A Football Life-Doug Flutie
Rob's House replied to billsfaninky's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not in my mind but I guess you could make an argument. My knowledge of them is limited, but I have a hard time putting guys like Kemp who played in the 60s on even footing with players in the modern era. The game was so much faster and more advanced and the players so much more athletic by the time Flutie came along than when Kemp played. Looking back over the records and stats I guess you could make an argument for Fergie. His career wasn't that distinguished but he did have a few good seasons in there. -

Second best QB in Bills history. No question. -
Watching the Eagles O-line dominate NY after looking like raw **** in the preceeding weeks, I noticed the announcer mention that with the changes they had up front it would take some time to come together, but it looks like they've found their groove and are back on track. I was wondering if that might be the case for us. We've got 2 rookies starting and Pears playing a new position. Only 2 of our guys were playing in the same position last year and Richardson has only started 2 games. Seeing as how Marrone is an OL guy, do you think it's more likely they come together one of these weeks and start clicking or that they'll be a liability all year long?

If it's lumbar I might consider surgery. My dad had almost exactly what you described for what seemed like forever and nothing worked. Finally he got the surgery and has been much better ever since. On the flip side, I had a disk problem in my cervical spine from a basketball injury that was excruciating and constant. There was no way to position myself to relieve the pain, no pills that would help (beer helped a little), and it was accompanied by shooting pain and numbness into all my extremities. All of them. It hurt so bad I couldn't even sit in a chair and watch TV. Surgery wasn't a good option for me because of the location. I spent two to three years thinking I was going to spend the rest of my life as a cripple in agonizing pain. But then it slowly started to fade and now I live a normal life. I still have to be careful not to do anything crazy - I had to give up contact sports - and I occasionally have some mild pain or a pinched nerve, but for the most part it's not something that burdens me significantly. So for me surgery wasn't a good option. I've come to find exercise helps a lot. Now, if it was lumbar I'd have gotten the surgery and that may be the best thing for you. There's obviously no guarantee your pain will subside like mine did and your risk isn't as substantial, but I thought I'd put it out there to let you know there is hope that it could get better on its own. I guess I should have read through the thread. I think you'll be glad you went this route.

Most did not but there were some who did. And lots and lots of people wanted to give him 2 years as the unconditional starter. That's not really what gets me. I just find it amusing how many in the crowd that said you have no idea what kind of QB you have before he's played two full seasons are ripping other guys to shreds who have all of a half dozen starts under their belts with no sense of irony whatsoever.

Dude, Yes! I hate that ****. I all but eradicated it from this board, thank God. I used to see it all day every day. Now it rarely pops up. I think Elena Kagan is responsible for this crap.

Hackett not properly using Spiller & Jackson

A change at RB would be a good start. I agree with the gist of what you're saying, but with CJ it's pretty bad. It's like a QB who can't hit a 10 yard out route. He may have a great deep ball, but there are some plays that are so fundamental a player needs to be able to make them consistently regardless of whether it's ideal to his skill set, otherwise he's a liability to the team. -
Bills-Fan-4-EJ seems to be the lone crusader on this one.

You don't know that. There's a good chance he doesn't make the catch. The odds of him making that catch are less than the odds of us stopping the Pats on first and goal at the one. -
Obama Weighs in on Redskins Name
Rob's House replied to Bronc24's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The only people who care about this contrived "controversy" are white people who want to feel good about being racially sensitive and Indians who want to milk the victim status for all it's worth. The fact that this has become such a big issue shows how insanely racially hypersensitive we've become. The anti-racism impulse is so ingrained it's automatic and does not require a logical thought process. As long as we can associate something with the word "racism" it's automatically bad. It's to the point we've forgotten why we became opposed to racism in the first place. Does anyone think that the Redskins name is going to lead to discrimination, segregation, or genocide? Really? Are Indians going to have trouble fitting into society because the name Redskins? If it didn't refer to skin would anyone give a flying !@#$? I don't see the mass outrage over the Cleveland Indians or Atlanta Braves. I don't see people in Texas flipping out over being used as a Mascot. Are prosecutors protesting San Diego? The bottom line is that nobody would name their team something they thought had a negative connotation. Who do you think Tony the Tiger's favorite baseball team is? Who do you think Yogi Bear's favorite team is? If Leif Ericson's body was dug out of the ice and cryogenically restored to funcionality, what team do you think he'd cheer for? It's an honor to have a team named for your likeness. If there was a team called the Tall Skinny White Guys I'd have to bale on the Bills and jump on board. And honestly, how many people were on this crusade 10 years ago? A bunch of yahoos get some wild hair up their ass and the media jumps on board and thousands of fans dutifully follow suit and decide to be outraged because the TV told them to be. And as a part Indian (small part - Elizabeth Warren style) with an Indian wife (her dad's straight off the reservation. literally) and a part Indian child, I can say that I'm not offended at all, even a little bit, and other Indians who are need thicker red skin. -

