more stats against drafting a WR at #3: top 5 2010 receiving leaders by yds: 1. Brandon LLoyd: 4th round 2. Roddy White: 1st round - 27th pick 3. REg Wayne: 1st round - 30th pick 4. Greg Jennings: 2nd round 5. Mike Wallace: 3rd round 2009: 1. Andre Johnson: 1st round, 3rd overall (no playoffs) 2. Wes Welker: undrafted 3. Miles Austin: undrafted 4. Sidney Rice: 2nd round 5. Randy Moss: 1st round, 21st 2008: 1. Andre Johnson: 1st round, 3rd overall (no playoffs) 2. Larry Fitzgerald: 1st round, 3rd overall 3. Steve Smith: 3rd round 4. Roddy White: 1st round - 27th pick 5. Calvin Johnson: 1st round - 2nd pick (no playoffs) 2007: 1. Reg Wayne: 27th pick 2. Randy Moss: 21st pick 3. Ochocinco: 2nd round 4. Fitzgerald: 3rd overall 5. Owens: 3rd round 2006: 1. Ochocinco: 3rd round 2. Marvin Harrison: 1st round, 19th 3. Roy Williams: 1st round, 7th (no playoffs) 4. Reg Wayne: 1st round, 30th 5. Donald Driver: 7th round Are these "bogus parameters" too? I'd keep on going, but i'm tired of proving my point. Out of all those players, only 3 have been drafted in the top 5 overall(Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, and Andre Johnson) and only has been on a successful team: Fitzgerald. And don't come back with the "1st round argument"...lets not compare a player drafted in the top 5 of the first round to one drafted at 20+. Feel free to keep on going with the search, b/c I'm done with it. Drafting a WR at #3 is a WASTE. WR is COMPLETELY dependant on the QB and OL to have success, and to make matters worse, you have to pay this completely dependant player premier money..something the bills are ill-equipped to do.
-
bogus parameters? dude, i think a decade is a good sample. how far back do you want me to go? you go back 20yrs then if you have nothing better to do. who honestly cares about your arguments about holmes/fitzgerald/keyshawn, none of your gibberish above disproves anything. My parameters were simple enough, you don't like them, come up with your own. We're not talking about a simple "1st round WR"..we're talking about drafting a WR w/ the top 3 pick, and having to pay WR (of all positions) a top 3 salary. You're completely missing the point.

Solution: Don't draft AJ Green. With the exception of Keyshawn Johnson and Plaxico Burress, no super bowl winning team in the past ten years has had a WR drafted in the top 10, let alone the top 5. As for Keyshawn Johnson and the Super Bowl winning Bucs from the 2002 season, the Bucs didn't draft Keyshawn, he was drafted 1st overall by the Jets in 1996. As for Plaxico Burress and the Super Bowl winning Giants from the 2007 season, the Giants didn't draft Plaxico, he was drafted 8th overall by the Steelers in 2000. Going even further, if you take the time to look at the WR's on these super bowl winning teams, the vast majority of them weren't even drafted in the 1st round-most were drafted early second round (I didn't keep track, but you can go look for yourself). Also, a large portion were also drafted after the 5th rounds. This agains applies to this year's teams in the Super Bowl, so despite the winner, it'll be another season where a champion does not have a top 10 WR. So again, solution = don't draft AJ Green.
-
it was an example, nothin is ever an absolute either way..i realize that. what set the Lions back 10 years ultimately was drafting Harrington in 2002 or 2001..whenever it was, culminated by drating useless WR's.
-
That depends on who's doing the ranking. It's not as if AJ Green is ranked 1 and Fairley/dareus/bowers would be ranked 20-25. I do see a correlation. For a team like the Bills, WR is a luxury pick, much like Spiller was last year, and much like all of those WR's were luxury picks for a team (detroit) who didn't have a defense or o-line (much like the bills of today).

Why the Bills will go QB instead of DT @ pick # 3
bobobonators replied to Bill4Life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't completely disagree with you, but with the exception of the Brady & Manning in your list above (who are beyond simply being "franchise QBs" and enter the realm of legendary players), it can also be said that it's extremely difficult to win a super bowl without a dominating defense. Each and every one of those teams you listed above, again with the exception of Manning/colts and to an extent Brady/Pats, all had an exceptional defense (the saints D was second in the league in 2009 w/39 turnovers, though they did give up yards). To me this franchise QB talk is used too often. Give me a dominating defense, a smart QB who can operate the Offense, and you'll have a shot to win every year. -
i like AJ Green, but on THIS bills team, I'd take Dareus/Quinn/Bowers/Fairley all before AJ. Why? Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, Mike Williams, and Calvin Johnson...and detroit is still nowhere to be seen. Detroit drafts Suh: instantly better. End of story.

