So what do you do with the RB that you used a 2nd round pick on and is averaging 5.7 yards per carry? Give them the same split Cook has with Singletary? Take the ball out of the hands of your QB to average about 2-3 yards less per play than throwing it at a 7.6 yards per attempt clip? For guys like Jeremiah it's just a thoughtless pick. The Bills have a franchise QB who has taken a beating the past two seasons but the answer isn't to run the ball more. It's block better and give him more receivers who win matchups so he can go back to being that guy he was in 2020 who was making huge plays in the passing game while also completing nearly 70% of his passes and looked like he had 15 elite years in front of him.

Just the facts. From 2000-2004 Moulds averaged a massive 150 targets per season.......he was given a ton of opportunity.........he is what he did.......no excuses necessary. The post merger Bills receiver who doesn't get enough love is easily Andre Reed. He averaged 13.9 yards per catch for his career........8.3 yards per target and caught about 60% of his passes. All much higher than Moulds in addition to dwarfing his overall numbers. Andre Reed had 4 productive seasons in the NFL before the age that Moulds decided to show up and play for the first time in his career(age 25).........and he was still putting up big yards per target and per catch numbers several years later into his career than Moulds........even with the likes of Billy Joe Hobert and Todd Collins at QB.

When people try to re-write the past I set it straight. Moulds picked a GF up by the neck and slammed her into the wall trying to choke her out on a Buffalo campus.........dodged his paltry child support in MS.........he kept the Bills attorney very busy early in his career and there was a lot of speculation that he would be cut outright heading into training camp of 1998. Also reviled for spitting in opponents faces. Kind of a scumbag. Certainly not the kind of guy that people should go out of their way to make excuses as a player for. He's best kept compartmentalized in the era he played in. His domestic violence issue alone would have kept him out of the NFL today. Well yards per target and yards per catch are different things now, aren't they? Feel dumb? You should. As I said.........that 1998 season was the best by a Bills receiver ever. Some prisoners of the moment think Stef Diggs' seasons were better but Moulds was just amazing that year. Unfortunately, being the blockhead that he was he went and put on 10 pounds of muscle, mostly in his legs, that offseason and came into 1999 noticeably slower and lost that YAC aspect that he had in 1998.

Andre Reed wasn't in a RB's frame. He was 6'2" with long arms and huge hands. Same height as Moulds but a larger catch radius and much more elusive after the catch. Moulds 1998 season was unreal. He averaged 11.8 yards per target that year. Best season by a Bills WR ever. But he quickly dropped off and steadily declined by about a yard per catch each year. By the time he turned 30 that was down to yards per target figure was 6.4.........despite having a big armed QB throwing him the ball 10x per game. Easily the most overrated player in Bills history. Very good but the fact that there are people out there that think he'd be the best WR in the NFL today is just asinine. Stef Diggs could run circles around Frankenmoulds.

I literally compared 33 year old Andre Reed with Todd Collins to Moulds. Reed was just a far better NFL receiver. Moulds was a stiff, over-muscled bully-ball receiver. He had no nuance and not much skill and was fed the ball more than any Bills WR........a still record 180 targets one season.......and yet some ignorant fans act like he was under utilized or not given the opportunity to put up numbers. That's absurd. WR1's are often given more opportunity than they deserve when they don't have a QB who can get to his 3rd or 4th reads. See Josh Gordon's 1 great season. See 2015 DeAndre Hopkins before Watson. Reed was a no doubt HOF player. He wasn't a product of Kelly and Thomas........he probably got LESS action because the Bills were leading the league in rushing during those SB runs. You need the skill and you need the longevity. Moulds only had the skill for a few years and then he wasn't that type of player any longer. It's not like he played 10 years at a high level. Didn't happen.

For some people the need for difference makers at premium positions isn't seen as important for some reason..........so if you think you need a RB, what can I say?........there are still desperate NFL teams with GM's/Coaches on short leashes that still do it(usually pretty soon before they are fired)........so until that stops there will always be some way for fans to justify it despite it being clearly illogical. So I will say this.........before people fall for the notion that THIS RB is different..........remember that Pacheco of the Chiefs ran for 3.9 yards per carry as a senior(not much below his feeble 4.3 ypc career average) at Rutgers and entered the NFL and ran for 4.9 ypc and over 800 yards for the Chiefs. You won't see players at premium positions with that kind of production and low draft pick status breaking out for the first time in college or pro like that as an NFL rookie. It's by far the position on offense most reliant on the other 10 players on that side of the ball to succeed. So take the college results and tape with a pile of salt as RB's go...........and then remember how little overall impact, hell even just first contract impact, that most 1st round RB's have produced for the team that selected them in the past 20 years.

What Gabe could learn from Moulds is how to be a mean SOB with the ball in the air. By 2001 Eric Moulds was really struggling to separate from CB's but when Bledsoe came in the next year he just kept throwing it to him and Moulds would bash CB's on 50/50 balls. He would assault those dudes. The NFL has decided to go back to old school pass defense rules this year and the physicality has really taken a toll on Gabe. If you see a DB getting a little physical with Gabe, he has a hard time getting his focus back on the ball when he's gotten away from the contact let alone THRU contact. He is getting testy about the perception that he's a ball dropper though...........one of our group asked to him to catch a damn contested pass after that series where Allen threw 2 straight go routes to him and Gabe pointed angrily and told him to go f*ck himself. I like that spirit!

Andre Reed was a much smoother athlete with a lot better hands than Moulds.........and a much better YAC guy(the best in the NFL in his prime) and that's why he was still putting up big ypc numbers at age 33 with the likes of Todd Collins as his QB. Moulds 1998 was the best season a Bills WR has ever had.........but he peaked in that breakout year at age 25 and the decline was steady and noticeable and he was just a hard handed possession receiver by age 30. It's an insult to Andre Reed to be compared to Moulds.

