  1. Scouts have visited practices /watched games of players at various positions: ROUND 1 (1-31): 7-DE, 2-OLB, 1-ILB, 2-S, 2-CB, 2-RB, 1-QB, 1-OT ROUND 2 (32-63): 4-DT, 3-WR, 2-S, 2-OT, 2-OG, 1-TE, 1-OLB, 1-CB ROUND 3 (64-96): 2-QB, 2-WR, 3-RB, 1-OLB, 3-OL, 1-DT, 1-DE, 1-ILB, 1-FS, 1-TE ROUND 4 (97-129): 2 DT, 2 OG, 1S, 1QB, 1OC, 1 RB, 1 CB, 1 OLB, 1 WR ROUND 5 (130-162): 2WR, 1 ILB, 1 OLB, 1 RB, 1 TE, 1 DE, 1 DT, 1 LT,1 CB ROUND 6 (163-195): 1 ILB, 2OC, 1FB ROUND 7 (196-228): 1 DT, 1 OG, 1 C, 1PK, 1S, 1CB So Bills have thus far looked at DE the most in RD1, with none in RD2. DT has been examined a lot in RD2 with 3 more in the next 2 rounds. We'll have a DT next to Dareus by the end of Day 2. There is a lack of ILB here outside of Reggie Ragland of Alabama, Kentrell Brothers in RD3, and Kris Frost in RD6. This is most likely where they go to Free Agency to replace Bradham. I could say the same for OLB as only one OLB is listed after two in RD1. Four safeties have been looked at in the first two rounds, Jalen Ramsey (who falls due to injury) and Vonn Bell in RD1 and Jeremy Cash and Jayron Kearse in RD2. Cash is the most likely as he is a perfect fit for Rex's defense. Guard is listed heavily in RD2-3-4. They need to re-sign Incognito and decide if John Miller's enough on the right side. What's interesting to me is the number of RBs that have been looked at. I don't think we're moving on from Shady and Karlos, but I think we'll take a hard look at the backups. RD3 is a bit early (Tre Madden, DJ Foster), but TCU's Aaron Green in the 4th is someone you might study. Alabama's Kenyan Drake RD5 has receiving skills (which Roman likes). Glenn Gronkowski (yes, he's related) is more of a FB but his family was from the Buffalo area. Of course, with Junior declarations going on until Jan. 18, and Senior/Shrine/NFLPA Bowl games to be factored in, it's pretty early yet. This isn't a blueprint; it's a dipstick. -Astro
  2. Jaylon Smith is not falling to 18 or 19. If he does, though, he'd be on the list. He has it all: twitch, balance, versatile, quickness, instincts, playmaking ability. I'd have them in this order: Jaylon, Ragland, Floyd, Calhoun, Jack, then Cravens if we wanted a LB in RD1. I like Floyd almost as much as Ragland for the Bills.
  3. RD6 McCoy and Karlos are playing lights out, but I'd think they'd like depth behind McCoy's role--the "Lightning" part of Karlos's Thunder. It isn't Gillislee, and he sealed his fate with a fumble today. This would be a Day 3 pick, like Karlos was in the 5th. I think Boobie is history. Aaron Green, Paul James, Keith Marshall and the intriguing DJ Foster have AP strength and receiving skills, and may be available RD6. Who knows? Barry Sanders Jr.? If we were to wait and bring in a UDFA, and use RD6 to draft, say, Robert Aguayo the Kicker, then the Bills could keep Gillislee.