I watched without sound so I didn't know what every penalty was, but the most egregious one that I saw was the unsportsmanlike conduct on Hughes, but they missed the FG anyway so I wasn't too upset by it. The biggest call against the offense, which may have actually cost us the game (we'll never know) was the offensive PI on Robert Woods. It was a bad call and it really !@#$ed our team, but it was one where I could understand how the Ref could reasonably think it was the right call only seeing it once at game speed. MOST of what I saw called against the defense may have been ticky tack, but wasn't egregious like some of the Detroit calls. -
I think you expect too much. Nobody's perfect. Even the elite QBs have the occasional mistake. When your detractors greatest criticism of your game is that you started at your own 26, threw 3 passes, and then the other team had it at their 39 (which sounds curiously similar to a 3 and out followed by a punt) you know you're doing something right. Yeah, I probably should have picked a different week to share that observation.
-
If you were to follow the game via shoutbox you'd think the Bills never committed a legit penalty.
-
Compared to what? I'd say, based on a two game sample, he's playing as well as or better than roughly half the league. I think that's good.

Interesting. All the most hardcore EJ Manboy fanboys think Orton sucks. Coincidence?

Hackett not properly using Spiller & Jackson
Rob's House replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, that was awful. I've been a big CJ supporter but I'm starting to think that he's just too dumb to learn. If he could slow down, set up his blocks, and then take off he'd be unstoppable. Problem is he's only got one speed. Those bounce outs would be more effective if the defense committed to the middle first, but he's already changed direction and running sideways before they even get out of position. It's awful. And when he doesn't bounce out he runs straight into a defender 9 out of 10 times. Strangely, the much slower Fred Jackson finds room in there, and it's not like he's knocking guys over at the LOS every other play. He finds a crease and takes what's there. CJ just doesn't get it, and he's a pretty old guy not to get it. I'm starting to think he never will. -

I agree they've misused the RBs, but I don't think this is a fair criticism. They opened the Houston game with three straight passes which arguably opened up the run game, then were roundly criticized for throwing too often. The problem they had was not having a QB who can pass. What I don't understand is why they start the game with the quick, change of pace, light running home run threat and then sprinkle in the hard running bigger guys. It seems to me you soften them up with the tough running, get manageable downs early, get in a rhythm, then sprinkle in CJ. The continued use of him on first down boggles my mind. At least it appeared they may be moving away from that yesterday. One can hope. -
It's funny you mention that because a week or 2 back I pulled a youtube video from his FSU days and I was surprised to see how well he played. I remember watching him before we drafted him and thinking he might be okay so I was curious why I had thought that. When I watched it I was kind of shocked to see how well he played. It was nothing that screamed surefire NFL QB, but a lot more promising that what we saw this year and most of last. He played like he was having fun, made a lot of big plays with his feet, and seemed to even be a bit more accurate with his throws. It made me think that if he played more wide open and used his legs he might be an effective QB. Sadly, he's hiding his greatest asset and playing to his weaknesses. I doubt he'll even try to be that QB again, and given his limitations I doubt he'll ever be successful as a pocket passer. It's unfortunate, but I believe that to be the case.

The biggest difference for me is that when it's 1st and 20 I feel like we might make the first down. In fact I think Orton picked up the first after getting backed up to 1st and 30 by penalties. Also, if we're down 2 scores I don't feel like the game is over. Manuel was averaging 13 yards per game on the ground. He's no longer a running QB (which is the main reason for his ineffectiveness IMO). I don't think teams were shitting their pants with fear of him taking off.

I think the Hogan hate was kind of like the Bradham hate. No one really had an opinion based on anything they'd seen, but a few people started trashing him and others read it and repeated it as though it was their own opinion, and next thing you know it's conventional wisdom among Bills fans.

When I saw the thread title I thought this was about him getting drafted by the Bills.
