  1. The play calling on this sequence of downs cost the Bills the game, and that lies with Marrone/Hackett. Lewis is an excellent athlete who can really run for a QB; on second or third down why not fake the handoff to Fred and roll him out to the wide (left) side of the field? This is not second guessing-I was begging them to call the play on second or third down. Thad would probably have walked into the end zone, or at the very least outran any defender to the corner. Peyton Manning can do this but Thad can't? They did roll him out on 4th, but after three straight failed run attempts off right guard, this was easily predictable. They also rolled him out to the short (strong) side of the field, where the D was stacked and ready for him. This is an example of Marrone/Hackett making poor use of the talent that they have to work with.
  2. Although there are some encouraging signs, it is too early for an informed opinion. The sign of a great coach is the ability to get the most out of the talent that he has to work with, having them on the field when they should be there and in the right position, and providing schemes and plays for them to be successful LIke him or not, Belichick is the master at this. We have also not seen enough game day coaching decisions in critical situations to render an informed opinion.
  3. Totally agree on the Easley comments, this guy could be the big, physical receiver the team needs but apparently someone on the coaching staff doesn't think he's worth a shot. He could be another Eric Moulds.
  4. You knew the Bills were going to pay for coming away with no points just after start of 2nd quarter. On 3rd & goal, I was hoping they would fake the run into the line and rolled Lewis out to the wide side (left) of the field, he probably would have walked into the end zone.
  5. I agree with Gugny-almost all of the star receivers in the league today have Easley's size; he needs to be given a chance. Reminds me of Eric Moulds in his first or second year. Let the speed guys share the other receiver position. and get Easley in there.
  6. Although underutilized overall last year by Gailey, when Spiller was in there, Chan, being a true OC (and over his head as a HC) knew HOW to use him. This year's brain trust is willing to put him on the field but does not seem to know how to effectively utilize him; too many inside handoffs hoping he will bounce it outside. Could you imagine what some HC's/OC's would be doing with this duo of Jackson and Spiller? Granted the Bills are leading the league in rushing but they need to get more out of CJ beginning this week.
  7. From a talent and "head" perspective, I think not. Geno does not have as tight a leash on him as EJ did and is making more big throws, but with that comes the mistakes. I do give the Jets credit for allowing him the chance to make plays; that is the only way to grow into the job.
  8. Needs to be given playing time; he has the size (6'2"/220) of today's receiving stars in the league. Could be the big, physical receiver the team needs; they have had none since Eric Moulds.
  9. Like all six of the News beat writers, I was wrong about the Baltimore game. This game is interesting because 1) the Bills usually stink on national TV regardless of the location or opponent, and 2) the Browns are not that bad at 2-2. However, if the Browns win, they will have won 3 games in a span of 12 days, with two coming after they traded their best (although overrated) offensive player. What is the probability of this happening? The Bills are banged up and their game pattern this year has been bad, good, bad, good. Not sure which way to go on this one.
  10. Yes-he had a great camp and has good size.
  11. I smell the first blowout of the season; it could get ugly. Ravens, 38-10.
  12. Agreed-some of these guys have the ability and want to play. Is money going to be a factor like it probably was with Scott? Didn't understand letting a guy like that go-flexibility to play LB and safety, knows the defense, good guy in the locker room. Having him around would make it easy to temporarily switch Williams back to CB.
  13. What does it tell you about the rest of the defense when an unemployed veteran, who has been with the team for a few days, leads in tackles in game 1?
  14. I wonder how much the Bills practiced the QB sneak in camp. You have a QB who is 6'5", 240 lbs, with Wood at center. How many times have you seen the Pats run the sneak on 4th and 1 over the years? If the Bills do not have confidence to run it in enemy territory, they might as well go to the locker room and concede the game. This was a Jauron/Gailey move by Marrone, and I hope we don't see it again.
  15. The same thought began to occur to me after this week. If they do cut him, they would first have to find another vet after cuts, not an easy thing to do. As you said, Kolb has not impressed in camp and really has to pick it up in the last three exhibitions. I see that Jackson was stellar in his first appearance the other night; he is much more mobile than Kolb and his arm is at least as good if not better. Don't know what the Bills were thinking on this one.
  16. The Bills have an easy schedule (26th) and only have to travel out of EST once with no west coast trips, both positives, and personally I hope that they do well. However, the only thing that we have to predict the future is the past, and the facts are that in Nix's tenure the Bills are an abysmal 16-32 overall (.33) and an even worse 4-14 against the AFC East (.22). Like Gailey, Marrone will get a mulligan his first year as the players "learn the new systems." Unlike Gailey, Marrone has never been a head coach in the NFL and will be learning on the job. Also, do not forget that the other AFC east teams, which the record shows are already stronger than the Bills, will be getting stronger themselves.
  17. Remember, this is the same genius who agreed with Gailey that Trent Edwards was a better QB than Fitz. So far, he has failed miserably as GM and will likely ride off into the sunset soon leaving a bigger mess than he inherited.
  18. Ten more games-bad news for the Bills as Brady is 20-2 against them. If he stays healthy and continues that pace he will be 29-3 in five more years.
  19. What about Reich or AVP for QB coach? Two ex-Bills with playing experience, smarts and coaching experience who bring much more to the table than Hackett.
  20. Kelso's Helmet, I totally disagree with you; Bucky is spot on with his piece. Gailey is 13-25 in his tenure with the Bills and does not possess the most important quality of a head coach, the ability to make the best use of the talent on hand. He is now demonstrating this to Bills fans (I am one) on a weekly basis.
  21. This is a good bet; if Nix wants to go with an offensive guy it will be Cameron and if he wants a defensive guy, it will be Rivera, former Chargers defensive coordinator. Look for Buddy to hire a buddy.
  22. of the Bills changing to red helmets, and of their first of two back-to-back 2-14 seasons. Head coach George "Kay" Stephenson decided to change the helmet color from white to red prior to the 1984 season, insisting that the change would aid Buffalo quarterbacks in finding receivers down field when playing division opponents wearing white helmets. Of course, it didn't work, but the Bills continue to wear red helmets to this day. When hired, Stephenson was surprised to get the job, claiming that Bills owner Ralph Wilson "never explained his reasons for selecting me." He is the former Bills coach most like DJ, a decent man always gracious in defeat and focusing on getting problems corrected, but never able to get the job done.
  23. Agree. Sadly for Bills fans, here is the bottom line: 1) the Donahoe era was a total failure; horrible coaching choices and botched drafts. 2) the Levy era was a failure as well; horrible free agent signings (Dockery, Royal, etc.), ridiculous long term deals to pedestrian players (Kelsay, Schobel), a poor head coaching decision, and the totally phony concept of "high character" players. End result? 0-6 against AFC East opponents last year. 3) now we are supposed to believe that a marketing whiz is just so smart that he can suddenly become one of the NFL's top football guys and make decisions that will lead the team to the playoffs. You can dream all you want, but the fact is that this franchise is in disarray. I know, by telling the truth I become "another negative dude."
  24. As I said before, you just gotta love those "high character" guys!
