Don't understand this PBM. Jalen Carter is maybe the best player on D in this years draft. He's going 1 or 2. Agree you can expect more from a # 9 pick than we have gotten from Oliver but in his draft year to me Q. Williams was a legit top 10 pick.

Tremaine Edmunds will test free agency
starrymessenger replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
VE is a good suggestion but 3M per will not get it done. At that price the Cowboys would only be too happy to sign him. He played for peanuts in 2022 to prove he deserved a good contract. -
Maybe I'm just a worry wart but my sense of it is that although Josh is quite possibly the most physically gifted athlete currently playing the position, his game is at risk of deteriorating. I suspect that Josh needs to be coached hard with his OC on him pretty much all the time. However this is not like M. Dareus. Josh is smart and hard working and takes well to the coaching he receives. It's just that he's a young player with an extremely difficult assignment. Playing QB is hard enuf under any circumstances. It's that much harder when you are asked to bear an unreasonable burden of responsibility. It's hard for fans to make accurate evaluations of most football professionals. So I could be wrong, but my impression is that Dorsey is unable to give this O what it needs in the way of a coherent plan and scheme. Wasting prime years of Josh's career would be bad enuf, but actually seeing Josh regress is at least as worrying. Due probably to his personality and the unusual career path Josh has taken Josh's game is always at risk to deteriorate. He needs a really good OC.

Maybe this raises a difficult question. It's definitely possible, though perhaps unlikely, that both Robinson and Jalin Hyatt, the premier deep threat in this year's draft, are both still on the board at 27. What do you do in a case like that? Hyatt looks to be very similar to J. Williams in last years draft. Robinson is arguably the best player per position in this years draft.

In Gannon’s defence Fangio mainly advised the Eagles offensive staff. Maybe he should have spent more time with his protege. Chiefs actually got much more valuable outside advice from Doug Pederson who told a Bieniemy that Eagles D always cheated and bit hard on motion. The result was the play design that resulted in two TDs and a winning field goal.

Not sure why the inquiry should be limited to teams with franchise QBs, except that then there will be fewer examples. Excellent rhetorical technique. Seriously, I think it’s probably happened a fair bit but not much comes to mind and I’m too lazy to research it. But even just looking at whats happening now there are a few examples: Schottenheimer to Dallas, LaFleur to the Rams, Moore to the Chargers. And didn’t Press Taylor move to Jax recently (from Indy)? And what about Hackett going to Green Bay. That Rodgers guy is pretty franchise like as QBs go. Of course teams also fill that position internally and if thats what you are saying I agree. I hope that you arte not arguing that because the Bills have a talented young QB Dorsey was automatically a good choice. Right now it looks more to me like he is OC because he was a spare part in Carolina for five or six years.

Problem is having a handful of Jersey does not mean that JuJu was held within the meaning of the rule. If just grabbing a Jersey was enuf to make out the infraction, the rule would not also require that the hold materially obstruct the receiver. JuJu’s movement was not impeded or obstructed. The jersey was “held” consistent with the ordinary dictionary definition of the word. But that in itself is not sufficient to establish the infraction, except in refs mind.

You are exactly right. I visit other message boards and I usually come away with the impression that this one is better, both for courtesy, restraint and level of analysis. Its not that there aren’t good posters elsewhere, it just like there seem to be more here.

The flag was late. Wonder if it was thrown only after Pat starting jumping up and down?

Josh Allen massive favorite in odds to win 2023 NFL MVP
starrymessenger replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall
I agree that his is the best skillset for playing the position, in terms of physical ability. His intangibles and maturity are admirable. When he is disciplined it is apparent that his processing is above average and I've seen him get the ball out as quickly as Burrow, though not so much in 2022. Thing is Josh is a young player and also one whose career perhaps surprisingly did not benefit from a normal progression (given his talent). He needs to continue his development under a talented, tough, uncompromising coach who is pretty much on his case all the time. Mahomes has had that. Josh has not and there is no one on this staff capable of giving him that. People have mentioned the risk of missing the window. What worries me more is the potential deterioration of quarterbacking skills. -
Bradbury doesn't write or interpret the rules. The word "holding" when defining the infraction in the rule book is what they call "a term of art" meaning, simply, that it is given a specific meaning. That meaning may or may not reflect the ordinary common conceptions associated with the word. Under the definition in the rule book it is indeed possible to "hold" without causing an infraction. Only if the "hold" materially restricts or impedes the receiver is there reason to throw the flag. In looking at the play there is a point where Bradbury has a hold of JuJu's jersey as he breaks laterally (same route as Toney and Moore TDs earlier) and starts to head upfield. But it was more like a pinch and JuJu is a big strong guy. To me it is quite obvious that this did not impede or slow his movement. He takes a full stride. Judging from his reactions, he didn't even know he was held. The NFL really has to change the way it manages officiating. I actually feel sorry for the refs. Its not humanly possible to always make the right calls in the middle of live action.