  4. Thanks, Bill, for doing this all year. It's my first stop after the game! Hope you have a healthy and happy New Year!
  5. TE=P6. We brought Clay in, he's on IR. We let Chandler go. Gragg's serviceable, and Mulligan gets a mulligan. Marqueis Gray could return from IR whole and fast, which would reduce the need here to P6 or P9. O'Leary's made some nice plays, as well. If the Bills get a trade-down pick, they may take a Day 3 TE who is a good blocker who can catch the ball. Who'd be there on Day 3? Of those who have had scout visits, I like Nick Vannett RD4, and don't think Kyle Carter adds anything. Two RD5 players the Bills scouts haven't been seen at include TE BRYCE WILLIAMS EAST CAROLINA and TE JERELL ADAMS SOUTH CAROLINA, and maybe TE JAKE MCGEE FLORIDA in RD6. I think they pin their hopes on Clay, Gray, O'Leary, and sign a UDFA (TE BRAXTON DEAVER DUKE 255). . http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Rankings/Top-College-Tight-Ends-2016-Draft.asp
  6. S=P4. Recent performances of our backfield are reducing this need weekly. Rambo was Player of the Game vs Jets, but Duke Williams and “CB-S” players Corey Graham and McKelvin minimize the need. Bills have been to see: S JORDAN LUCAS PENN STATE 206 (RD6-7) S-WRF MALCOLM MITCHELL GEORGIA 240 (RD7-UDFA) CB=P6. Bills and Seahawks currently have the best CB situations in the NFL, but Whaley says he'll draft one every year. I think he takes a year off, given that he has only 6 picks this year. He has good backups now in McKelvin and 6'1" Free Agent Mario Butler. Brooks is a FA, so he's on the bubble. Robey is small, but above average. I know the Bills scouts have been to Mackensie Alexander's practices (Clemson, ya know), and also Tre'davious White. Both are likely first-rounders, so that's unlikely. Day 5 possibilities whom Bills scouts have seen are: CB KEVON SEYMOUR USC 118 - RD4 CARRINGTON ARIZONA ST 145 - RD5 CB WILLIAM LIKELY MARYLAND unranked
  7. RD4. Harvin's as good as gone, Woods hasn't shown it, so we still don't have a #2 WR--the high-pointing, tall, feature WRF (unless maybe it's Dez Lewis), as well as the Harvin role. These guys are listed as WRS in DraftTek, so we may need 2. Both carry the P3 designation. It is a buyer's market for WRs, with lots of WRs declaring and fewer teams needing them than most years. RD4 is my guess, it's a buyer's market in the draft on Wrs, and my 4 favorites, Travin Dural, Nelson Spruce, Sterling Shepard, and De'Runnyea Wilson might be available there. Should Laquon Treadwell be there at #17, I'd think twice ...before drafting a lineman. Day 3 gems: WRS BRALON ADDISON OREGON (pick 133 on our board, Bills have been to practices and/or games) WRF LEONTE CAROO RUTGERS (pick 149, Bills have been to practices and/or games) S-WRF MALCOLM MITCHELL GEORGIA (240, likely moving up with his bowl game; no word on Bills scouts) WRF CHRIS BROWN NOTRE DAME (364) http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Rankings/Top-College-WRs-2016-Draft.asp
  8. OT=RD2. RD2--We're playing with one hand tied behind our backs at RT. Draft a tackle early. Before Day 2 ends. There is a lot of starters as late as RD2 this year. Whaley wants Cordy Glenn locked up at the end of the season. Per Rotoworld, Glenn allowed a career-high eight sacks in 2014, but has been one of the better pass-blocking left tackles the last two seasons. The Bills aren’t letting Glenn reach the open market, but re-signing him could prove difficult with DT Marcell Dareus and LB Nigel Bradham also in their final season. 