, we really, really, really need these guys to come thru for us to have a decent shot at dethroning the AFC Champs.
-
Yeah, but maybe he should have known, after all he did take two in a row on draft day. All GMs have to take educated guesses all the time. I know Addison is an OK player, but we have to figure a way to beat the chefs. I sure hope Groot makes us all happy and becomes the blue-chip player we absolutely need in that front four.... the trouble is we might need two.... Ed? Imho, it is very difficult to determine how good (or bad) defensive linemen are in Leslie's defense. It is not like Ed actually tries to shoot the gap much. I also see he is often the last one on the line to move. I don't think it is because he is the slowest, I think he's playing his assignment which isn't shooting gaps. Although our defense foes play more aggressive in the playoffs....I was happy with the pick when we made it. I watched a couple breakdowns of Ed and they convinced me he was unusually strong, athletic and fast. I expected a poor man's Aaron Donald But I don't think we play him that way very often. Is it because he can't ? Is it because we play this weird defense where we keep the ball in front us to a fault? I have no idea.... Lack of talent or lack of creating a pressure defense? Not that we're terrible.... aside from when we play the chefs. How did Tampa make them look bad when we can't even make them look human?
-
Beane's job is to win a Super Bowl. Looking at last year's defense (particularly against road block KC) the defense is far from ready to stop KC. Did we do enough this offseason? Obada, Star, Groot And Boogie are the new faces. Leslie is counting on Tremaine, Ed and AJ a lot more this year. What kind of defense does that give us? At least we're probably good facing Baltimore again (and there's a 50/50 chance we will again probably). I hope Obada makes it. I certainly hope Harry's knee is way better than last year and that he is all set to have his best season ever. And you gotta hope Leslie is right about our young (high pick) talent stepping up this year. If Tremaine resembled Urlacher we'd be a very different defense. If our front four could win more one on one battles (a lot more) chaos would ensue giving Tremaine lanes to make more impact. The front seven isn't the only place that has to improve. Our zones were far too soft vs. the chefs and we paid no special attention to KC's two big stars.

The Bills tough schedule had them being the source of the game of the week more often than not last season. The Bills once again have a tough schedule but not as difficult I don't think. (Because you never know as San Fran was supposed to be one of our toughest games but turned into an easy win.) I hope the NFL has more great match ups than they did last season. There are lots of good teams: Tampa, KC, then Buffalo, then Baltimore, Green Bay, Tennessee, Cleveland, the colts (maybe) and the whole NFC West. That's 11 -12 premium teams. Then there's the teams that might take a leap up: SD, NE, Miami, LV, The Raiders, Minnesota, Maybe Pittsburgh and Washington with Fitz. Minnesota is an interesting team that might jump. So, I think any of these teams playing head to head at least means a watchable game....But it is the top 11 -12 teams you want to see head to head. The Bills have four of those premium match ups: Colts, Bucs, chefs, Titans. And the two pats games are of course near major games. Do you remember all those years of the pats beating us? They would kill us once and play us close once. I think that what happens this (like last year when we won both) year and we win both again. One close win, one a blow out win. I say we still beat the fish handily. I know, I know, they're a lot better....we still kill 'em though....sweeping the afc east a second year in a row.... I got the Bills going 14-3..... The KC game will determine who gets the bye week. I think right now, the chefs are still the better team, but you have to play the game and root for our Bills! I say Allen is better than last year, If his line protects him and his weapons are healthy, he will score a lot on any team. He is MVP level for certain. Our STs seem good enough (although McKenzie has to come up big as KO/PR).....It's the defense that probably decides who wins. If the defense can play respectful, come up with some big stops and big plays we stand a great chance at winning. Right now, the Bills defense is very different along the DL with: Obada, Star, Boogie and Groot looking to make a big impact. With Leslie counting on AJ, Ed and Tremaine taking a step up this year. Do the Bills still sign a vet CB to make us comfortably deep? I sure hope so. Hopefully one much better than last year's swing and miss (Norman who made two and half nice plays on the year). I think it's time the Bills brass studied a ton of film to decide who becomes a Bill moreso than who recently played for the panthers; it's not really working. Just rambling on, Go Bills!
-
Does anyone think we could be in the same exact shoes as we were with Jim Kelly around thirty years ago? We had the sophisticated Ted Marchibroda running the offense. He left, went to the colts and took Will Wolford with him. The Bills O was never really the same (although it remained very good). The offense lost its ability to be innovative and losing Wolford was a huge loss that we never replaced. Who might Daboll take? What coaches? What players? Is Daboll the real talent in Buffalo? Can the Bills draft a front seven defender and then put him into a position to really excel? We have the highest paid DL in the league but we get middle of the pack results. Tremaine is certainly good but he seldom gets your juices flowing with his powerful play. This year is going to be very telling for the defense, those who created it and those who developed it. Last year while we were a middle of the pack defense we did look a bit better than that in the playoffs (until, of course, we played KC and looked hopeless). There is little chance Daboll stays another year (maybe if the Bills go to the Super Bowl all positions are filled again) are we letting the wrong coach go? What if the D doesn't improve this year and the offense does? What if play KC and score over forty but lose? These things could really happen..... What if? What say you, stadium wall?
-
My question is which is the higher amount for the 2022 season, Allen's pay with his fifth year contract or a brand new contract? In other words, how do we build a Super Bowl roster? I mean, we could win it this year should everything go right but I think on paper Tampa and KC are better teams right now. Im think with AJ, Groot And Boogie Getting playing time this year, and Jerry, Star And Addison coming year for the books next year, maybe we can sign an impact player to add to our D where ever it turns out we need it, and have another strong draft (I'm assuming we always have a strong draft under Beane which is totally undecided at this point.) Anyway, could Beane be holding off on an Allen deal in order to take a big swing at a Super Bowl next year?

