SD Jarhead
Bob Seger!! looks like everybody has forgotten him but he made some great ones... "The Ring" for example. Bob Seger is one of those guys who could've been raised in WNY as his song lyrics fit the area to a tee. I've alway's enjoyed his music. Ditto to Da Big Man; music takes me back to times long gone. I had a GOOD TIME growing up in W. Seneca and Hamburg back in the day. There's so many great songs out there that this thread could crash the board if we posted them all. What I find funny as I age is much of the music I wouldn't get caught dead listening to as a kid now sounds good to me. I was that kid who proudly wore the "Disco Sucks" shirt at every opportunity, but some of that old stuff actually sounds good today.

The Senator
OK - back to song lyrics... More from one of my all time favourites, Frank Zappa... (This is a song about vegetables . . .) Call any vegetable Call it by name Call one today When you get off the train Call any vegetable And the chances are good Ooooh! The vegetable Will respond to you Call any vegetable Pick up your phone Think of a vegetable Lonely at home Call any vegetable And the chances are good That a vegetable will respond to you-hoooo RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAY-AY-AYGA RUTA-BAYYYYY . . . (A prune isn't really a vegetable. Cabbage is a vegetable.) No one will know If you don't want to let 'em know No one will know 'Less it's you that might tell 'em so Call and they'll come to you Covered with dew Vegetables dream Of responding to you Standing there Shiny & proud by your side Holding your hand While the neighbors decide Why is a vegetable Something to hide? I was that kid who proudly wore the "Disco Sucks" shirt at every opportunity, but some of that old stuff actually sounds good today. I can relate to that. I'll turn 38 this month. When I was younger, it was all Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallica, The Who, Ramones, and such. As I've gotten older, I appreciate artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Elton John, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, and Jim Croce. I'll end the list there to avoid possible revocation of my man card. Here are a couple more well written songs... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There's a port, on a western bay And it serves a hundred ships a day Lonely sailors, pass the time away And talk about their homes And there's a girl in this harbor town And she works layin' whiskey down They say "Brandy, fetch another round" She serves them whiskey and wine The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea" Brandy wears a braided chain Made of finest silver from the North of Spain A locket that bears the name Of the man that Brandy loves He came on a summer's day Bringin' gifts from far away But he made it clear he couldn't stay No harbor was his home The sailor said " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea" Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes When he told his sailor stories She could feel the ocean foam rise She saw its ragin' glory But he had always told the truth, lord, he was an honest man And Brandy does her best to understand At night when the bars close down Brandy walks through a silent town And loves a man who's not around She still can hear him say She hears him say " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea" She hears him say " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea" Brandy by Looking Glass Am I a long way from your heart, I wonder, Is this where love ends, heartache starts, I wonder, I wonder if you ever think about me, And how good our old loving used to be, Sometimes, Sometimes I wonder When you left with one last curious look, I wonder, I tried to call you, you changed the number on me, I really wonder You tell me things to get me where you want me to be, How come I feel your getting the best of me, sometimes, I wonder I hear a car coming round the corner, I hear footsteps on my front porch, I see a shadow from the light above, I hear a voice, Oh it's not yours Why does this happen, What's going on, I wonder, Could this be a dream, or has Bob gone crazy, I wonder, How come I feel your taking advantage of me, Why can't I get you out of me, Sometimes, Sometimes I wonder (guitar solo) They say that time will heal my broken heart, I wonder, Could it be that I'm blind, All alone in the dark, I wonder I can't help feeling this way, If I could leave, I'd surely leave today, Sometimes I wonder It seems to me you still wanna be around But when I see you, all hell starts breaking down, Sometimes I wonder, mm hmm I really wonder. And as i'm a country boy i can even relate more with Mellencamp. My favorite has always be: U2 - All I Want Is You You say you want Diamonds on a ring of gold You say you want Your story to remain untold But all the promises we make From the cradle to the grave When all I want is you You say you'll give me A highway with no one on it Treasure just to look upon it All the riches in the night You say you'll give me Eyes in a moon of blindness A river in a time of dryness A harbour in the tempest But all the promises we make From the cradle to the grave When all I want is you You say you want Your love to work out right To last with me through the night You say you want Diamonds on a ring of gold Your story to remain untold Your love not to grow cold All the promises we break From the cradle to the grave When all I want is you
ExiledInIllinois
