Comparison to 90s SB teams
BADOLBILZ replied to BoccesOnTransit's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not even close, talent wise. That 90's team was the best roster in the AFC for many, many years and the entire NFL for at least the first two SB runs...........well run teams could really stack rosters prior to free agency..........post free agency there is more parity.........and this roster is good but it CLEARLY lacks the star power on both sides of the ball. Josh Allen is a force of nature though..........and the QB is much more important to team success now than it was in the early 1990's........so the overall roster doesn't need to be as dominant. The 1990's teams were poorly coached.......clearly out-coached in SB's...........and their defensive scheme was weak and the offense was totally talent driven after Marchibroda left. This team is much better coached and the schemes are better and more sustainable. -
Justin Houston only got $4M as a free agent this summer..........Addison's market is probably vet league minimum.

Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season game 3
BADOLBILZ replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
THIS is a good example of why John Wawrow called you a slapdick.😂 Of course they haven't brought competition in for him........they spent a mid first round pick on him and he's by any account one of the 10-12 best MLB/ILB in the league and playing on a rookie contract. He doesn't stink..........he's the most physically gifted MLB in the league but his inconsistency and lack of big plays are undeniable. And no, the fact that he has underachieved relative to his talent and may become grossly overpaid for his performance is NOT irrelevant to the conversation. It could soon be the most important part. And the entire reserve LB corps might end up being guys the Bills signed in free agency......for decent money.........by this time next week. And you are ignorantly declaring that they haven't signed any. You don't seem to be able to think things thru before you have to emotionally post them..........it ends up being nonsense. -
It was very hot. I sit 2 rows into the shade at 1pm and then the shadows creep down during the game so we had it made........but the sunny side(visitor sideline) was basically vacant by the 4th quarter. We came out to the tailgate with 4 fingers up to let the scorched sunny-siders know we go all 4 quarters on the home side.

Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season game 3
BADOLBILZ replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hate to say it because I was a big fan of drafting him and was hoping he'd be the great cornerstone pass rusher they needed...........but the best thing that could happen would be someone like an Andre Smith having to step in for a long period and then perform at a high level and make enough plays to earn the job away from him. Probably the biggest key to the Bills defense is having two very reasonably priced playmakers at safety for all these years. They basically have both of them for the annual money that the Seahawks have in Jamal Adams alone.......and the Seahawks also expended 2 first rounders to get him. As far from expectation that he has played to this point........it's hard to envision a situation where Edmunds playing at $20M per season at MLB will be anything but a limiting factor for the team going forward. -

BADOLBILZ replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My point is that it's not the system that prevents Edmunds from making plays. He isn't an instinctive player so he doesn't get himself in position to make as many as he should.................but he gets balls thrown to him, tipped to him, fumbled at his feet.........he just doesn't make the plays when they present themselves. I went to the first open practice and watched him drop a gift wrapped interception in the 11-on-11's. It's his MO. The MLB has a lot of opportunity to make plays in this system. He was hurt early last year........but also 3 years in the book was out on him in coverage and teams attacked him scorching him for 4 TD's. He can be manipulated and if you throw at him the worst that's likely to happen is the ball ends up on the ground. If you don't make plays teams will challenge you. -

Let us know. Start at google.com. 2020 Bears + "base defense" is a good start. He did lead the NFL in tackles that season. Extraordinary! -

Meh, that's just yardage. The 2018 and 2020 defenses allowed 374 and 375 points, respectively. Middling. By contrast, the 2017 Preston Brown MLB'd defense allowed just 359...........and that was DESPITE averaging an astonishing 45 points allowed per game in the worst 3 game defensive stretch in Bills team history. I guess we just couldn't quantify Preston's impact either. The 2019 team had the easiest schedule the team has had since the league went to 16 games...........that created their low yardage + low points aberration. -

Ohhhhhhh.......ok......... let me know how your film review of these vastly different defenses goes. 😉 There hasn't been less variance between defense's in the NFL in decades. -

Well you know, the whole "his impact is hard to quantify" thing works a lot better when the results on that side of the ball are extraordinary. -

I'm not judging him against a mid-1990's MLB..........I'm judging him against his peers. There is a level of exceptional MLB's who quote "get the job done" and also make game changing plays............Edmunds is not in that level.........mainly because of the lack of big plays but the reality is that he had a 110+ passer rating against and got carved up by QB's last season. By contrast, fellow classmate Roquan Smith had a 59.6 passer rating against, 2 interceptions, 1 FF, 4 sacks and 18 TFL. Half the people arguing about how Edmunds gets a bad rap don't even know who else plays the position. Fortunately for Edmunds and his agent, most of the best MLB/ILB's are in the NFC. Edmunds is still probably a top 10 or 12 MLB/ILB.........because there aren't many above average players at the position.........it's devalued for a reason. -

Anyone who can't acknowledge that his lack of game changing plays is conspicuous is NOT being the least bit objective. I miss the weekly updates from the TSW homers on how much better off the Bills were for selecting Big Mike instead of the near universally favored Bryant McKinnie. 😆 -

1) They only play 2 LB's 90% of the snaps........they have plenty of them and an excess of depth. 2) Ridiculously wrong. They signed Klein to a rather lucrative contract. He was Kuechly's understudy in Carolina prior to going to New Orleans. They also signed Tyrel Adams this offseason coming off a 120 tackle season as a starter(and cut him early because they are flush with reserve MLB's). Andre Smith got a $2M+ per year deal and Tyler Matakevich's deal averaged $4M before it was adjusted. Ain't nobody working for the minimum in that LB corps. 3) Because they are committed to turning his All-Pro physical traits into a commensurate MLB even it it takes a 4th or 5th season. If there is only one answer, then I guess the reason that Levi Wallace didn't get any veteran or high draft pick competition is because they think he's like having another first rounder out there? The whole "he gets the job done" mantra belongs with players like Eli..........not players you invest first round picks and potentially a $20M/yr contract too. -

