I really do hope this is the case. McD is a little slow to react, though

The play designs have a lot to do with how Mahomes has performed. Of course having Hill and Kelce help, as well. The point is, Reid isn't making Mahomes do something he can't do, he's letting Mahomes be Mahomes. Patrick is also a more refined and accurate passer than Josh is; Reid is playing to Mahomes' strengths. Daboll is trying to make Josh into the current Tom Brady, and the receivers into a corps that has been here for years. Notice how these plays take a long time to develop? That is a result of the WRs (and Josh) still trying to grasp the offense. Like I said, Josh has his problems, but they are exasperated by Daboll. -
You lost me at the bold highlighted. I don't buy star power is the largest problem. I think the team lacks an offensive and defensive game plan that makes sense for who the players are, is robust when all doesn't go exactly to plan, and play calls are competently made. McD and staff are the largest problem.

Thank you for pointing that out. It has been pointed out before, but people seem to forget about Sammy's lack of availability.

in that time, we really haven't had a good OC or QB. Daboll either needs to go, or be reigned in by McD. The problem is McD isn't a micromanager, so I think the problem festers until Daboll coordinates himself out of his job. This is the long, painful way of going about the needed change. With Allen, this is what, his 20th NFL start? Mayfield and Darnold, the other two QB comparisons from the 2018 draft, aren't doing much better. Should they be relegated to backup or out of the league, as well? Josh is somewhat of a project, that was known. Daboll isn't helping with his uber complicated offense that shouldn't be run at this point in Josh's career. It took Brady multiple years before he could run the E-P offense; he couldn't, and did not, do so in 2003 when they won the SB. -

Not sure i completely buy this. Josh has his issues, but I think the bigger problem is Brian Daboll. Get rid of Daboll and bring in an OC that will be able to work with Josh as he is NOW, and not with an offense of what you expect him to be two years from now. -

I don't care if it takes 3 or 5 years for this rebuild to bear fruit. My concern is that the coaching staff is hampering this rebuild and the person most responsible (McD) will not fix it since he is a big part of the problem with his losing play-not-to-lose philosophy. He wasn't ready to be a HC three years ago, and he's not ready now. -

And if we can go on a winning tear like the Ravens have, I'm ok with the loss to the Browns. -
I'm not sure they're thinking Josh isn't the guy, but they are definitely restraining him. It did look like he was playing for the FG/OT, and he didn't do that particularly well. McD tried to run all the clock off he could so he could send out Huaschoke with only a couple of seconds left. Where we saw them burn time in the huddle, that may very well have been intentional.
-
I'm not too sure McDermott is capable of doing this, or even translating it to the team.
-
Not sure the Steelers of late are a good example. They too play a loose zone and prevent defense; I've seen it too often from them since it reflects Tomlin's defensive belief. Frazier subscribes to this soft, bend but don't break, prevent defense which only ensures you lose. Frazier is not a sophisticated enough DC to beat better, modern offenses; Cleveland does not fall into that category, they just have a couple of playmakers in OBJ, Landry, and Chubb. We let them move the ball too often and are fortunate to hold them to under 20.
-
Not sure where you got 25% of the time; I agree with the previous poster. There was more than enough time and we should have been able to tie at a minimum, but couldn't. The amount of time we wasted by sitting in the huddle was the epitome of incompetence. Any offensively competent team would have won given what we had to work with.

So is Jared Goff.

Miami beat the Colts today, making a streak of two wins. The way we played today, next week in Miami is not a gimme.

Can we attract elite WRs here with Josh

Pay them enough, yeah, they'll come here -

A freak or thug? Thug...dv a couple of years ago and assaulting a security guard this summer. Freak...just look at him.

Maybe not this year, but the future seems to be looking up for the Steelers. Ben is done and the Steelers would be smart to be done with him and commit to Rudolph.

Zeker is a freak, aside from being a thug

Great point re: 5th round, so you're right on about expectations. I too think a top 10 draft pick is expected to be a day one starter and have an impact. In theory, Oliver should fit into that type of expectation. I'm guessing coming from U of Houston, he was a big fish in a smaller pond, and the NFL is a bigger adjustment than a player from say the U of Texas. This may be a judgment error on Beane; though to be fair, someone else probably would have picked him later in the first round as he had that type of grade.

Bills at Browns Post Game Post Mortem

No, they're not...and that is sad. So what to do now? Wait for the light to come on with McD that he needs to get a better grip on the offense, re-think his defense, spend more time with SpT? I don't think he really understands these other phases. He also seems too rigid to change his defense, as well as coordinator. I doubt the Pegulas are panicking right now, but they don't really know a lot about football. Plus McD and Beane are peers; neither can, or will fire the other. The last thing we want to do is start over with a brand new defense (i.e. 3-4 or different variety of 4-3) and new personnel; that is how we stay 7-9. Not an easy problem. -
Is he a bust? Too early to say that. I don't think Kyle did much (QB sacks) until late in his second or third year. I think it is clear that the FO and coaches were expecting more from Ed Oliver than what he has delivered. Some of it also falls into McD's scheme and who lines up with Oliver since he cannot generate a pass rush by himself. I think we should have drafted a bigger one tech DT.
-
I think Oliver is just not very good against the run. He needs to bulk up and get stronger as he gets dominated by the OG. Oliver hasn't been a factor in the pass rush, either. So between him being a rookie and a little undersized, Oliver isn't making any type of impact, hence decreased playing time.

Bills at Browns Post Game Post Mortem
Happy replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Browns are not a good offense, neither are the Redskins. The Eagles are good, and we got blown out. This is a bend but don't break defense, which still is having problems stopping the run, though was supposed to have been fixed. Guess not. Yes, game day management. Challenges, where (field position) and when to go for FGs vs 1st down, play calls when going for 3rd or 4th down, soft/zone defense, type of personnel executing schemes, and the schemes themselves. Defensively, McD seems to have the wrong personnel at MLB and D-line (need more one-tech DT, DE needs upgraded) running his scheme, and/or the scheme is too rigid to work consistently. This starts to explain the rush D problems and why they are not being fixed. Offensively, Daboll (It would seem) is being left to his own devices with minimal input from McD. Third and three throw a long ball? Fourteen total RB rushing attempts even though Singletary can be considered a playmaker on offense? SpT...blocked punts, muffed punts, leading to opponent scores. Did McD leave Danny Crossman at SpT coord and put a disguise on him? Offense is a concern, though due to Daboll, IMO. Josh has his young project QB issues, but Daboll isn't helping things. His offense is too complex and pass heavy for a young QB and guys new to the Bills organization. I've heard enough of this "Process" crap, which is nothing by a platitude designed to buy him more time. The players may be subject to the Process, but are the coaches? I wonder... -
McDermotts tie vs win mentality [edited title]
Happy replied to HomeskillitMoorman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That is a problem; Beane and McD are peers. It's up to the Pegulas to fire either, and unfortunately they have no idea what they're looking at; either on the field or organizationally.