So according to how the NFL defines a hold it's the use of hands or arms to materially restrict etc...What the rule maker is saying here is that holding is often a judgement call and he or she is instructing the referee to use his judgement in deciding whether the use of hands or arms was material in impacting the result of the play. In other words, it is absolutely permitted for a DB to use his hands and arms, which means having them on the receiver, provided he did not materially obstruct. I think it's fair to say that a lot of so-called "ticky-tak" holding calls are in fact properly not holds as defined. Interpreting the holding infraction this way also better conforms with other, similar rules like the one that permits even material obstruction within 5 yards of the LOS. In looking at the play it looks to me like JuJu was not materially impeded. I don't think he was getting to where that ball landed. PM may have jumped up and down but JuJu wasn't calling for a flag. He knew the ball was overthrown or, as some have suggested, he just ran a terrible route.. What this amounts to to me is a very bad exercise of judgement/discretion by the referee, a proper exercise being mandated by the rules. But what more can you expect from a guy whose day job is selling car batteries. I hope for his sake he's good at that.

He's a long strider who can achieve reasonable speed but he has little explosion or sudden change of direction ability as well as a very limited route tree. Some see him as a priority free agent. if the Bills are prioritizing O-line early or use 27 for a surprise selection ie. RB, a guy they might consider in Rd 2 or possibly even Rd 3 (depending upon the combine results) is Marvin Mims. He's not big but he plays bigger than his size and has done well playing on the outside last two years. He is absolutely a vertical threat and would be a good choice for WR 2. He's a very good route runner, is a hands catcher, wins contested catches, has a knack for high pointing the ball, is great after the catch.
-
I think he's probably a first rounder and winds up in Dallas if they don't resign or tag Pollard and Bijan is off the board. I think Gibbs is as talented as Robinson but not as desirable because he's 20 LBs lighter. He's the type of player that I'm sure intrigues KC, although they maybe don't need help at that position. To me he's the same type of back as Cook, except faster and 20 LBs heavier. He has good hands. I like the player enuf to wonder if the Bills could convert him to receiver.

Super Bowl Pre-Game thread. (Chiefs vs. Eagles)
starrymessenger replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
Well it's neither here nor there at this point but my view has been for quite a while this year that the Eagles would beat the Bills if we made it to the final. I certainly agree that the Bengals would be a better matchup for Philly.than are the Chiefs but I'm not ready to say that the Eagles front will be unable to bring some pressure PMs way. I think you will be playing a better team than you have seen so far in the playoffs. Anyway congratulations on again making it to the Championship. Must be a real gas. Wish we were there instead of you lol. -

Wow. 31-10? I think you are selling Philly short. I expect a good close game, not the blowout you envision. -

Or maybe they think he's Aaron Donald, the most disruptive 280 LBs on the planet. -
I'm not really partial to the argument that the players' inability to execute, caused by a lack of talent, by itself accounts for the difficulties experienced by the team in 2022. I don't think the narrative begins with the playoffs, though problems are more likely to surface then. It's the coaches job to get the team ready to play and they seemed unprepared for a good part of the year. Injuries to key personnel was certainly a factor affecting team performance but not the only problem. Injuries can derail your season and are unavoidable but if no progress is made in 2023 I think the staff may lose the locker room. That would likely bring things to a head in a hurry and force Peg's hand. Just a personal view of course and one with which many disagree but right now I have little confidence in this staff making things better. Changing a team's philosophical approach can be like doing a 180 with an aircraft carrier. This typically occurs only after a new staff is put into place. The current crew has a reprieve for 2023. Unless they are able to make good with this opportunity and if a year from now, or sooner, we are having the same kinds of discussions, then I think it will be high time for them to leave and for the team to have a fresh start.