This is an hilarious post. But hopefully the Bills know exactly what to do at WR (& DL for that matter!) Makes me want to watch a Bills game.... I just have to stay away from that AFC Championship Game..... That game will bring you down right away. The Bills have got to be better! They have got to score a LOT of points in week five. They have to come up with some legit stops on defense. Like a pass defensed as they go for either Kelce or Hill. Maybe even an int. Maybe a sack and FF on Mahomes...... Then, we need to win that ST battle. We have to win! Go Bills!

I really think it is time Bills fans and McBeane start to consider carrying seven WRs. Don't ask me how. Especially with our weird and over-stacked DL it would be very hard. But I love that Kumerow is big and plays special teams. I bet he knows the O well as well. I have McKenzie as a lock and either the kick or punt returner (But not probably both....I think he would get injured doing that too much. Better to split the job between two WRs. Which brings me to Stevenson. He could be a good returner while he learns WR. I also love Hodgins as a WR. Because he is not only big, but long and athletic. A leaper. We need to start developing our own weapons and Kumerow, Stevenson And Hodgins are a good place to look. We also need to be deeper with weapons so we don't run out like we did last year. I think seven gives us the weapons we need. We are weak at TE, maybe carry just two? Have some on the PS to call up if needed. IDK? I want 7 WRs and 11 DL. DL is such a mess. Do we keep Johnson who excels on STs? Obada seems too good to wave. Addison will cost us millions to wave. It's nuts. Bottom line: The Bills need to be WAY better to beat the chefs in week five (and then again in Buffalo in January). To do that we need more very good weapons on offense. And much better defense all the way around. (our STs faired rather well last winter, knock on wood.)
-
Maybe the process is going to pay off big this year? Our entire defense HAS to be better if we are to beat KC (& Tampa). I mean, we had a real gotta go back to the drawing board moment vs. KC. Fans were not stupid calling for Leslie's head. If it ain't Leslie maybe it is the talent? We have 12 DL that could conceivably make our roster but how many will disrupt KC's plans? We had the fantastic 2017 draft, we got JA, We did excellent getting Poyer & Hyde, we did well in free agency overall, but it is the draft after 2017 not counting Allen that are the questions. Or, another way of looking at it is the problem is the defense (which was largely drafted). Tremaine, Ed, AJ, Groot And Boogie will determine if the Bills are a Super Team or not. They can play so-so all year and the O and STs will keep them winnng but in the playoffs you need balance and you need defense. (I think Tremaine is a big key. He has the talent to really be a great player. He needs the drive, he has got to recognize the plays, no where everyone is going, step into those passing lanes and get his hands on some balls. He should be a zone nightmare for QBs but he is not.)
-
I recommend you don't (LOL) you'll be calling for Frazier's Head (again). It's bad, we were almost completely outclassed. So strange to see after we kicked do many other teams asses. The good news is of course that All our skill weapons were injured. So, on offense there is clear hope if we can stay healthy. Our special teams played well so that's OK. Where we're really looking for answers is defense. Our pass rush was non-existent. Our coverage was soft and we had no idea where KC's two big weapons were. Like we played complete straight zone giving no special attention to The big two. In man, it was just as bad. So, Leslie..... LOL! I have no idea how he plans to slow them down. I guess we have to break out the Tampa film. (I didn't watch the SB as I hate both teams, LOL, I almost always do.... I remember rooting for Cincinnati vs. SF and not hating either team. That was the last one I think? No, I liked SF vs. KC. I love defensive based teams.. I don't understand how we can get better in the back seven with the same exact guys but I guess they can improve. Especially with a better front four.... Groot is sooooo raw though. If he has a good rookie year we probably have something special as he is as raw as they come. Maybe Star, Obada, AJ And Boogie turn around the front four? You could add Harry to that list as he enters year two of his rebuilt knee... so, it's possible they can be a lot better.....I sure hope Obada makes it! It will definitely be a great season when we are playing anyone but KC or Tampa.... If we beat them too it'll be super. Go Bills!