Why the Bills will go QB instead of DT @ pick # 3
bobobonators replied to Bill4Life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We pick 3rd, and not one of the QB's in this draft are even close to being top 3 talent. So unless you want to trade down to the 12-15 range to draft Newton, than drafting any of these QBs at 3 would be a waste. Also, it's funny how the likes of Gabbert all of a sudden become popular as the draft approaches..you know why? Because this year's draft class is THAT weak. Gabbert anywhere in the top 15 is a joke History has no bearing on what any of these QB's will do in the future...there's no crystal ball, and there's no fancy equation that'll guarantee any success. -
Why the Bills will go QB instead of DT @ pick # 3
bobobonators replied to Bill4Life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
First and only reason why the Bills will not draft a QB at #3: none of the QB's in this draft are worth a sh#t. -
I know, but you look at our DL and we have 1 legit starter - KW. Stroud will be gone/sucks and spencer johnson isn't exactly tearing it up. I admit it probably won't happen, but it's not that much of a stretch to say that we could draft 2 DL. LDE: Alex Carrington/Paea NT: Kyle Williams/Troup RDE: Marcell Dareus/ spencer johnson SLB: FA / Kelsay (cut maybin) MLB: FA / Draft WLB: resign Paul P JLB: Moats/draft

rome wasn't built in a day; and there is this thing called free agency...
-
I definitely would not be against it. Heck, I'd take Dareus in the first, and Austin in the 2nd. Run defense problem: solved. But, depending on how paea recovers from his knee surgery, i'd rather go with paea in the 2nd.

What should we do for the QB position?
bobobonators replied to The Buffalo Irishman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd gladly take Bulger, Wallace, Grossman, Rosenfels, or Pennington to be our backup...and keep brown at #3. -
Gailey's Quote On Running QB's
bobobonators replied to KOKBILLS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Josh Freeman has no relevance in this discussion. Why not take Locker at 3 then? Maybe he'll come out of nowhere too, since it has already been done. I won't hold my breath for Cam to throw 3,000+ yds and 23td's anytime soon in the nfl. -
Quinn i feel would be the more all-around player right now..not to say that Von Miller couldn't tear it up on a team like the Jets...but Miller would be overpowered playing on the Bills with little help around him. i would go with quinn.
-
Look at my sig-that's how the defense will improve.

Gailey's Quote On Running QB's
bobobonators replied to KOKBILLS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
we already have a running QB in Fitz, which is currently 10x's the player Cam will be for the next 3-4 seasons. -
no way in heck is von miller a 4-3lb in the NFL. 3-4 all the way. Also, endless amounts of NFL-grade HGH. On a related note, did you people notice how jacked Tebow looked in his final games of this season? I wouldn't be surprised if he put on 25-30lbs of muscle. Coaches probably realized that if Tebow is going to survive in the NFL as a running QB, he better be able to take 500+ hits a season.

"Best Player Available"

i agree. my post implied that best player available = projected, by the coaches/organization. -
"Best Player Available"
bobobonators replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
best player available simply means drafting the most talented football player irrespective of your team needs...this makes the most sense when a team has so many needs, that it becomes pointless to try and focus on a specific position and ignoring the others. hence, draft the best player available. the examples you use don't apply to football. if you have a medical condition, of course you go to the specialist that can best remedy your condition...a football team has numerous elements/problems that can't be addressed by a single player, no matter how good they are. So in other words, just focus on the best player available, regardless of position (within reason of course), without limiting your search to the best player within a specific position. -
How can fitzy not be in the top 10!!!

o'hara had a 5oclock shadow...=/ -
Fairley, Dareus, Bowers. One of those three will be available. I'd be fine with any, in that order too. I'll wait until the combine to see more of Quinn as well. The only pick that I would be a little "eh" on would be AJ Green, though I realize he's an amazing talent.

With all due respect, the patriots haven't drafted once in the top 5 in the last decade. The closest they came was in 2001 when they picked 6th overall, and they didn't trade down, they drafted Seymour. It's a lot easier to trade down when youre picking 20th than it is when you're picking 3rd. Also the talent drop off from the top 5 to 20 as compared from 20 to 30, etc. should not be understated. I would stand pat at #3 and just pick the best player we feeel is there.
