Sexual Offender Registry

I wish there was a way to tell the difference between:

1. The horrific sex offenders who have molested little children, and

2. The 18 year old boy who has consensual sex with his 16 year old girlfriend, gets caught by her parents and arrested.

Sadly, they both end up on the same list.

From what I gathered looking at the map for my neighborhood, a green dot is your #2, and a red is your #1. Yellow is inbetween.

And then there's the occasional "sex offender" who grabs a 12-year old girl by the arm to scold her for running out in traffic, and gets on the list because the law states that "illegal restraint of a minor" is a sexual offense no matter what. 0:)

What is third degree rape? That is the nice yellow dot I found within a half mile.

i hate the term "pedophile"...."predetor".....these scum that commit these crimes on children are rapists. there is no need to give it a cute name.

we have one of these losers that lives on our street. that actually dropped off the registry.

not sure how that works.

I don't think it's a "cute" name at all. I also think it's important to distinguish those who prey on children. As horrible as all rapists are, I like to believe there is a special place in the hottest corner of hell for those who would do such harm to a child. It warms my heart to know that such people are targeted in prisons.

So i took a look at Tallahassee, and was wondering...is it bad if you click on a square and it says, "multiple offenders found at this address" Guess i know where to avoid trick or treating...

Could be a jail or similar; I saw that in one of the neighborhoods I searched, and the dot appeared to be near the jail.

Yes, it did. I don't remember where, but it was in the last year or two.

The judge said something like, "I know this isn't the spirit of the law, but it's the letter so I have no choice," which is complete BS.

It was in Illinois somewhere.

Just one of the examples of the problems of these "sexual predators" lists. Not infrequently they're a knee-jerk reaction to a significantly over-hyped problem that haven't been given enough thought into their relation to other laws. Not unlike the PATRIOT Act in relation to the legality of using agencies of national security for warrantless wire-taps. Knee-jerk laws are a bad idea, no matter how well-intended they are.

And that's beside the constitutional issues with sexual predators lists. Every criminal attorney I know (more than a few) expect these lists to be overturned on constitutional issues if it ever gets to the Supreme Court. There's not insignificant constitutional issues with punishment continuing after your judicially-decided sentence is served...

Nope, actually its in the middle of probably the single worst neighborhood in tallahassee. At first i thought maybe it was a couple that committed these crimes, like a myspace, i mean child porn, ring, but it was 2 males with different names.