25-year-old Glenn will command a deal in excess of Jared Veldheer's five-year, $35 million contract. Taylor Decker may be gone, but John Theus, Kyle Murphy, Germain Ifedi, or Tyler Marz would help the Bills. http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Rankings/Top-College-Right-Offensive-Tackles-2016-Draft.asp OG=P2. RD3-- Whaley hit the mother lode in Miller (though injured) and Incognito (who's 32 and a FA, but Whaley wants him, too). We need an OGOT to replace 8th-oldest player Urbik, so watch for OG Day 2, like Teofilo from Arizona State or Morris from Ole Miss. http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Rankings/Top-College-Offensive-Guards-2016-Draft.asp OC=P3. Wood is good technique-wise, but he's 29, has the 8th-biggest contract, and Whaley will soon be planning for the future. While Dan Voltz is the #1 Center prospect, I see Wood's successor as a mid-round pick like C JACK ALLEN MICHIGAN ST (168-RD6) if the Bills get a trade-down pick. They've looked at OC NICK MARTIN NOTRE DAME (113-RD4). Bills scouts have seen Allen and C RYAN KELLY (206-RD7). No pressure if they don't take one this year. They'll just wait a year. http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Rankings/Top-College-Centers-2016-Draft.asp
  9. Free Agency. We likely need backups for Bradham (a FA and not a scheme fit), Lawson (if not re-signed), and backup for Brown (who's 32nd among ILBs in number of tackles, but tied for 1st in assists). I like Tarpley, Johnson, Powell (a FA), and Steward, but they're likely not starters, so we need two more in the pipeline even if Bradham is re-signed. One may be a vet (Max Valles?), but one at the very least (OLB, ILB) may come early in the 2016 draft. ILB Reggie Ragland is a popular name in draft circles. OLBs Darron Lee and Myles Jack are also on RD1 lists. Ragland---hitter, run-pass solid, nasty, Pro offense 2 yrs Lee--versatile, fast, fearless, persistent, competitor, Sugar Bowl MVP Jack-- torn meniscus, athletic, 4.4 agility and speed, ball skills If we go this route, something has to give. With RT (Mills), DT (KWilliams), and DE (Mario) as early needs, we'll have to watch Free Agency to see if any holes get plugged to free us up for taking a playmaking LB..
  10. RD1. Defensive end is almost my #1 because Mario is our most-expensive, 9th-oldest, cap drain. Yes, he's good, but you are paying $19M for it next year, so a million bucks per this year's tackle. Bills would be spending $43,575,000 cap on D-Line next year if something isn't done. Lavar Edwards has been signed as a 3-4DE. In RD1, there are several who fit. DE EMMANUEL OGBAH OKLAHOMA STATE (may not be there when we pick, but he's raw--like Ansah was) DE DEFOREST BUCKNER OREGON DE SHILIQUE CALHOUN MICHIGAN STATE Buckner would be the best fit for Rex's system, and Shilique Calhoun would be the most versatile (a Manny Lawson swiss army knife).
  11. RD5 QB. Yes, I'm a Tyrod Taylor guy, but when Tyrod went out, we (EJ) made stupid errors. He may not be fixable. There is a lot of QBs in the draft that fit Roman's scheme and the desire for mobility and size, especially if we see some Jr's declare. I hope it isn't Connor Cook. Day 3 please. Sudfeld from Indiana sprays the ball around well, Prescott has elusiveness, Coker's more than a game manager, and Brandon Doughty has the best comp pct of anyone on Day 3. One of them (and likely 3 of the 4) will be there RD5.
  12. Great catch! We have Cook at #34 on our big board. http://www.drafttek.com/Top-100-NFL-Draft-Prospects-2016.asp I have added Cook to the above document.

  15. Thanks for the post, Bill. Always hit on my unsaid sentences. Enchiladas with chicken and chorizo are calling my name... Astro
  16. DraftTek has them at 18 http://www.drafttek.com/2015-NFL-Power-Rankings.asp I think it'll be 3 losses in the next 4 games. I hope I'm very wrong.
  17. t3/12/2015: Signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract. 2016: $1 million, 2017: Free Agent Whaley has a history of looking at skill set over position played. So yes. This also could be a FA acquisition.
