If David Martin wasn't injured then I think there's a good chance Pianalto would have been kept as the no. 3. With Martin out we aren't left with enough depth at blocking TE, which is Smith's forte.

Wasn't it implied by Gailey last year that Moats spent so much time at ILB so he could become a more well rounded player? Moving Moats back outside at some point may explain why Coleman was cut in part, even also considering Carrington at OLB.

I'm pretty content with that list for the moment, aside from Roosevelt. I preferred Kamar Aiken to Namaan, but I'd still like to see him stick around. PS players change all the time at this early of a stage, so who knows.

I'd prefer if they'd just retire the numbers outright, but the NFL typically frowns on official number retirements. As it is, the Bills have publicly stated that 34, 78 and 32 are no longer issued "out of respect" for Thurman, Bruce and OJ. By continuing to issue 83 it subtly implies a lack of respect for Andre Reed, regardless of whether or not it's true--- I don't think the Bills organization has any ill will or disrespect for him, fwiw, but it sends that message and Reed has commented on it from time to time.

As PTR and NoSaint mentioned, he accumuated stats against camp fodder. Maybin had 3 sacks in 4 games for the Bills against scrubs during the 2010 preseason and 2 sacks in 2 games during the 2009 preseason (which actually came against starters for Pittsburgh and Detroit). Including the Chicago game this year he has 7.5 sacks in 10 career preseason games. If Dave Wannstedt, as LB coach and assistant HC for the defense, didn't feel he could be a useful contributer or had any potential then I feel just fine that his preseason stats are padded but meaningless. Aaron Maybin went to high school with Rex Ryan's children in Baltimore which I believe has more than a little to do with this reclamation project. Besides, the Jets couldn't make Vernon Gholston into an NFL player, I won't feel bad that we gave up on Mayhem.

With the NFL's willingness to allow WRs to wear numbers in the teens more frequently there's really no reason to continue giving out #83. it is just a number but it has been issued almost continuously since Andre Reed was released (Dave Moore started wearing it in 2002 and right up until Lee Evans was drafted) and it is an unnecessary slap in the face to Reed. At least that's how he's taken it publicly, and it's foolish to upset the team's greatest goodwill ambassadors, especially in such dark times for the franchise where current players are speaking out about being disrespected.

Yeah, he was drafted by the Pats--- looking back, he actually played pretty well for some very bad teams. By the standards of the day, he was considered a bust and his Super Bowl seasons and SB MVP years (atarting at age 33!) with the Raiders were looked upon as a Phoneix-like rebirth, which on it's face, seemed to be what the OP was looking for. I still think Plunkett is a very good example of Bust-to-Star (although his bust status ultimately hinges on the fact that he played for very bad teams in NE and SF). I'm not certain it matters whether he was traded or cut, IMHO.

This is definitely true--- it's possible Trent Edwards may have developed into what Bill Walsh envisioned he would be had he been brought up properly on a better team. The concussions alone may have permanently stunted his growth, something he might not have encountered in, say, Minnesota. There are Browns' coaches from the Tim Couch era that hold to this day that he should have been a great NFL QB, if only he weren't so horribly mismanaged by a franchise in utter disarray. Who knows what might've been.

Possibly also Vinny Testaverde, another Buc draft pick. the bust was in the fact the Steelers cut him. He was drafted in the 9th round (then the 102nd overall), not sure there were a lot of expectations for him to be a stud. Incidentally, the Steelers also released Jack Kemp around that time.

I'm sure it's pretty clear that I'm not making that comparison. Spiller's meager production thus far in the NFL grossly outweighing Maybin's is not really a debate unless you're blind or ignorant. I'm sure you're accustomed to people on the Internet thinking you're stupid so try not to let it bother you.

Back what up? Maybin has produced literally nothing, which I said in the original post. I also said Spiller hasn't produced much... but with a few highlight reel type positive plays Spiller by comparison has shown much more. In other words, you're both blind and willfully ignorant, which everyone here already knows.

When someone says "1,000 times more" they're using hyperbole for "a lot". If you can't see that Spiller has shown much more than Maybin then you're either blind or being willfully ignorant.

Spiller hasn't produced much in the NFL, but he's still already produced 1,000 times as much as Maybin and you know it.
