Geno Smith signs with Giants

Agree. Not a likeable guy but in terms of potential for playing the position he was always light years ahead of EJ. He's got a long way to go tho and a lot to prove. -
Prospect Watch: Mitch Trubisky QB, UNC
starrymessenger replied to Maury Ballstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
JMO (and most likely unqualified at that) but I believe if he is there at 10 the Bills will take him as the QB who best projects success at the next level (though not year 1, but we have a bridge starter). To me what he projects are exactly those abilities that are hardest to find and to teach. Almost every college QB prospect carries risk when projected to the bigs, but you need to take the leap of faith. I think he is off the board when our number is up, so it makes sense to talk WRs, S and even TEs. -

Jay Cutler for backup?

Gotta be Howard or a S in round 1

Agree. Never understood the criticism of Clay. Quite possibly the best hybrid TE in the game. He is a huge contributor in the run game. I have no problem with him as a pass catcher. He is good underneath and can stretch the field reasonably well. How many times have I seen him tear through the seam all to no avail. How many times has he been under or over thrown. Lots. Its not on him. -
Andre Holmes officially signed
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well I'm a Bills fan and I don't think that. To me he is a WR 3 or, ideally, a WR4 who is a good STs player. He is an upgrade to JH and a good signing. The #2 WR is likely about to be drafted IMO, either in the 1st or 2nd round. -
Agree. Also its normal and prudent to basket with your forearms a bit to catch a ball thrown over your head or shoulders. Doesnt mean he cant or doesnt use his hands. To the contrary he looks like he might have strong hands when competing for balls. Wonder how quick he is off the line (straightline speed not a problem obviously) and how he deals with the press. Lots of questions.

I think the WR signings have been positive. These guys are capable of contributing and bring other things to the table like STs and theyhave useful life left to their careers. I think that if we go Davis or Williams at 10 the Bills have the makings of a very, very good NFL receiving corps. Thing is you might more be planning for the future because of Tyrod. What good is a ferrari without a motor? I think they maybe go S instead if one of the two is still on the board when they pick. -
The storyline isthat Bama did not know how to use him to advantage. With him the issue is not talent, its desire. Never had the intimidating demeanor of a Bama player. I don't care if he has All pro tools. You need the burning will to win to succeed at this level. If he does in fact have it the he is the best TE prospect in years and would not be a bad choice at all at 10 (though prolly not what I would do). If he doesnt have it, he will underform. There will be some top talent on the board at 10 so whatever direction they go we should get a very good player/prospect. As long as the Bills dont surprise everyone by outsmarting themselves. Has been known to happen. Remember Ngata.

Listenbee has a chance to turn into something IMO. Some say he might have gone in the 3rd had he not been injured. I think that may be a stretch but he would have gone higher. Some say he is a body catcher. I disagree. He can and does use his hands. Tracks the ball very well. He is a burner with a sturdy physique. Concern for me is a non-existent route tree, not sure if he can be quick enuf out of his breaks and I wonder why he does not get better separation on go routes with his wheels. Could be a function of his limited routes and opposition putting their fastest corner on him. Not really banking on him but I think he has a chance to contribute. Hope so. Time will tell.

Seems WR at 10 for sure
starrymessenger replied to KellyToughII's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
WR at 10 is also my guess as most likely, esp if the S are gone. I've got this funny feeling that Whaley has a man crush on OJ Howard however even tho I feel we probably have enuf to work with at the position. Howard would be my "surprise" pick at 10. -
I've only seen him play half dozen times or so but I was impressed with him. Agree about the flags but he is a red ass ballplayer on the field and I really like that competitive spirit. It may be two sides of the same coin but if he can grow up a bit shed the flags and keep the will to win he looks to me like a really good prospect. To me a fifth would be a very good risk/reward profile. I will be interested to see where he goes.
-
Well why do you say that and how can you be so sure.
-
Too fat to push away from the table I guess. When he goes camping the bears hide their food.
-
If we haven't already pulled the trigger on someone else I have a hard time passing on him if he is there in the fifth. Looks like a very talented QB to me. I don't care if he's a little crazy as long as he's not young Richie batsh*t crazy.

Andre Holmes was a good pickup
starrymessenger replied to BuffaloBud420's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's the good pickup that wasn't (unfortunately). Would have been an upgrade to JH, who some are sad to see leave. Has the physicality that JH just doesn't. Its football after all. Oh well. -
Sure. I hear you. Both prospects still have a lot to prove. CD was a man amongst boys but so was a certain recent Raider of note. And what big time college programme did TO graduate from? Almost 100% of the time you have to project how a guy will transition based on the skill set you think you see. Thats why the draft is a crap shoot. I think CD will develop into a premier WR in the bigs in a couple of years, maybe along the lines of J. Nelson ( who I know was a second round pick). And he may well be better than that. JMO.

Idk. We do not appear to have many (if any) options. So in the circumstances I am in the camp of those who hope that Tyrod's most glaring shortcomings as a passer are at least partly due to the fact that his development as an NFL passer was hindered by scheme, a depleted WR corps, playcalling, and what in the short term appeared to the coaches to give us the best chance of winning (probably with justification). My hope is that the new staff will have more success in bringing him along. For now though, in spite of his having adequate arm strength and being a phenomenal athlete, I have seen exactly zero indication that he is capable of making the harder throws with any consistency that is the hallmark of an NFL passer. McCoys comment that he is a RB playing QB is a little harsh IMO but not far off the mark. If thats the right conclusion though it will never be good enuf. The Bills have signed him up though so maybe the coaches think they can work with him to up his game. If that is right then if we can shore up our WR corps some really good things are in store for this O.

I tend to agree with you. Williams is a blue chip prospect to be sure but he is no Calvin Johnson (though he may be another Dez Bryant). Something north of 4.5 was what I expected from him but given his game there is nothing wrong with that. His neck injury is a concern for some though. Some also question CDs breakaway speed but though we wont get to see it now even at his pro day my guess was that he was going to run sub 4.5. and a good 5/100s better than Williams at least. There are also questions concerning his ability to separate against top level coverage viz Wisconsin and OS but he is a very good route runner and explosive out of his breaks. He has a habit of running into coverage at times but this is probably just a reflection of the physicality of his game and can be coached out of him along with the other little nits (assuming you are a believer). For me Davis is the more complete receiver who can do everything you want and need for him to do at a high level. Neither guy is a true # 1 immediately from the get go but both can reasonably be expected to grow into that role in a couple of years. On teams with an adequate passing attack or better I think CD is the better option and were it not for the fact that Tyrod is our QB I think he'd be the perfect # 2 opposite Sammy. Thing is maybe Williams might be the better target in the short run given what appears to be the Bills situation under center.

Prospect Watch: Mitch Trubisky QB, UNC
starrymessenger replied to Maury Ballstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah 2008 was a funny year. Cudos to the Pack for targeting J. Nelson. Thought Jackson falling to the second was strange given the very strong endorsement he received from Jerry Rice, who knew him well. Corey Davis is the real deal IMO. Does absolutely everything at a high level and does not appear to have any limitations or flaws to his game. Rare talent.