  18. I'd love to hear from Bills fans about team needs. I fill in the Bills needs for DraftTek, used in their weekly mocks, and here's my thinking so far: 1=top priority, 9=no need) QB=1. Yes, I'm a Tyrod Taylor guy, but when Tyrod went out, we (EJ) made stupid errors. He may not be fixable. There is a lot of QBs in the draft that fit Roman's scheme, especially if we see some Jr's declare. RB=4. MCCoy and Karlos are playing lights out, but I'd think they'd like depth behind McCoy's role--the "Lightning" part of Karlos's thunder. This would be a late-round guy. Like Karlos in the 5th. WR=2. Harvin's as good as gone, Woods hasn't shown it, we still don't have a #2 WR--the high-pointing, tall, feature WRF (maybe it's Dez Lewis), and the Harvin role. These guys are listed as WRS in DraftTek. TE=2. We brought Clay in, and Gragg's serviceable, and Mulligan gets a mulligan. Marqueis Gray could return from IR whole and fast, which would reduce the need here. OT=2. We're playing with one hand tied behind our backs at RT. Draft a tackle early. There is a lot of good ones in RD1-2 this year. OG=4. Whaley hit the mother lode in Miller and Incognito (who's a FA). We need an OGOT like 8th-oldest player Urbik, so watch for OG Day 2, like TEOFILO ARIZONA STATE or MORRIS OLE MISS. OC=3. Wood is good technique-wise, but he's 29, has the 8th-biggest contract, and Whaley will be planning for the future. I see Wood's successor as a midround pick like Dan Voltz or Jack Allen. K=9. Our kickers are fine. Carpenter's not having his best year, but you're not likely drafting one this year. DE=2. Almost my #1 because Mario Williams is our most-expensive, 9th-oldest, cap drain. Yes, he's good, but you are paying $19M for it. Bills will spend $43,575,000 on D-Line next year if something isn't done. DT=2. Kyle Williams' injury will keep him out of 3 games. He and Incognito are tied for oldest on the team. He's a leader, he has mileage left, but that described FJax. Watch the Bills get younger on DL in 2016. LB=2. We likely need backups for Bradham (a FA), Lawson, and Brown. I like Tarpley, Johnson, Powell (a FA), and Steward, but we need two more in the pipeline even if (or when) Bradham is re-signed. S=6. Recent performances of our backfield are reducing this need weekly. Rambo was Player of the Game vs Jets, but Duke Williams, Corey Graham, and even McKelvin at S minimize the need. CB=6. Bills and Seahawks have the best CB duos in the NFL. Whaley says he'll draft one every year, but he has good backups now in McKelvin and 6'1" Free Agent Mario Butler. Brooks is also FA. P=9. Again, you aren't drafting one. Schmidt was on a cruise to the Pro Bowl before his muffed punt in the Jets game.
  19. I voted injuries. The most-injured team in the NFL just played the least-injured team in the NFL. They won. 15 Bills were on the injury report 4 days ago. In how many games so far did the top 5 Bills playmakers all play? Heck, even Cordy Glenn and John Miller were limited in practice, then Seantrel Henderson went out with a concussion in this game. If Tyrod, Harvin, Karlos and Aaron Williams were in there, and if McCoy, Watkins, and Kyle Williams were full go for the entire game, it'd been Bills.
  20. -->Bengals aren't a fraud, but their opponents have losing records (and are 8-16 overall), and haven't faced a pass rush like ours. -->Bengals are 21st in rushing; Bills are 4th. This includes a week when our RBs were Boobie, Boom, and Cierre. -->Bills lead Bengals in yards per carry, rushing yardage, rushing TDs, longest rushing play (41-28), and they've lost 3 fumbles. Bills fumbled twice but lost neither. -->Bengals have 6 sacks. Bills have 14. -->Bills defense has more tackles, interceptions (4 to 2), forced fumbles (7 to 3), lead in giveaway/takeaway (4-2), and negative play yardage. And a loud crowd that'll make it tough Sunday. -->Bills have one of the best punters in the NFL, with 10 punts landing inside the 20. Bengals have 3. Bengals have 11.8 average return yards on punts.
  21. I have the Bills going 3-1 this quarter, with the loss being this week vs the Bengals. But Dalton's no Luck, Brady, or even Mariota. The Bengals have beaten Raiders (2-3), Chargers (2-2), Ravens (1-4), Chiefs (1-4), and Seahawks (2-3). Combined, their opponents are 8-16. The Bills have beaten Luck (3-2), Tannehill (1-3) , and Mariota (1-4). Combined, they are 5-9. They held Luck to his lowest completion percentage, passing yards, and ypa this year. Then they intercepted Tanny 3 times, holding him to his second-lowest completion percentage, passing yards, and ypa. They held Mariota to the least passing yardage, lowest ypa, and lowest QBR. Maybe we have a chance.
