What young talent was devastated? Watkins for Gaines? They are the same age Plus we got a 2nd rounder Darby for Matthews? Same age Plus we got a 3rd rounder Seymour for Klay? Same age, Seymour was a JAG and we traded him for another JAG Jwill?? If you want to call him a talent, fine. But he wasn't considered to be much of a talent from both the Bills perspective and virtually every other team in the NFL. Ragland for a 4th rounder? Ragland may or may not end up being a good player but he certainly wasn't as good of a fit for 4-3 than a 3-4 and he is coming off of major knee surgery which you would think makes him an even worse fit for a 4-3 LB. He was traded to KC and now been taken off the active roster so clearly he isn't viewed as ready at this point. So what is this talent that has been "devastated" that you speak of? Because the facts say that the moves that have been made, will bring in more young people than what was already here.

Extreme Moneyball - Bills version
Magox replied to IgotBILLStopay's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd agree that it is, but I think there are some evaluators who are more often right than others. And it's not just a matter of who is better but how each player fits into what they are trying to do. Which is why it's very important for scouting, management and coaches are all on the same page. Continuity goes along way with this which we know is something we haven't had in a long time. -

Bills' Roster Cuts to the 53 Man Limit

Frazier is not in charge of personnel decisions and I'm sure he meant what he said. Beane/McD from their perspective saw an opportunity to upgrade and they did. Business decision -

While I like the idea of getting a leg up on the competition via more draft choices, he basically implies that he believes talent evaluation is overrated. With that I disagree -

Not you per se, but the reaction we've seen, specially the day he was cut. You would have thought we got rid of the 2nd coming of Jim Brown. It's clear that McD/Beane and apparently the vast majority of the NFL didn't value him the same as some of our fans. Personally, I'm not that high on Tolbert, but I get what they are trying to do. If I was given a choice of who I would rather have as my primary back up, Jwill or Tolbert, I'd choose Jwill hands down. But that wasn't the calculation. My suspicions are that they are going to use Tolbert in different sorts of capacities then that if Jwill had been on the team. Special teams, short yardage situations, blocking, receiving what have you. And I'm guessing that they didn't believe that there wouldn't be that much of a drop off from the typical backing up Shady carrying the ball functions from Jwill and whoever else they have pegged for that role, which I'm guessing is Banyard. Which Banyard is thought of as a better blocker, receiver, special teamer with more speed. I don't think the decision really came down to Jwill and Tolbert, I think it boiled down to Jwill and Banyard. -

There is nothing wrong with being a JAG. I like Jwill, I think he's a decent RB, who has a little bit of quickness, ok moves and can break tackles. But he has no breakaway speed, no break your ankle moves, not a bull dozer, doesn't excel in special teams, not a fantastic blocker or receiver. Just a decent skilled back who deserves to be on someone's NFL roster. That's my opinion of him. -

How about not going ape **** over cutting a JAG and seeing how the season plays out? Sound reasonable? -

I answered this with my previous post. The problem is that you are viewing this through the wrong lens, at least from the perspective of this regime. Also, I don't share your view that he was someone with any real differentiating "potential". I see him as a JAG. Which isn't a bad thing, every team needs quite a few of them, but that's how I saw him. -

That's not the calculation. We are talking about two different shaped pegs. JWill is more of the sort of back that you expect basically just run the football. Tolbert is more of a short yardage guy, who is a better receiver, blocker and special teamer. We aren't talking about Tolbert fulfilling the same roles that Jwill would have had, but more that the calculation the Bills made was that between the RB stable they currently have that they didn't believe there would be much if any of a drop off in overall carrying skills and more value with the guys they chose in blocking, receiving and special teams. Maybe they made the wrong decision, but that was the calculation. I happen to think they could be right as I don't see much of a difference typically from your 30th ranked RB's in this league to your 200th ranked ones when it comes to carrying the ball. -

Better value while on the PS? I'm guessing that at $500,000 they will eventually bring him off the PS. I think he's a serviceable RB that if given the opportunity could do about what you typically see out of your every day back up RB. If he had made our team and had been the primary backup I'd been perfectly ok with it, but the fact that he didn't make it and some of our fans went apoplectic over his release and that no team decided to pick him up off of waivers just goes to show you that typically fans views of back up players aren't normally inline with actual NFL evaluators. -

Yep, he's being paid about what a typical third string RB makes. That's about where I'd value him. -

Ragland traded to KC for 4th round 2019 pick
Magox replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's new to the team and he still probably hasn't fully healed his knee. I was a big fan of Ragland out of college and was super stoked about him going into the preseason last year. Awful what happened to his knee, hopefully he'll get back to where he was.