Excuses are what you are making. Here's how it works: - Highly invested-in young player performs below expectations - Homer fans rush to make excuses - Said player continues to underachieve and it soon becomes indisputable - fanbase begins to over-react and assign the failure of every failed play near him to said player - Homer fans try to spin the over-reactions as proof that player isn't underperforming Bottom line..........Edmunds hasn't made game changing plays...........and the excuses why he doesn't are wearing thin. -

Travis Etienne out for the season
BADOLBILZ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As I pointed out during the draft process.........Etienne had a lot of mileage on him. *Maybe* this injury happens regardless of those 800+ college touches.......touches which produced significantly diminishing returns in his final season, btw.........but round 1 RB fans need to face this reality: The best players on the field don't play RB anymore. The money has moved the stud RB athletes of yesterday the defensive side of the ball to stop the passing game..........or in some cases to WR on offense.........a guy like Etienne would have been reserve RB 25 years ago. What I find most perplexing is why people over-valued his speed/quickness numbers etc...........if he played CB or WR with those measurables at his size, he might have been a late round pick or even UDFA. Not to say he wouldn't have carved out a niche at another position but you don't put a #1 on that player anywhere but at RB. And then the Jags moved him to WR. -
The 2nd best team in the AFC East is…
BADOLBILZ replied to BillsFan619's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's a long season and in every McDermott year they have had a stretch of "dog days" where they didn't look right for a stretch of 3-4 games and lost some of them. Last year, it was October.........where they got hammered by the Titans, looked like crap on offense against the Chiefs, labored against the Jets and needed Justin Zimmer with a last second forced fumble to prevent New England from upsetting them at home. 4 years of past history under McD suggests that they will likely have a run like that again this year........and hopefully they get out of it 2-2 again. Assuming that they will remain focused for 17 games and not get upset or lose to a team they may be favored over is not very realistic. -
Bills sign RB Kerrith Whyte and CB Tim Harris
BADOLBILZ replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As I said with Antonio Williams..........straight line runners are easiest kinda' backs to find........so not surprising they were able to find one with otherwise good RAS numbers in the middle of preseason. Being able to utilize wiggle-free backs definitely simplifies the process of keeping the RB room occupied with ultra-low investment guys that might actually be able to gain some yards for you in your system. -
Seachange attitude towards Bills fans
BADOLBILZ replied to Pete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What's with you and trying to jump into threads to pretend "nobody said that" or "that never happened"............you weren't even part of any of these conversations.😂 @PromoTheRobot spent years shaming quitters like you(he drives just as far and has extra tickets, not just his own). And of course, would really lay into local fans who weren't buying BS like "cash to the cap". Point out a type of Bills organizational ineptitude and he'd be the first to point out that "Detroit is worse" and what a bunch of ingrates Bills fans were. It was entertaining. As for your reasoning for quitting.........you posted on TSW that you quit because you were fed up........the part about the "business decision" was a later add on after I started busting your balls about it. Shoulda' lead with that........quitters never win. 😉 -
Yeah, and at pick #30 my preferences were: 1. Rousseau 2. Marshall 3. Eichenberg I would have been in disbelief if they got both Rousseau and Marshall. Thisclose. People are a bit over-geeked about this WR corps...........they are very good but a lot of it is the well established system and the QB...........if you work under the assumption that you don't want to waste Diggs running 9 routes all game then there is a lack of a guy who can physically stretch teams deep. They might be able to get away with just scheming and route-running enough to threaten teams with the deep ball like they did with Davis last year..........but don't really have a guy opposite Diggs who you gotta' keep a safety deep or wide to one side for.
-
Yeah almost everyone who was initially disappointed backed off.......perhaps as people realized that the pick was roundly well received and explanations of why he was taken and the perspective for why he opted out or might not have looked like a conventional pass rusher were made. A lot of people had Rousseau written off because of his disappointing workout numbers and taking the season off. Like I said though, no "ardent" hate really from regular posters............but it is concerning that people still want to take players at positions of lesser import when there is talent at big $ positions and a crying need to boot. I'm not leaving a potentially elite pass rusher on the board for a 216# LB.
-
Well........a 5th round pick wasn't getting a trade-up done there............so blame Beane for trading for Stefon Diggs @DJB.😉 They could have traded the pick they used on Spencer Brown and possibly got up 9 spots.........but they needed to address the offensive tackle position with youth and I think Brown could prove to be a very valuable pick. I was more of a Terrace Marshall guy with that pick...........the Bills just missed a chance at him without a trade-up. Not a huge Basham fan.........I thought he was kinda' maxed out pushing 24 years of age and would end up being Shaq-esque relatively low impact.........played a little better than I expected so far. Also worth noting that @H2o was one of the bigger critics of the Rousseau pick(although there really weren't any ardent ones among regular posters, @BarleyNY was probably the most fervent of the regulars......and the ones who hated it most seemed to be recent joiners so might even have been some trolls). JOK might become a very good player but you don't pick hybrid LB/S when you need talent at premium positions.

We need to cut 5 players. Who are they?
BADOLBILZ replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lamp not being able to sustain the momentum of playing all 16 games last season is a disappointment. Talent-wise, he might be their best OG.........was hoping he'd lock up that LG spot for this season.