Diggs wants to hit more deep balls...
billybrew1 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe Stevenson makes the roster? As the deep speed guy? Is He our fastest WR? Is he our best option going long? i had him coming down with an untimely injury to red-shirt in '21 but perhaps we need him this year for his deep speed? While Diggs, Sanders, McKenzie and Davis are all capable of going long and getting open I don't think any of those guys strike any fear into a defense? Maybe Stevenson does? The Bills have to be a lot better than last season in all three phases including Josh Allen if we are to upset the reigning chefs in our conference.... Everyone, to a man needs to be better. Especially our defensive line, we have to help our back seven shorten their coverage time significantly. We have to hit Mahomes and make him nervous. We need to better disguise coverages, and know where the chefs talent is and get some coverage there. Geez, we were pretty bad last year at everything defense..... The offense has to get healthier for the playoffs #1, but they need to be better as well. JA has to go into an unbeatable zone. I know he can do it. That is what he is going to be this year; almost impossible to beat. Especially with our improved run game ,and better depth at WR. -
I'm watching the Chefs-Bills game, the AFC Championship and it is very clear our WRs are severely beat up, no longer able to get open, JB nothing like his former self the year before. Im telling you, we need impact players. We need a lot of them. On both sides of the ball. On offense, it is clear, we need our weapons to get open. (We also need refs to call holding according to the rule book.) On defense it is not as clear but our zone defense was way too soft. We had zero awareness of where Kelce was and man, that is terrible! We looked poorly coached. We have to lean on KC's two big play makers and it looked like we did the opposite. Having said all that, I'll tell you, our DL has to help our coverage. If Jerry and Addison don't play better playing less. If we drafted like ***** getting AJ, Boogie and Groot, we'll never beat the chefs....They are sooooo much more than Mahomes. They beat us on both lines. They out-skilled us, they beat us everywhere. We can beat them, but it is going to take a lot of work. And we had better of drafted well....Very well. If we have this O healthy: a better OL than last year with improvement interiorly. A tougher OL. We go four-wide with these healthy receivers.... Diggs, Sanders, Beasley and Davis. Singletary the lone back....Hopefully he plays with more confidence than last year, more understanding of the O. More plays called to match his skills. Looking at the game, maybe we need the rookie, Stevenson to really stretch the D? IDK? Gotta have true weapons. Gotta have them healthy.
-
The Bills D has to get meaner and tougher and win those one on one match ups to really mess plays up! This year, I hope, all these defensive coaches we have, four former DC's (at least) in our DL, LB, DC, and HC and perhaps our secondary coach was a DC before as well? All these linemen, if they can just play all out every play and then rotate like they're supposed to....With all these coaches and all these old players, they should really help our young DL (Tremaine, Ed, AJ, Groot And Boogie) advance their games so that by November they can be useful young bucks. (But, then you just have to wonder if the rookies are strong enough, LOL. I remember some young Bill talking about Dareus when Dareus was teally good and he said he could do what Dareus could if he was massively strong like Dareus. So, you hav to born with that frame that allows you to get unusually strong and then you have to put in all the massive hours working it.... I sure hope Groot And Basham were captains on the weight lifting teams at their respective colleges.

Diggs wants to hit more deep balls...
billybrew1 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's pretty clear. We, at that time, had a very young QB that needed an established WR to ensure his growth. We got that. We still have that. The vikings also did fantastic for sure. No playoffs to speak of, no, but it appears that they received a ton from Buffalo. What do the Vikings need to do to make the playoffs? I am not sure what they lack as they are never on tv here. -
Jonathan? yeah, pretty weird.