I always knew that you would take yourself far from home as soon as, as far as you could go. By the 1/4 inch cut of your hair and the Army issue green, for the past eight weeks I can tell where you've been. For I knew, I could see, it was all cut and dried to me there was soldier's blue blood streaming inside your veins. There is a world outside of this room and when you meet it promise me you won't meet it with your gun. So now you are one of the brave few, it's awful sad we need boys like you. I hope the day never comes for "Here's your live round son. Stock and barrel, safety, trigger, here's your gun." Well I knew, I could see, it was all cut and dried to me there was soldiers blue blood streaming inside your veins. There is a world outside of this room and when you meet it promise me you won't meet it with your gun taking aim. For I don't mean to argue, they've made a decent boy of you and I don't mean to spoil your home coming, but baby brother you should expect me to. "Stock and barrel, safety, trigger, here's your gun." So now does your heart pitter pat with a patriotic song when you see the stripes of Old Glory waving? Well I knew, I could see, it was all cut and dried to me there was soldier's blue blood streaming inside your veins. There is a world outside of this room and when you meet it promise me you won't meet it with your gun taking aim. I don't mean to argue, they've made a decent boy of you and I don't mean to spoil your homecoming my baby brother Jude and I don't mean to hurt you by saying this again, they're so good at making soldiers but they're not so good at making men. ~Gun Shy, 10,000 Maniacs

TheMadCap
On our 25th anniversary, I got the wife a family tree, with photo frames to hang from the branches. At the top was a small heart. On one side it was engraved simply "25" On the other side it was engraved "If the sun refused to shine..." If I have to 'splain it, you are young or I am old. Heh Nice Tom! Here's a favorite of mine: You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking. And after a while, you can work on points for style Like the club tie, and the firm handshake A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to So that when they turn their backs on you You'll get the chance to put the knife in. You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older And in the end you'll pack up, fly down south Hide your head in the sand Just another sad old man All alone and dying of cancer. And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone Dragged down by the stone. I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze? Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner And everythings done under the sun And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer. Who was born in a house full of pain Who was trained not to spit in the fan Who was told what to do by the man Who was broken by trained personnel Who was fitted with collar and chain Who was given a pat on the back Who was breaking away from the pack Who was only a stranger at home Who was ground down in the end Who was found dead on the phone Who was dragged down by the stone. Chilly
Over the Hills and Far Away By Nightwish They came for him one winter's night. Arrested, he was bound. They said there'd been a robbery, his pistol had been found. They marched to the station house, he waited for the dawn. And as they led him to the dock, he knew that he'd been wrong. "You stand accused of robbery," he heard the bailiff say. He knew without an alibi, tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom. Over the hills and far away, for ten long years he'll count the days. Over the mountains and the seas, a prisoner's life for him there'll be. He knew that it would cost him dear, but yet he dare not say. Where he had been that fateful night, a secret it must stay. He had to fight back tears of rage. His heart beats like a drum. For with the wife of his best friend, he spent his final night of freedom. Over the hills and far away, he swears he will return one day. Far from the mountains and the seas, back in her arms he swears he'll be. Over the hills and far away. Over the hills and, over the hills and, over the hills and far away. Each night within his prison cell, he looks out through the bars. He reads the letters that she wrote. One day he'll know the taste of freedom. Over the hills and far away, she prays he will return one day. As sure as the rivers reach the seas, back in his arms she swears she'll be. Over the hills and far away, he swears he will return one day. Far from the mountains and the seas, back in her arms he swears he'll be. Over the hills and far away, she prays he will return one day. As sure as the rivers reach the seas, back in his arms is where she'll be. Over the hills, over the hills and far away. Over the hills, over the hills and far away. BLZFAN4LIFE
Well the first days are the hardest days, Don't you worry any more, 'Cause when life looks like easy Street, there is danger at your door. Grateful Dead -- Uncle John's Band. I'm going to rent myself a house In the shade of the freeway I'm going to pack my lunch in the morning And go to work each day And when the evening rolls around I'll go on home and lay my body down And when the morning light comes streaming in I'll get up and do it again Amen Say it again Amen I want to know what became of the changes We waited for love to bring Were they only the fitful dreams Of some greater awakening I've been aware of the time going by They say in the end it's the wink of an eye And when the morning light comes streaming in You'll get up and do it again Amen Caught between the longing for love And the struggle for the legal tender Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring And the junk man pounds his fender Where the veterans dream of the fight Fast asleep at the traffic light And the children solemnly wait For the ice cream vendor Out into the cool of the evening Strolls the pretender He knows that all his hopes and dreams Begin and end there Ah the laughter of the lovers As they run through the night Leaving nothing for the others But to choose