  1. Mercy Mercy Mercy is amazing. Great drinking sounds. I boozeload to Natural Child: 1971, Mannequin Men: Lose Your Illusion Too, Soul Asylum: Made To Be Broken, Ry Cooder: Paris Texas soundtrack, Dr. John: Babylon, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkeybirds: Gorilla Rose and anything by The Cramps, Gun Club, Liquor Giants, Pontiac Brothers, Husker Du, Dead Moon or The Ramones.
  2. Thee Oh Sees are one of my favorite bands. Got to be careful with those guys, insanely prolific. Before you realize what's happening you notice you have like 12 of their records. It's like a weed that takes over your collection.
  3. Seconded. Ty Segall is pretty great. He records with a band called White Fence sonetimes who do some pretty awesome stuff on their own.
  4. Additional rule of thumb: if the phrase all you can eat is involved they are probably serving donkey dick. It's over by the chicken fried steak bar.
  5. My girlfriend loves Grizzly Bear, but something about them really rubs me the wrong way. They're just too precious, too buttoned down. Just real bow tie music, as an old buddy used to say. Department of Eagles are decent though. Sound isnt really my bag, but i totally get it. Much more direct and urgent than GB, which I appreciate.
  6. I listen to WTF, Marc Maron's podcast, religiously. Great conversations with stand-ups, filmmakers and musicians. Be warned though, last week's interview with Nick Cave was a snooze. Never would assume that guy was dull, but there you go.
  7. Overrated: Grizzly Bear. So obnoxious. I would ordinarily put Dave Matthews Band here, but I think we, as a society, have finally admitted they were nothing but unlistenable monkey garbage. Underrated: Crime & The City Solution. They put out a reunion album this year that just does not come off my turntable. this is probably what most people know them from:
  8. Yup! Every time I see a commercial for that filth box I throw up in my mouth a little. Ha!
  9. I can see him just wanting to be there for his city. It's symbolic if nothing else
  10. mayor is going to speak in about 10 minutes. We'll probably get some new information then.
  11. this seems to have the most up-to-date credible information: http://live.boston.com/Event/Live_blog_Explosion_in_Copley_Square
  12. New York Post is reporting a whole bunch of stuff no one else is. The sources I've been looking at (watching CNN, reading NY Times and Boston Globe) say 2 dead and 100+ wounded and no mention of a suspect. I've never found the Post to be super reliable, and these days way too much gets published premature.
  13. I have no real opinion Thatcher (although in the 80s there was a mini industry of British bands protesting her leadership that I quite enjoy....so thanks for Billy Bragg albums, I guess) but I also assumed this thread had something to do with Baroness when I clicked on it. Moral: I agree, Baroness is awesome.
  14. I totally agree. Always felt he was better than given credit for. Think for the right price it would be worth checking him out, if only for some added camp competition.
  15. We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel. It's like a nightmare set to bar rock so dumb it would make Blues Hammer vomit in embarrassment.
  16. That's a terrific little film, by the way. Highly recommend it.
  17. I was just listening to Excitable Boy this morning. Such an amazing songwriter/person.
  18. Very very cool. I'll have to check them out. One of my oldest and closest friends recently published his first novel which takes place in Rochester and Buffalo (plenty of Bills references too). It's called "Maverick Jetpants in the City of Quality" and his name is Bill Peters. http://www.amazon.com/Maverick-Jetpants-The-City-Quality/dp/1936787024/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359230836&sr=8-1&keywords=maverick+jetpants+bill+peters and here's a link to the review in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/30/books/review/maverick-jetpants-in-the-city-of-quality-by-bill-peters.html?_r=0
  19. Seconded. I deeply hope as hard as my hope muscles will let me Fitz will not start next year. But he's tough and he shows fire. He's not good enough, unfortunately, but he is exactly the kind of person I love seeing on this team.
  20. I just got the new Forgetters LP. It's the new project from Blake Schwarzenbach from Jawbreaker and Jets To Brazil. Kind of an un-political psych-y Billy Bragg. Big thumbs up.
  21. It's a list of nothing bands. Rush's influence extends beyond soundalikes. Focus on musicianship within a song structure (ie not a jam band), complex/intelligent lyrics, one of the bands that popularized the concept album, a true "word of mouth" band that became huge outside of the mainstream, etc etc. I would argue every good metal band in the last 30 years are influenced by Rush. You could probably extend that to punk/hardcore too. A prog band influencing lesser prog bands is fine, but their influence across many genres is what makes them HOF worthy.
  22. Awesome, hope it happens. Be nice to know we wont be last in the division next year
  23. I don't think that list is doing your argument any favors
