Anchor Bar Question

We went to Boston for a school field trip when I was in the 8th grade and stopped at a restaurant to eat dinner. They had Buffalo Wings at the buffet and they were served breaded with marinara sauce...i was like WTF is this???

 

WTF? with marinara sauce? That's a new one to me. I hate it when some places offer a choice between naked or breaded wings. The first time I saw that I was like WTF???

I just looked it up. The franchisor of Just Pizza is Rudy Alloy and Danny Domino owns several locations in the Buffalo area. Just Pizza also has a location in Sarasota Florida and is planning to open one up in Las Vegas as well. I'm surprised that Buffalo Pizza in Deltona went out of business considering they probably had better food than all of its competitors. It seems the people in Deltona have no clue about good food. Why did it go out of business?

 

The owner (Mr. Domino) ended up getting cancer. I believe his brother was Danny, but I could be wrong.

 

They stayed pretty busy, also got a very good "Buffalo" crowd during Bills games and some Sabres games. I became friends with his daughter for a while, but fell out of touch after they closed. I never did hear if he beat it and/or how he was doing.

This was awhile ago but remember the one poster stated he had a top recipe for chicken wings that involved MICROWAVING the wings. Said it was the best wings he ever had. We really do get some ignorant f*cks on this board.

Also, there's a Santora's in Daytona Beach that has the same menu as the Santora's in Tonawanda, minus the "Phase ll" part. Food's pretty good, tastes almost the same.

 

 

No s#it? That's great. I always thought Santora's was decent. Not outstanding for Buffalo, but pretty good. It would be like heaven, here. I will have to take a ride down there, one of these days.

Some people like teriyaki wings, and some like them breaded, and some like to dip it in ranch sauce. All a matter of personal preference, but I still reserve the right to say heretic <_<

i don't like teriyaki and i don't like breaded, and i solely use blue cheese. my wife prefers them dry (last time we were at pearl street, and that was a while ago, they served them dry), but i like a nice coating (not dripping mind you) of sauce. duff's has generally fit the bill. and their bowl of shoestring fries are a great complement.

Microwaving FROZEN wings no less. Ah yes, I remember that one well. Twas the illustrious molson_golden. His ability to make wings was only matched by his ability to interpret politics.

funny thing is that boneless wings, though interesting in concept, simply don't cut it.

There is a chain called Hurricane Grill & Wings that makes some acceptable wings (at least the one in St Augustine does) and also makes "boneless wings", which are not wings, of course. They are breaded breast pieces, coated with sauce.

 

In my experience, if you don't think of these tid-bits as "wings" but rather more like chicken tenders (or bite sized chicken fingers), they can be a nice treat, for those times you don't feel like getting all wing sloppy. I usually avoid traditional Buffalo-style sauce, to avoid any wing thoughts (the Volcanic Lava Glaze isn't bad).

 

The things you will eat (and actually enjoy) when you are deprived of the "real thing". It's shameful, actually.

 

But Hurricane Grill & Wings isn't horrible (that's a big endorsement from me). They keep their beer glasses/mugs white wine glasses very cold. In fact, their 32oz beer mug is frozen solid, and actually seems to keep the beer cold the entire time (unless you really nurse it).

right, i should've made the distinction and put "boneless wings" in quotations, since all they are formed meat nuggets, which doesn't sound entirely appetizing. still not the same though as actual wings.

they do come in handy when i'm playing the ntn trivia game at a local watering hole -- the one-handed approach allows me keep a hand free to answer questions, but that's about it.

 

as for your note about really nursing beer ... well, anyone who does that is a heretic, shouldn't be allowed in a bar, or, perhaps stick to lemonade for that matter. :ph34r:

Not everyone likes Duffs. Their wings tend to be relatively dry/crispy. If you like your wings like that, then you'll probably like Duffs. If you like your wings more saucy, you might not like Duffs.

 

Lots of places in WNY have good/great wings. I haven't been to Hemmingways downtown in many years, but every time I had wings there they were big and great.

 

 

crispy is the only way to get them

 

outside of Buffalo i tell the fry cook ' when you think they are done leave them in for another minute'

 

nothing worse than a raw wing

Duff's is awesome. And Gabriels Gate runs a close second IMO

 

I live around the block from the Gate and can say that it is certainly one of the best bars in Buffalo to get wings at. I do like the Anchor Bar for wings and they do have decent pizza. I don't drive, so I don't get out to the burbs too often for Duff's.

I have to say the best wings I have had in the area were at The Buffalo Brew Pub. They have the largest , crispiest , & tastiest wings I have had. The beer's not bad either...

Maybe the two Duffs locations are different but whenever I go to the Duffs in OP, whether it's medium or medium-hot they are drenched with sauce, nothing dry at all about them. Also Duff's has better all around food than Anchor bar, which is a huge disappointment for any Buffalonian.

 

Also try Buffalo Sports Garden in West Seneca and the Big Tree Inn right next to the stadium with the berman statue.

They're located directly across the street from the Daytona Beach Convention Center (not sure what it's really called). They have a cross walk that goes over A1A from the parking garage. When you get off of the cross walk, you exit into this 3 or 4 story shopping plaza on the strip. Santora's is one of the restaraunts in there. I got a Sausage Sub and my wife ordered their Chicken Parm. Sub. Both were great, tasted just like the Santora's back home. Also tried a slice, and while Santora's wasn't my favorite pizza place, it tasted exactly the same (too much sauce if you ask me). Either way, it's cool to have a local place from back home (I lived right down the street from Santora's growing up).