off and fight And tear at the world with all their might While the ships bearing their dreams Sail out of sight I'm going to find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means And we'll fill in the missing colors In each other's paint-by-number dreams And then we'll put out dark glasses on And we'll make love until our strength is gone And when the morning light comes streaming in We'll get up and do it again Get it up again I'm going to be a happy idiot And struggle for the legal tender Where the ads take aim and lay their claim To the heart and the soul of the spender And believe in whatever may lie In those things that money can buy Thought true love could have been a contender Are you there? Say a prayer for the pretender Who started out so young and strong Only to surrender Jackson Browne -- The Pretender. You can spend all your time making money You can spend all your love making time The Eagles -- Take It To The Limit I met my old lover On the street last night She seemed so glad to see me I just smiled And we talked about some old times And we drank ourselves some beers Still crazy afler all these years Oh, still crazy after all these years Im not the kind of man Who tends to socialize I seem to lean on Old familiar ways And I aint no fool for love songs That whisper in my ears Still crazy afler all these years Oh, still crazy after all these years Four in the morning Crapped out, yawning Longing my life a--way Ill never worry Why should i? Its all gonna fade Now I sit by my window And I watch the cars I fear Ill do some damage One fine day But I would not be convicted By a jury of my peers Still crazy after all these years Oh, still crazy Still crazy Still crazy after all these years Paul Simon -- Still Crazy After All These Years. eSJayDee
Last Mango in Paris - Jimmy Buffett I went down to Captain Tony's to get out of the heat When I heard a voice call out to me, 'Son, come have a seat' I had to search my memory as I looked into those eyes Our lives change like the weather but a legend never dies He said, 'I ate the last mango in Paris Took the last plane out of Saigon Took the first fast boat to China And Jimmy, there's still so much to be done' I had a third world girl in Buzios With a pistol on each hand She always kept me covered As we moved from land to land I had a damn good run on wall street With my high fashion model wife Til I woke up dry beneath the African sky Just me and my Swiss Army knife I ate the last mango in Paris Took the last plane out of Saigon Took the first fast boat to China And Jimmy there's still so much to be done We shot the breeze for hours As the sun fell from the skies And like the sun he disappeared before my very eyes It was somewhere past dark-thirty When I went back to the head I read upon the dingy wall The words the old man said He said, 'I ate the last mango in Paris Took the last plane out of Saigon Took the first fast boat to China And Jimmy, there's still so much to be done' I ate the last mango in Paris Took the last plane out of Saigon Took the first fast boat to China And Jimmy there's still so much to be done

bbb
The best lyrical song of all time: PETE TOWNSHEND - Slit Skirts I was just thirty-four years old and I was still wandering in a haze I was wondering why everyone I met seemed like they were Lost in a maze I don't know why I thought I should have some kind of Divine right to the blues It's sympathy not tears people need when they're the Front page sad news. The incense burned away and the stench began to rise And lovers now estranged avoided catching each others' eyes And girls who lost their children cursed the men who fit the coil And men not fit for marriage took their refuge in the oil No one respects the flame quite like the fool who's badly burned From all this you'd imagine that there must be something learned Slit skirts, Jeanie never wears those slit skirts I don't ever wear no ripped shirts Can't pretend that growing older never hurts. Knee pants, Jeanie never wears no knee pants Have to be so drunk to try a new dance So afraid of every new romance Slit skirts, slit skirt Jeanie isn't wearing those slit skirts, slit skirt She wouldn't dare in those slit skirts, slit skirt Wouldn't be seen dead in no slit skirt Slit skirts, slit skirt Jeanie isn't wearing those slit skirts, slit skirt She wouldn't dare in those slit skirts, slit skirt Wouldn't be seen dead in no slit skirt Romance, romance, why aren't we thinking up romance? Why can't we drink it up true heart romance Just need a brief new romance Let me tell you some more about myself, you know I'm sitting at home just now. The big events of the day are passed and the late TV shows have come around. I'm number one in the home team, but I still feel unfulfilled. A silent voice in her broken heart complaining that I'm unskilled. And I know that when she thinks of me, she thinks of me as him, But, unlike me, she don't work off her frustration in the gym. Recriminations fester and the past can never change A woman's expectations run from both ends of the range Once she woke with untamed lovers' face between her legs Now he's cooled and stifled and it's she who has to beg Slit skirts, Jeanie never wears those slit skirts And I don't ever wear no ripped shirts Can't pretend that growing older never hurts Knee pants, Jeanie never wears no knee pants We have to be so drunk to try a new dance So afraid of every new romance Slit skirts, slit skirt Jeanie isn't wearing those slit skirts, slit skirt She wouldn't dare in those slit skirts, slit skirt Wouldn't be seen dead in no slit skirt Slit skirts, slit skirt Jeanie isn't wearing those slit skirts, slit skirt She wouldn't dare in those slit skirts, slit skirt Wouldn't be seen dead in no slit skirt Romance, romance, why aren't we thinking up romance?
