  1. Comparing a double homicide to an instance of child abuse? I don't think AP will need to break the bank and bring Johnny Cochran back from the dead to determine whether he gets 10 hours of community service or just 6 months probation for his transgression.
  2. Sounds like your pops could've benefited from some quality time with the Shake Weight. Its never too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts.
  3. No he never beat his kids before the AP case, but there really wasn't any guiding principle or reason for not beating his kids. Now that the Vikings have addressed the situation, but addressed it inadequately, he is more likely to test the waters. Go cut birddog a switch. A small one. Just to see how it goes. Human beings simply do not know how to behave in polite society without rulings from the NFL. Its nothing short of miraculous that people have managed to cohabitate for millennia prior to the NFL-AFL merger and personal conduct policy.
  4. You're telling me that average Joe takes his queues from whether or not Goodell or Ziggy would deem the action in question a suspend-able offense?
  5. People have always turned to the Minnesota Vikings for guidance on whether or not to beat their kids. Parents are just lost without the Vikes. Remember when Randy Moss ran over that road worker with his car because she wouldn't flag him on and then similar cases increased dramatically? Or when AP got busted for driving 105 mph and was slapped on the wrist? Everyone was driving as fast as their GEO Metros could take them (61 mph). How many sex boats have we seen since those players involved walked away unpunished? Domes are collapsing at record a pace because they're just not sure whether they should remain inflated anymore. Minnesota leads the nation whether we like it or not.
  6. I am taking you off of my christmas card list and you are no longer invited to my birthday party.
  7. Stats do not lie. Nor do they tell the truth. They are just data points. The degree to which statistics may reveal truths depends on the person interpreting them.
  8. I do not understand the constant comparisons of the AP situation to the Rice case. Most of us, including myself, do not agree with physical forms of discipline when it comes to raising children. It isn't how I was raised and I don't see it fitting in to my child rearing techniques if the day comes when a woman can prove paternity in a court of law. However, such methods are permissible under state and fed law whereas striking your spouse is not. There is quite the gray area between abuse and discipline and we've seen in this thread people attempting to draw the line based on quantity, severity, and frequency of such discipline. I think child abuse is indicative of a pattern of behavior rather than a single incident. Then there's intent. Did AP intend to hurt his child for kicks or out of anger or was this overzealous parenting? Rice certainly intended to harm his fiance. There was no other intent or greater purpose. Unless AP is found guilty of child abuse, I don't see what place the NFL has in ruling on proper child rearing practices. Its certainly the NFL's right to deal out punishments as arbitrarily as they see fit and with no regard for consistency, coherency and precedent but that system doesn't seem to be satisfying the fans. Those of you calling for justice need to take it up with your representatives.
  9. Thats the modern family for you. A friend of mine married a woman with a 5 year old daughter. She called him "Daddy Steve" at first. Now she calls him "Daddy" which I assume puts her biological father on a "daddy [first name]" basis.
  10. Back in my day, we didn't just get disciplined physically by our parents. Any adult could deal out corporal punishment and it was pretty well accepted. I remember one day when Mr. Dinsdale caught me playing in the front yard, grabbed me by the arm and says 'I hear you've been a naughty boy, Billy'. He proceeds to split my nostrils open, saws my leg off and pulls my liver out. And I tell him 'My name's not Billy', and then he loses his temper and nails my head to the floor. Broke the unwritten law, he says. Never did find out what it was, but if Dinsdale said I did it then its good enough for me. He was a cruel man, but fair.
  11. That puts you in good company. Let me introduce you to Lonnie, Jugdish and birddog.
  12. You should focus on making long distance phone calls. Sarcasm and parody elude you.
  13. NFL players need to learn that WASPy, New England values are the only ones that count. You discipline your children with emotional aloofness and back handed compliments, not the switch. And dog fighting is unconscionable (although killing for other sport or killing nuisance animals is time honored). Dogs sleep in the same bed with you. You kiss your dog on the mouth and your wife on cheek.
  14. Classic case of battered son syndrome. I have some pamphlets you should read.
  15. The daughter-bride / father-groom relationship is pretty nuanced. It really tests the limits of our ideas regarding child discipline and domestic abuse. Who's to say whats right and whats wrong these days what with all our modern ideas and products?
  16. Your inability to determine between sarcasm and serious posts is truly remarkable. Shouldn't you be chatting with Crayonz about commies right now?
  17. This issue is certainly muddy. In the hypothetical of a child bride, its downright paradoxical. Where do you draw the line between disciplining a child and domestic abuse if you marry a 14 year old??
  18. Question is, how sustainable is our current method of winning?
  19. Let me rephrase. We all agree that its ok to discipline your child physically within certain bounds but it is not ok to discipline your spouse?
  20. So we all agree that its ok to hit children but we differ on how hard, how many times, the frequency of whippings and the implement?
  21. I knew you'd see the light eventually.
  22. After Jerry Richardson's teary statement on domestic violence he probably should cut Hardy, resign, and call for Goodell to be fired. http://www.wect.com/story/26502993/video-carolina-panthers-owner-breaks-down-talking-about-domestic-violence
  23. Cowherd picked them last week too, I think. As much as hes insufferable, his record for picking NFL games is pretty impressive.