Yeah he might be the 2nd or 3rd best RB in the NFL but yet he could be the 6th most important player on their offense. That should tell you something..........RB is generally the least important individual player on offense in the game today. Regarding the draft: As I have been saying for a couple decades on TSW........the draft is a process not just an annual event. You don't stray from your process from year to year. To put a finer point on it.........the Bills first round pick at this stage is perhaps their only chance to acquire a player who could become a $20M-$30M per year market value premium position player.

Those losses were rough but we used to have some hilarious stories on here posted about Dad's freaking out and smashing TV's and sh!t like that. The lessons I took were first that Buffalo could make it to a SB regardless of how incompetent Ralph was(which was something many Bills fans doubted)............and that it was fair to expect success from your team.........and that better coaching and sharpening your team against top competition during the season/playoffs are likely to make a big difference in the SB itself.

Maybe about the same yardage-wise. The Bills fed Moulds the ball relentlessly........more than they do Diggs now. Aside from his amazing year in 1998 Moulds wasn't nearly the route runner at receiver that Diggs is........so he'd have been WR2 playing the Davis role.

I think he does a good job getting low on his run blocks versus DE's, on the move and blocking down inside. His biggest issue are the slow feet, IMO. And that wasn't anticipated. On paper(RAS) he looks like a very good LT prospect and I think he showed more athleticism early in 2021 before the back injury caused him to miss time.

Yeah I think that seemed a given when we saw him play early last season. Very high ceiling. But since his back issues became publicized and he started missing time his trajectory in pass pro has flatlined. Contrary to his RAS profile his feet are lethargic at the snap and that can be very much a result of back pain and stiffness. I mentioned in another thread that, either way, he might be a RT only. The Bills tried to move Erik Pears to G in 2014 and he basically spent the season getting jacked up and pushed into the backfield. Niners moved him back to RT and he finished out his career with 16 starts at RT in 2015.

He's a nice complement to a roster with a lot of dynamic passing game play makers while playing across from the league's best and most physical defense. But he's had just three 1,000 yard rushing seasons in 6 years..........and the Niners didn't spend the 1st round pick on him either. On a per-play basis.........he's actually been slightly less productive running the ball than Devin Singletary in their careers............and while he is a really good receiver for a RB his per play numbers are well below that of expectation for a good slot receiver. The team that did use that first rounder on him only got worse as an organization for investing so much in him.

I will say that it's excusable that fans are just ball watchers who don't understand how the LOS impacts the game or why edge/island positions are so individually valued/important. The Bills problem until his death was that their owner Ralph Wilson was a ball watcher and couldn't get himself enough RB's.

No, it's clearly not about balance. It's just about outscoring the opponent............and that's done primarily thru the passing game.

That guy doesn't exist. When an NFL defense wants to stop the run and knows it is coming there isn't much any RB can do about it. How many times people gotta' see Derrick Henry fizzle out late in the season to understand that even the most talented RB of his generation can't consistently change games once the playoffs arrive? Too many RB lovers still living in the 20th century.

The position matters A LOT with regard to BPA. RB's are the least important individual players on offense........no position requires more to go right at so many other positions for them to be successful. Additionally, the RB obsessed get continuously fooled by the quality of these modern versions of the position. They may look like a 10 year bell-cow RB of old but they are the Barry Foster and Kenny Davis of yesteryear. Guys who can't make it at other positions and lack the ability to sustain more than a fraction of the workload of RB1's of yesteryear. That's why these RB1's flame out at 26 instead of 30 now. Exceptions are few(Derrick Henry and that's about it right now). When Willis McGahee IV is drafted as an edge rusher in 4 years maybe some of you will start to realize that the RB position doesn't get those kinds of players any longer. They are steered to defense or the passing game on offense.

Basham and Epenesa are DL. You are responding to a post about the need for OL. RB is not a premium position.........using early picks on non-premium positions is a recipe for regret. When you reach the point where you are drafting late 20's or early 30's every year and you are paying a franchise QB you really gotta' get premium position players outta' those early picks. The Bills got lucky a few years ago when KC drafted a RB in round 1. This past draft they went DE and CB1 in round 1......both premium positions...........and then were able to find excellent value later in the draft at lesser positions like RB and TE. They got a Cook-type player in Pacheco who is a stud RB in round 6. Pacheco might actually have been the best player in college football but being a RB........a position where success relies mostly on blocking.........he had terrible numbers and fell under the radar.

Yeah they guaranteed him an extra $26M to get him to report to the Bills..........then McBeane had to give him $2M to keep his mouth shut and be a good soldier in summer of 2017. Be nice to have that cap space back about now. Even just the $2M McBeane wasted. The Eagles had already given him a good contract that wasn't set to expire until 2017. Bills had him under contract for 3 years when they acquired him.

Why do people go so far out of their way to watch/listen to "FS1" and those generic/knockoff brand versions of ESPN talking heads?

Got the figure from Lester Holt on NBC news last night. Point is.........not being able to afford it doesn't prevent people from spending anyway if they want it. And people who can afford more also don't always spend that way. I didn't have two nickels to rub together when the Bills were in the SB last and almost went anyway. I'd have a beer with you but we are in a club area not sure if they allow normal fans. 😉 My understanding is @SoMAn would be joining us if the game happens.

Yeah one of the guys in our group bought 6 in upper deck and figures he will sell any he doesn't use for $1K apiece and make a profit. That wasn't his intention......he will probably give away a couple to his friends kids who are too young to otherwise afford it........and maybe some of our tailgate group will buy the others.
